Description

Charge into the wild with dry, happy feet.

Safety in the mountains often equals moving quickly over varied and difficult terrain. Outdoor Research designed the Verglas Gaiters to carry light and travel fast. Whether you'rekicking steps up a fragile snow finger, skinning across a glacier, or negotiating a hairy bushwhack, you can't afford to snag, rip, or be bogged down with snow and debris. The asymmetrically-cut boot section provides a secure fit with leather hiking boots or plastic mountaineering boots, making the Verglas functional as much as a stout backpacking gaiter as it is a serious mountaineering gaiter. The ultra-light, waterproof, breathable 3-layer Ventia leg section and the coated 500d Cordura boot section make this gaiter a more packable alternative to the OR Crocodiles. A nylon-supported rubber instep strap pulls the gaiter down and flush with your boot to seal out snow and debris. Offset the 1.5in-wide hook-and-loop front closure if you need to make room for insulated pants.

Durable and Perfect For Winter!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wore mine all winter and even at points in the summer where bushwhacking was involved. They are super easy to put on, roll up nicely to fit into a pack when not in use and durable. I found them to be refreshingly water resistant as well. My only quip is that I did put a tear into these from a sloppy crampon maneuver at the end of last season. I am planning to sew it closed and take a piece of duct tape and line the inside of the incision with it to ensure that it does stay closed. For the money, get a pair for winter adventures -- stay warm, stay dry, have fun!

Worth the 30$

At this price point you might as well just add them to your cart, they are light and leave ample space underneath should you have on some very thick layering. I have chicken legs and if I wear a light pair of pants I have to tighten them down about as far as they go.

great gaiter

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Verglas is a good gaiter. Tough fabric. I'm about 5'8" and it comes to just below my knees, making it good to wear with shorts.

good gaiter

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

A good gaiter but I didn't get to take it out too much last year due to a lack of snow. Stayed up on the leg and connected well to my merrell boots.

Great Product

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I live in southern Oregon and snowshoe many times every winter, mostly in, and around the Crater Lake area. I?ve had the OR Verglas gaiters in size L for about 6 years and use them with Atlas Series 12 snow shoes. The ?fragile understrap? that everyone seems to be worried about has never been a problem. I wear size 13 boots (La Sportiva for snowshoeing) with lacing down to the toe area and one of the things I especially like about these gaiters is the toe clip reaches all the way to the end of the laces and, therefore, covers 95% of the top of the boot which results in much warmer feet that would be the case without the gaiters. I have never had wet or cold feet with these. I wear Marmot, lightly insulated (Spring/Fall/cool Summer days) hiking pants and use long johns for the really cold winter days and have never had the trapped moisture problem mentioned by one reviewer. OR makes some very nice products and the Verglas gaiter is another.

Awesome! A+++++++++++++++++

Live in Alaska and my husband wears Sorel boots and his pants and socks got wet from being outside working while in the snow. Not anymore! He loves these and comes home dry everyday now! Awesome product! Great deal for $37!!!!!

verglas gaiter

You all know it's a more than decent gaiter for the bucks; but what happens when you don't wear 'em when the snow is only a foot deep?
Well, you find post holes is what happens.
And with that snow in the boot.
And the resultant wet socks.
And cold feet.
And numb toes.
I learned my lesson.

using my gaiters to keep the poison ivy off my body.

LOVE THEM!!!

I get poison ivy really bad, so when I hike I wear my gaiters and long sleeve shirts. To keep me from getting too hot I wear the gaiters with shorts and i wear the long sleeve shirt unbuttoned. I can honestly say, since I bought these gaiters I have not had any poison ivy...that is about 2 years.
I also wear the gaiters when i hike in the winter, again with shorts. I never really get cold legs because I keep warm enough by hiking. If I do get chilly legs, I pull up my wool socks so that my entire calve is covered with my wool sock and gaiters.

LOVE THEM!!!

Easy to use, comfy

These gaiters are idiot-proof (if I can put 'em on, anyone can). They've survived spring and summer seasons over and under rain pants. I've taken them in the snow and had NO problems. The height is ideal over pants, though they look a little goofy when you're wearing shorts, but I'll take goofy over being eaten alive by mosquitoes. The color is nice, too.

These gaiters are durable, comfortable, and lightweight. I would recommend spending the money for them - you'll save even more than I did when I bought them last year. You won't be sorry.

Do what they are supposed to do

Just got back from snow shoeing with them. They are solid/waterproof and give you that snug feeling. The lace clip in front was a bit of a chore to get into my boots, and they are a bit tight to close, but once they are on, nothing is getting through them. I did not realize how much snow would have been in my boots, until i made a "nature call" in the middle of the night..

Good stuff

Seem to be pretty durable and water proof so far, I am liking them. My two complaints: 1)The strap securing system at the top of the calf isn't the easiest thing to fasten, especially if you are wearing gloves. It's a little hard to tell if you have the little latch all the way down or not. That being said, I haven't had any issues with it loosening up. 2)I am a little leery of the strap that goes under the boot; I feel like if something gives out, it will either be the strap itself or the buckle.

So far, so good. They keep the snow, water, and mud out and keep my feet much dryer (and thus warmer).

Outdoor Research Verglas Gaiter

After owning OR Croc's for five years, I was able to use my brother's Verglas gaiters last weekend. All in all, not much of a different between the two while hiking. So the Verglas doesn't use Gore-Tex, but for hiking, light mountaineering, snowshoeing and backcountry sledding these will do the job they intend to do. The strap that secures under the boot seems "flimsy" when compared to the croc's, but OR makes top notch gear and it has shown no wear or tear. Only caveat, the strap would not stay tucked away, and stuck out to the side as I hiked. Minor annoyance, but did not alter performance. Priced lower than the croc's, you are not sacrificing much.
As I have come to experience, OR has made another quality product.

Excellent value

Sure they're not Gore Tex but they're still excellent water proof protection. And the price is right, especially if you can catch them on sale. They add some warmth but aren't as breathable as I'd like. The upper strap can be a bit of a pain with gloves on, make sure it's closed tight.

Love my Outdoor Research Verglas Gaiters...!!

Solid product and a good value

I've used these gaiters for winter hiking and snowshoeing and they work very well at keeping me dry. Very easy to get on and off. I bought them one size smaller than the sizing chart recommended but they still fit easily over my hiking boots.

Solid product and a good value
