With a mixed rocker/camber design and variable sidecut, the 2009 Armada JJ Alpine Ski breaks the mold of traditional ski shapes and represents a revolutionary tool for new-school riding in variable snow conditions. The JJ is a ski within a ski: 50% rockered powder fatty, 50% all-mountain carver, and 100% unique. Rockered tips and tails and a fatty profile (115mm at its narrowest) encourage surfy, new-school slash turns and switch riding in the pow, while Armada’s Elf Shoe Tech brings significant sidecut and camber underfoot to help you carve the crap out of firmer snow. The ski’s rockered design elements also allow the you to rip up wind-affected snow and cut-up pow like never before. The JJ’s Ultra Light Core and AR 50 construction reduce the already low swing weight provided by the skis’ early rise tips and tails.
Bottom Line: A true all-mountain, rockered pow ski, the JJ changes the game.
A bit wide, but I've seen people ski the park on them. They are actually pretty close to symmetrical, so I'd imagine they wouldn't be half bad. A lot of people rep fat skis in the park nowadays, you could give it a try.
I'd like some opinions. These skis look sweet. I got turned on to Armada last year and love my ARVs. Now I'm looking for something for the backcountry, something fat. Considering the ARGs, but these look great too. Any thoughts? Mostly ski the Sierra, fyi. Thanks in advance!
These are super sick pow skis, but more versatile than the ARGs. If all it is that you are skiing with this pair is deep deep pow, go for the ARGs, but if you need to make some groomer turns to get to the chair, this ski is highly, highly recommended.
I bought these skis with the optimistic idea of a one quiver ski and they more than filled that idea. These skis alone, can do everything a mountain can offer. That is a true statement. There pretty stiff you can conquer the hard pack and groomers with ease. Straight up amazing of how well they handle on the hard pack and crud. The only thing the 115 underfoot does is make pow skiing easier. The rocker does not effect the ski on the piste because of the elf shoe design. But the same things that make it easy on the groomers makes it immaculate in the powder. These have amazing float in the powder. My understanding for powder has been redefined because of the JJ's. Crazy nimbleness in the trees and mind blowing results all over. Its hard to fully describe my feelings for this ski. I found my true love(s).
hi Im 180 and I use to ride short skis between 170-175 i was wondering if I should get the 185's or they would be too long for me for doing short turns. other question I had was, what bindings would you recomend me?
You won't find 185's anywhere they have been soldout for months and you might have a hard time finding the 175's also. That said ,go for the 175's if your used to short skis.
The 185's sold out everywhere for the year very early, you could get away with the 174, but i would hold out for 2010's and get 185's. Or get 174's and sell them at the end of the season and get next years 185.
Just got these crazy looking beotches and had some high hopes for a rockered pow ski that can hang at the variable condition you find at resorts. First day out was really variable wind funk, generally pretty hard. I wasn't sure about them then. Second day it got better, as I figured them out. I am 5'9", 165lbs former racer. So the more center mount (I went -5 from dead center) was a new feel for me. By the third day with blower pow I'm loving it. Surfy, slarvy, and floaty in the pow, carvy on the groom. They love to ski switch, better than my gotamas by far as the rockered tail never hooks up. light, and stiff enough to haul ass. No flappy tips either. Hard large bumps are tough though, as the tips wanted to cross up. Awesome ski!
JJs !!! Super reverse camber skis like the ARG are awesome in deep, soft snow but the JJ is tremendously versatile. You'll still get top notch pow performance with a JJ but you'll also have a ski that is super nimble in trees and even carves well and handles parks. I've skied Jay a bunch and the JJ would be perfect!
I am looking for an All-mtn pow ski... I feel the 175's are too short.. Is there any ski that compares to these with regards to powder performance as well as groomed stuff??
i'm actually about 175. I'd say i'm a pretty good skier. I ski a lot of trees and like the ability to get the skis around quick. I just moved to CO so this season has been a real improvement year for me. I'm close to 20 days for the season and I've already experienced great improvement. additionally, it also seems like the 185's are hard to come by..i might have to wait for the off season for those...
fischer...how tall are you and do you think the 185's are a good size. I'm shy of 6'1 and this season i chose to ride a shorter ski as i felt like i have more control. I'm actually riding 169 twin tips...i dont feel like i've lost that much speed as i was always able to haul. I plan on sking the JJ's in the pow and doing some drops and trees etc thus i felt like maybe the 175's would be a good size. thoughts?
What's your weight and skiing ability? That's the biggest factor in ski length. It's hard to gauge since you're riding on 169's right now which must mean you're 150ish pounds or less based on sizing. If you're closer to 200 lbs. and feel like you're an advanced skiier then you could easily go with the 185cm. This ski with the slight rocker skis a little bit shorter than the actual length.
Hi, I am an aggressive skier and I'm 5ft 9" (170cm) and 160Lb and i ski on a pair of Scratch Brigade's 178cm. I was wondering what size JJ's i should get, 175 or 185?...is it better to go longer with a rocker ski? Also would you recomend mounting a pair of Marker Jesters or is there another binding better suited to the JJ?
If you are already skiing the brigades in a 178, it couldnt hurt to step up to the 185. With the rocker these will ski a little shorter than their length might suggest and a 175 will probably feel too short for you if you're already on 178s.As for bindings, the Jesters are a great option for a ski this wide.
These skis are simply amazing, the best big mountain ski I've ever skied!! They make even the deepest powder effortless to ski and break up the crud better than anything else out there. Even when you cannot get fresh tracks, these skis handle groomers and the bumps surprisingly well.
