Description

Keep your head dry and sweat-free in any downpour with the Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero.

The Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero is a burly full-coverage hat designed for extremely wet climates. In Seattle, there are two types of weather. It's either raining, or it's about to start raining. The Seattle Sombrero's waterproof breathable Taslan Gore-Tex to keep the downpour from soaking your head. Its soft brushed-tricot lining wicks moisture, and the chin strap is removable. The foam-stiffened brim on this Outdoor Research hat offers full protection from rain or sun, directing water away from your head when it's really coming down. And if things get really wet--like, you fall into the river you're rafting--the sombrero's foam brim floats. Maybe better than your boat.

Great Hat

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This hat sheds rain and wet snow, fits great, packs up small. We've had lots of rain in CO, this has come in handy.

AWESOME

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is my second one. I lost my first one after about 6 years and it was still in great shape. This hat stays in my truck at all times eady to be thrown in my pack or worn. sheds water great, it also blocks some sun on those cool fall days.

SE Alaska Must

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love the fleece lining! It keeps my head warm during the downpour. I use this on all my fly fishing outings. Water does tend to pool on top of the brim depending how you have the brim oriented. I wish I had gone up one size though. You can adjust the fit with a Velcro strap inside the hat, but I have mine maxed out and it fits tight. Still love the hat though.

Great for Europe!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

While in Europe- it poured on us! This hat was a life saver. I purchased the "red" in size "small" and both were true to color and size. I purchased the olive green for my S/O and he has enjoyed the hat as much as I have.

Do not use for surfing in the sun!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

It is a great hat otherwise, but the hat fills with water with heavy use in the ocean...

Love this hat!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I've never been disappointed with any Outdoor Research gear, and once again I'm satisfied with my purchase. I have used it out in the cold pouring rain and it kept me protected, and it's very comfortable. I would definitely recommend this!

Very pleased!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I was looking for an all weather hat to keep off the sun and rain. This hat was so highly rated that I decided to take a chance even though the standard comment was that it was not very attractive on. I got the hat yesterday and can't wait to wear it! The hat is VERY nice and looks nice on. The quality of the construction and the reviews that say it can take a beating and still look great for years won me over and I am glad I made this purchase. My husband liked mine so much that he wants one. I ordered the small based on the sizing chart and it fits EXACTLY right. While my husband's head circumference is the same, his head is taller from the eyes up and the hat fits a little small on him that way so he will go with the medium and just use the head band adjustment strap to tighten it a little if necessary.

Cowboy Khaki

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Love this hat. If you go above 75-80 it can get a little warm on top of the head. But for sun and rain its absolutely awesome. Flip up side to engage cowboy mode.

Best out there

From all the various rain hats I have had, this is the best by far. The standard to which all others are measured.

Superior rain proof hat!!!!!!!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

1000% waterproof, how's that for a review!
Lightweight, long extension for neck coverage. Front bill also protects against rain for those of us who wear glasses. Top part of the hat is goretex-lined for wind proof, as well as rain-proof protection! I wear mine in the winter as well -- top gortex section keeps the wind out.

There you have it, now get off the couch and get one of these great hats!!! Well worth the price. When, if, mine wears out I'll get another!!! You'll thank me later for this recommendation. I wear a 7 1/4, and I got the Large. What's nice is the internal velcroe adjuster, so you can both tighten or loosen the hat as necessary. Perfect fit no matter what. And the inside top is soooo soft as well.

Great for being in the rain

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the perfect hat for spending a significant amount of time in the rain. I love that it is waterproof and will keep your head dry. I have used this hat extensively in Alaska and fishing the northern Minnesota and it has never let me down. It is very packable and will roll-up and fit in a pocket while not is use. It is also lightweight so you feel like your not even wearing it. It might be a little warm for the middle of the summer but it does great the rest of the year.

Take care of business.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Ok, so I test products from W.L. Gore. And I used to live in Seattle. So I think that makes me qualified to review this. While I would not place this in the stylish category, it for sure takes care of business. It keeps you dry, keeps the sun out of your face, and is easy to clean. Keep this in your pack if there is a chance of rain, and it will make you one happy hiker. Not much else to explain, but another solid product from OR.

Substance over Style

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am a member of a GORE-TEX product testing team and received this hat a sample while working at a gear store about 5 years ago.
That said, these hats are great. They last forever (mine doesn't show any wear and tear and my father has had one for at least 10 years) and are very functional.
I will readily admit that they aren't the most stylish thing out there, but whether you're venturing out in the rain, wind or sun, this hat does a great job of protecting you from the elements. The brim keeps rain off the face and back of you neck and shades you from the sun. The velcro patches make it easy to hold the sides up and the chin cord ensures that your hat won't run away from you.
I use mine primarily in the rain and on river trips - they are warm enough that I don't love using it in the middle of the summer when it's hot and sunny out (although I have used it for that purpose on occasion).
The Sombrero's light and packs down enough that it will easily disappear in a back pack.
All in all, a great hat if you pick function over form.

Better than a ballcap

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Much better than a baseball hat at keeping the sun at bay. I used mine mostly during the summer down in the Gulf of Mexico doing work offshore, where there's only the sun and very little shade. It performed fine, was comfortable, and kept the sun at bay. The few times I was outside in a squall it did its job and kept the rain off, so no complaints there. It seems to be holding up fine too, despite being crushed in various bags etc during movements, so again, no complaints. Their sizing seems accurate as the large fits me well and thats what my hat size is. Overall a very nice hat!

For British summers

Bought this hat for my brother in law in the UK. He described it as the "best gift ever". Their summer this year set a bar which Seattle would be challenged to match ;-)

Dry Dome

Well this thing seems pretty solid. Very soft lining so my balding head feels great in it. There is an adjustable hook and loop strap inside to help get that perfect fit. Now I just need to get some rain. Best go to Seattle.
