Functional for climbing & skiing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Very similar to Tyler Noonan's review, I also thought it dork-central to be snapping suspenders each morning before heading out, but they've become a necessary part of my kit and do what they should do...keep the pants up all day long, even making it so that I can loosen the velcro "belt" options on my Patagonia ski pants. The velcro makes these compatible with almost any pant, and as long as you don't mind a small twist when you put them through your belt loops, it's a lot cheaper than buying new ski pants!

Suspenders for Mountaineering and Skiing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I know it's not cool for a 28 year old to rock suspenders, but when I'm trudging or sliding through powder it's nice to not worry about your pants falling down. Suspenders are just the thing to keep snow from falling down your butt and keep the drafts out. The OR Suspenders are particularly nice because they have a velcro attachment/adjustment that doesn't tear the pants like clips. I've also found that there are a lot of other brands that have attachment loops for suspenders that are compatible with this attachment (refer to the discussion about attachments on this page).

How do these suspenders attach to your jeans?

There are three attachment loops on most OR pants that are compatible with the three hook-and-loop attachment points of the suspenders (as shown above).

There are other brands out there--like Mammut--that also use these attachment types and so these suspenders are compatible is several brands. Worse case scenario, you could do what Mr. Chess suggests, but not what these were designed for.

Like Kate said, some OR pants (and other brands) come with loops compatible with these. Conversley, you could have sew loops onto any pair of pants as I did with these softshells. I like the system quite a bit. They don't get in the way nearly as much as a belt does.
