Even icicles wish they could wear this hat.

SoI just bought this one, and I was freaking out because I have no clue what the small zipper does on the back side. What does the zipper do?
From OR's product page for this hat:
-Hidden zippered pocket on ear band
Great hat, but could be a bit longer.
- Gender: Male
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This is my primary winter hat. It is windproof and the fabric is very soft and comfortable. It also does a good job of wicking moisture away from my head.
The downside is that it could be a little longer. It doesn't quite cover the tips of my ears, which can be a problem when it is really cold. Other than that, I haven't found a better hat.

Perfect Winter Hat
I live up in North Dakota where it is flat, windy and cold in the winters. I normally wear a 7 3/8's or L/XL in stretchfit and this hat in a large fits me perfect. Super warm and does an outstanding job of protecting my melon from the winter conditions. I would definitely recommend this to anyone in frigid, blistery conditions.
Not enough coverage
Nice fleece, true to size, but it only covers the tops of my ears. I'd think that if it's nasty enough to want Windstopper on your head you'd want your ears covered, too.
Light, windproof, not full ear coverage
I wanted to like this in a five star way. The fleece feels awesome with no itchies. Great lightweight item for the pack. I wish you could pull it down further because even though it fits well, it leaves too much exposed and half my ears stays cold when it's really windy out.
A little small for my head, it might be that I need a bigger hat or a smaller head. I like it when Im outside, but don't like it when Im in public because of how small it is. It is very worm though.
OR WinterTrek fleece hat
I got this hat for my husband for Christmas & it was a hit! He loved it & it saved me from buying a lot of unwanted gifts. Well worth the money.
OR WinterTrek Fleece Hat.
It is perfect, warm and it fits very well.
I am very satisfied. There's no problems with it whatsoever, even at -28 Centigrades (-50F).
I am very pleased with it. Only thing is that it kinda looks "dusty" with that specific blue colour. I had another OR hat years ago that was very bright blue; I would prefer that colour, but it is a minor detail.
A+ from here for functionality, form, fit and the quality.
Shrinks to a child's size
I ordered this hat after reading all the great reviews. I wanted a windproof hat because I hate cold ears. I bought one for myself and one for my adult son. After washing it and drying it in a low heat dryer, it was so small (and it was size large to begin with) that it was too small for either of us to wear. I didn't see any care instructions indicating that it could not be machine dried. I am keeping the second hat as I want to like it, but certainly will only hand wash and drip dry it. Hope that one doesn't shrink also. Luckily, Backcountry has a great return policy which is why I shop here. It's probably a great hat, but DO NOT put it in the dryer, even on a low setting. I am taking off 2 stars for poor fabric care instructions (actually none).
OR Winter Trek Hat
The absolute best hat I've ever used.
This is a nice cap. Took a trip to REI this weekend and looked their selection of more than 50 caps. This one
was one of the best. If/when I lose it, I'll replace it for sure.
Won't make you uncomfortable even while sweating, is really lightweight and makes you wonder whether it will work in really cold weather (I haven't tested yet), but fits very nicely don't order too small or it won't fit for sure.
Would this hat fit well under a bike helmet?...
Would this hat fit well under a bike helmet? I can't tell how bulky/thick it is compared to, for instance, 200 weight polar fleece. Please advise.
As long as your helmet isn't super snug you should be fine. This is a pretty low profile hat.
It should. It Fits quite perfect under a Roc/Ice Helmet.
Great hat but doesn't stretch too much
This hat is warm and excellent against the wind. Its soft on the inside and very lightweight. It stretches just enough to get on and stay firmly in place. However, it doesn't have much 'extra' stretch, so if the fit is slightly small, it won't stretch to cover up your (ahem) sizing error when you ordered it. That being said, if you order the right size, it is great for keeping the icy winds off your head. Note that it stays quite warm even when your sweating into it.
Windstopper material is great!!
Like mentioned above, I was also surprised at how light weight this hat is, while it is light it is warm and blocks the wind very well. The fit is pretty true to size.
I was surprised when I recently got this hat from Backcountry how light weighted it was. I have used it a couple of days now in wintery conditions in the mountains in Norway and I certainly can recommend it. The windstopper hat was very good in strong wind and snow the other day and I wasn't cold even when I was really sweating. Besides it dries very quickly! Love it.... Gustav, Norway
