when will you guys be getting more Abyss size Large in stock? i ordered a size med, which would normally fit perfect, however, the length is a couple inches too short and the pit areas are a tad bit too restricting.

Best bet for an answer at this point will be to initiate a chat with a BC rep using the link at the top of the page, if you haven't already. Best of luck!

I bought this jacket 6 month ago and had the chance to use it in rain, shine and even snow. It is great to repel water and the hoop gives you more then enought space for a helmet. The only downside would be that it is not very warm. I'm 6' tall and 160 lbs and it fits great with 2-3 other layers under it. Great bang for you buck.

Great jacket

Bought this more as an around town shell with a touch of warmth, though it could potentially see some alpine use. Sizing is pretty trim and short, more like a mid layer than an outer layer, but the fabric is on the less stretchy/supple side for a softshell and I don't find it as comfortable as other softshells with a close fit. For these reasons, I sized up to an XL, whereas my 6'1" 190lb frame typically fits best in a Large. Oddly, I did come across what I can only guess was a size Medium tagged as an XL -- it was noticeably tighter fitting than a Large that I ordered for comparison. The second XL I ordered fit as expected, so watch out for that! Haven't really put it through its paces yet, but I expect it will be fine in the waterproof/windproof departments with breathability to be determined. Not a big concern with my intended use.

I really wish I didn't have to return this jacket, but with anything other than a tight fitting base layer, it is very tight under the armpits. I'm 6'2", 200lbs with a longer than average torso, but the rest of the fit for the jacket is perfect. Too bad really, as it breathes very well for a waterproof soft-shell, is made well, and keeps you dry.

For stocking issues, it is better the chat with a guru than to ask a question under the item. This gets easily overlooked, but chatting directly with an agent will get you a speedy answer.

What is the torso length of this jacket?...

What is the torso length of this jacket? I am 6'5" and really love the specs of this jacket. However, I am nervous about its length? Any suggestions?

It runs a little short in my opinion. I'm 6'4" 225 and the XXL is about an inch or two shorter than I feel it should be.

This jacket has an understated style to it in black, with the black-on-black tape.
It is however not very warm. With a long sleeve shirt and a light fleece, I am barely warm enough behind the bench at a hockey rink.
It fits true to size. I am 5'10", 160 and the medium is perfect.
One other minor gripe I have is that things have minor tendency to fall out of the pockets, as the part inside the pocket below the zipper is not very deep.
Overall, a great spring jacket or warm winter days in Ottawa.

This is a pretty sick jacket. The taped seems make for a unique/steezy look. This jacket works well, both as an "around the town" shell as well as a functional jacket. I've skied in it on windy, 10 degree days in New Hampshire with a Capilene 3 shirt underneath. I was cold on the lift, but nice and toasty on the way down. The jacket repels water and blocks wind like a champ. Its strechy and provides good range of motion for ice climbing as well. The insulation, is much more of a fleece lining as opposed to legit insulation, and if its more than chilly this jacket definitely requires layering. That being said, with a long-sleeve poly-pro base layer and a synthetic insulated sweater I was quite comfortable when the wind chill drop to 5 Fahrenheit and the winds gusted to 65 mph at the summit of Mount Washington. The internal "media player" pocket is a great addition and it allows your to run headphones up from the inside. The front pockets are big, an the zippers are bomber. Pit zips would have been a nice addition and the jacket is a little short. I am 6'2 and the large drops right to my hips, not leaving much over lap between jacket and pants - not for deep days. It fits under harness nicely, but if it were slightly longer I would have given it 5 stars. All around though, price factored in, its a solid jacket!

Great price, nice color and I liked the "attitude" of the visible taped seams. But, the fit-- it was very tight along back if I reached forward with a ski pole, and it needs another inch or so at waist level (other reviewers had same comment) since it pulls up when active and a frigid cold hits your waistline. Might fit better for others-- wish I didn't have to send this one back.

THis jacket had all that I was looking for .Except it was too small. If you are a xl order one size more. I am a 2xx and some stuff is really big on me then there is this jacket which was cool but just too small. dpM

This is the best jacket of this type I have owned. It is very well sealed to the elements and if you layer correctly it will keep you warm and dry. The material is tough and abrasion resistant. Of course, a lot depends on the activity, elevation, and weather; and your own personal heat generation. I have a lot of confidence in this jacket and I think it's a good value for the money.

I love it - it fits me well - I have long arms and a medium chest and it fits perfect in the chest and the arms are long enough. I'm not sure if it's waterproof in a downpour 'cause i haven't tested that yet, but I will. It's pretty warm, light though, and I've gotten more comments about this jacket than any piece of clothing I've ever owned. I'd buy another one today. Buy it - it's the perfect backpacking, everday, town-center, winter, rain jacket.

Wold this be warm comfertable jacket for backpacking and hiking for the mountians?

The insulation is by no means thick. With an insulating layer you would be quite comfortable!

Warm, comfortable, essentially waterproof, and built to last. Arguably the most bang for your buck you can find in a softshell. However, it does not have pit-zips and the Ventia fabric does not vent as well as Powershield or similar. It is made for what it says: activities in cold, wet weather. I would take this cold weather backpacking, particularly in the mountains.

Is the "soft fleece" lining in this jacket is a high pile like say the Arc'teryx Hercules of just enough of a fleece liner to ward off some cold?

Ian McCalder

Hey there Rwuff. It's not a high pile lining like the Herculues. It's very similar to the lining in a TNF Apex Bionic; just there to keep out a bit of the cold, but not really enough to act as an insulating layer (depending on your climate).

Can it be confirmed that the hood is NOT helmet compatible? Also anyone know if there is a powder skirt and if its cut on the short or longer side?

Looks like a contender with the Mt. Harwear Hooded syncro which does have a skirt and helmet ok hood

Hey kbuzz. I've tried this bad boy on and the hood is a little small for use with a helmet. You'd be better off cramming the hood under your helmet.

There is no powder skirt, and I found the jacket to be cut a little on the short side. It's a fantastic jacket, but it sounds to me like you're looking for a ski shell. This isn't really designed for skiing. Check out the MHW Kramer too. It's rad.

I bought one of these last year when I was in Seattle at the Outdoor Research store and it instantly became my favorite cold weather jacket. I've worn it in the rain and in the cold and for alpine skiing. It fits well and is bombproof. The hood will not fit over a helmet but that is the only fault I can find it with this jacket.