I was wondering what to get the JJ's or the ARG's? I ride an ARV 185 as my everyday ski but looking to add to my selection when it's over a foot, is that enough to ride a reverse camber?
You could ride a reverse camber in 4" and it would feel great, if you already have a all-mountain ski in the ARV then i would ARG for a powder spef. ski. It's awesome.
Has anyone weighing in the 150-170 pound range skied the 175's? If so, what did you think? I am 6' 1" and 160, aggressive, skiing 178cm Fischer Watea 94's and love those. I want to try to JJ's but since there are only 175's available, I am wondering if these will be workable.
I weight 155 and im 5'9" and this ski is, i think, a perfect size for me. But you could probably make it work. Its an awesome ski is easy to get use to.
I would say they are very close to the same flex not much difference between them.If anything they might be a tad softer. But the early rise makes the ski naturally want to bend a little more
I got these through bc.com at an awesome price through the gear experts thanks allot guys. I Mounted em -2 back from dead center or +3 from the midsole line and they are awesome. I wouldn't suggest going any more forward due too the minimal sidecut. Hardpack: Due too the rocker and reverse sidecut these ski like a 120ish cm ski on the groomers but they can definitely hold an edge when you turn em over. Ice isn't terrible Powder: awesome as I had expected. little tip dive and absolutely rip going switch. not hooky at all, make nice slarvey turns.
Hello,Looking for some info on how these skis might perform in the backcountry. How does the rockered design work with skinning? I've heard that a rockered ski does not skin well because there isn't enough base-area pressing the skins into the snow to make the skins grip. Also- what is the weight of these skis? Are they a stiff, mid, or soft ski? Thanks!
This is a medium/soft flex ski.Your thoughts on the skiing are along the right lines but you shouldn't really have too much of a problem except on the really steep skin tracks or hard snow.
I have a pair of 183 Katanas, and seeing as though there are only 175's of the JJ's left.... anybody think the 175 will still work for me? I'm an aggressive skier 5'9", 175 lb. I've already broken one pair of Katanas and completely shattered a pair of Gotamas within 1 year.
A longer ski is not going to withstand the beating you put it through any better. It is more a question of what you want to ski to do for you on the mountain. At your size, I would say the 175 would work but would not be ideal, especially if you're used to skiing a longer ski.
hey i was wondering how these would work for me. I am 135lbs 6' and 16. right now i have 165 armada ARVs. These short skiis are good because i ski in a very jumping, hopturn type style. i usually have problems controlling longer, heavier skiis.
I just got a pair and skied them for the first time the other day at Alta in 12 inches of fresh. I have a pair of K2 pontoons, so I am used to a reverse camber ski. I will say with out a doubt that these are the BEST ski I have ever been on. Floats so well in pow and crud. It is stiffer, lighter and more lively than any other ski I have skied. The narrow tip does not get loaded up in deep snow. This ski is great and everyone should get a pair!!!
Hey i was just wondering if i should buy this or the ARGs I am a smaller and lighter skier looking for a good powder specific as i already have the ar6s Which one would be better??
If your looking for ski for JUST powder go ARG, but they do not ski anywhere else very good. I would go JJ's you could ski your AR6's (excellent skis) in the park and your JJ's else where and still float like crazy in the deep pow, Yes they are that good.ARG's are incredible in super deep tight trees, but like willie says, they're not so versatile. if you are only getting one more ski, get the JJ. if you are building a quiver and want the ULTIMATE all-pow all the time, go with ARG
This, the K2 Hellbent or the Rossignol Calbello? So far I prefer this, but is there someone out there who has used all of them? If so, what do you think?
I have not skied the rossie, but on the other two,the hellbent is very much a powder ski, soft tip@ tail but stiff under foot, they are manigible on groomers but you have to keep them on edge not running flat. The new JJ's are the future of ski,s. I thought they were kind of on the stiff side, but rip everything and float well in powder, this ski can do anything. the rossie--- why bother just buy the armada and save 120 bucks over another overpriced-- overrated rossi ski, rossiignal has been a follower not a leader in the freeride/freestyle scene for years, Just an old race company trying to survive in the modern freeride era.
I have only gotten to ski this ski once so far. All I can say is "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking some up." Seriously, they are probably the best 1 ski quiver ski that I have ever handled (for Snowbird/Alta that is). They carve fine on groomers, better than the ARG. They float and surf awesome in deep pow, and they are stiff enough to handle crud without a problem. I don't know if it gets any better than this.
I skinned a pair of ARG's (which are completely rockered) all last year and had no problems losing traction. Make sure you have wall to wall coverage as always. You don't really need AT boots unless you're doing day trips in the backcountry. For slackcountry and just access hikes from the lifts you're fine with downhillboots.
I heard on other websites that the JJ in 185 is sold out all across the nation and that armada may take til the end of the year to get more production out, a testimony to how good people think this ski is.It's true. Armada is completely out of these.Just talked to Armada, no more 185 JJ's until Fall 09
wondering if 175s would work for a 120lbs, 5'6", 15 year old.-has been racing for 5 years, skiing for 12-loves the trees and charging bowls-jumps the occasional cliff-looks for pow all day
you might want to go longer- as rockered skis tend to feel shorter- basically- with a medium rockered ski like the jj, ad 5 cm to your regular ski height
the look and the rossi are essentially the same binding. Jester would probably be lighter and has a wider profile to get these fatties up on edge. Those are all good choices. Can't really go wrong. Make sure you get phatty brakes!
