weird fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

this jacket had a weird fit around arm pits. it might have been the wrong size, but everything else fit nice. the pockets were too high, again could be size related. the visor obstructed my view but it might be made to use with a helmet. returned.

great quality and attention to detail

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Top quality as usual from OR. Rain and snow bead off well and keep your inner layers dry. It has an athletic fit around the waist area which I like since it keeps it tight and less folding flappy stuff with a pack hip straps on. The hood fits snug over a climbing helmet while maintaining coverage, and it has a stiff brim which keeps it off your face a little better. Velcro cuffs allow heat dumping or sealing out the cold wind.Good design with the oversized pit zips doubling as front pockets saves weight. These zippers are water resistant and better than zippers with the flaps (on some other jackets out there) since those flaps get stuff in the zipper or get in the way. Although these water resistant zippers have a lot of friction though so can be a little hard to pull with gloves or mitts on. I've used the paladin in winter in oregon cascades during snow and wind. Kept me dry and warm. A softshell is lighter and probably more breathable for summer though. My body runs decently hot so with just a base layer and the paladin on my torso I was fine in 20-30 degree weather while snowshoeing or slogging up mount hood.
I know that RMI guides use this as their storm jacket

Very good value for money

This is the best jacket in Pertex I ever had. It is the first time that I really feel protected from the wet element by this membrane. I use it for everything, from cycling in the rain to skiing. I also feel that it breaths pretty well for a waterproof jacket of that category... It is not too heavy and doesn't take too much place in the back pack. I am 5'9, 195 lbs with long arms and the large fit perfect for me. I have it since 2 months and I have not seen any signs of wear. I recommend this jacket for the ones that doesn't want to have more than one shell and don't want to pay too much for it.

Good Lightweight shell Jacket

I got this jacket about 9months ago. I have used it in the North Cascades, Wasatch, the Alps and AK. I light how lightweight it is and there isn't all the "bell and whistles" on the jacket. It's simple and waterproof. Packs down to nothing in my backpack.

I'm 6'1, 160lbs and the Large fit me really good.

bad fit

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I'm 6'1, broad shoulder, the L size is very tight around the chest area and the XL size is way too big. This jacket was recommended by IMG for the Mt. Rainier trip and I just have to look for other storm jacket, can't comment on the performance of the jacket.

are the colors for sale on the site right now the same as the color of the jackets in the video? (they look a little more muted/flat than in the product pictures)

Mine looks like the one in pictures, not the video.

Diverse jacket/great price

I haven't found a jacket as diverse as the Paladin for such a good price. Take it skiing on the wet days and stay dry, or kayak with it on the ocean. A lightweight and durable jacket that is easy to move in. Great fit and color choices. A great purchase with no regrets! Hood fits nicely over a ski helmet, and no issues with keeping dry on a rainy day! Pit zips would be nice addition, but side pockets provide adequate ventilation! Great shell to wear over only base and mid layers on a warmer day, or over a down or fleece layer.

Incredible jacket

Incredible jacket, I used it for more than a week while working in a paramo in Colombia and even though it rained for almost all the time I spent there, i was always dry inside my paladin jacket and incredibly, even through many hours of hard walking, it always kept me fresh, loved its breathability.

If I'm 6'1 and about 215 lbs, what size...

If I'm 6'1 and about 215 lbs, what size do you think I would need? I'm wishy-washy about a L or an XL b/c you'd probably think i would need maybe the XL but I got an Outdoor research sequence tee recently in an XL but the thing swallows me. thanks for any input

Responded on

OR's shells runs large! I'm 6'2" 190lbs and I have plenty of room for layers under mine, the Medium fits around the body but not in arm length.

XL a good fit

I'm 6'5" 210lbs with broad shoulders. I ordered the Large but it was too snug in the armpits(with just a single layer under it) and the sleeves were about 1" too short. Not very comfortable. I exchanged it for the XL and the fit is great. Closer to a slim fit vs baggy and I have room for a few layers without restriction and the arms are 1" longer than the XL(verified with Outdoor Reserach customer service). Looking forward to putting some miles on this jacket. The avacado color is pretty sweet too.

Does anyone know how compressible this...

Does anyone know how compressible this jacket is? Especially compared to the Patagonia Rain Shadow... Cheers

Responded on

Its a single layer and only weighs 500g I would imagine It is very compressable
I have a similar jacket and it easily goes to about the size of a Nalgene bottle

Streamlined performance

I bought my Paladin to replace my Lockoff Jacket from The North Face, as I wanted something equally streamlined and lightweight with a trim fit. I originally wished the Paladin used GORE-TEX, but so far the Pertex has performed equally well. I've taken my Paladin on Cascades and Olympics backpacking trips -- summer and winter -- where its light weight and packability make it an obvious choice. I also wear it around Seattle on wet days. The trim fit is exactly what I was after, and I LOVE that the pockets double as vents - can you get more minimal than that? So far, so great.

Great Review! Which GORE-TEX fabric would you compare the Pertex to? PacLite or ProShell?

Also, what about durability with this...

Posted on

Also, what about durability with this Pertex compared to Gore-tex? I know you mentioned it was good but the Pertex I've seen is really thin. You feel this is just as waterproof as gore-tex? Thanks.

Responded on

The durability of the fabric depends on it's weight. This is a 30 denier nylon, so it's quite lightweight but still should hold up well. Any waterproof textile will be waterproof, and will stay that way for a long time. Gore-Tex and Pertex Shield DS are almost exactly the same thing, although for a rain jacket, I would go with something air permeable, which makes it a lot more breathable. Instead of Gore-Tex or Shield, check out something with eVent, or perhaps Stoic's Vaporshell jacket.

Responded on

Not wanting a purely rain jacket, but a tough shell. I am comparing this to the NF point five. I know they are different and the point five is more expensive. I just received my Paladin in blue and the material is pretty thin and feels like a NF Hyvent rain jacket I have. The material is stiff like the Hyvent also and would like to compare it to a Gore-tex 3 layer as I have never had one.

Bomber, lightweight, dry

What more could you want? I have been hammering this coat for awhile, it is standing up to the test of time for sure. I like the pertex fabric, you don't always need goretex that is for sure. Great fit, awesome zipper locations and the right mix of features and light weight that you will always use it and never wish for something more/different. Plus the avocado color is AWESOME!!!!

since these are trim fit, did you order a size up for layering?
