Thanks to the Outdoor Research Women’s Mithril Softshell Jacket, you no longer need to choose between the stretch of a softshell and the waterproof protection of a hardshell. This hybrid jacket features Ventia waterproof softshell fabric, fully taped seams, and a cozy fleece lining for total protection and comfort during the cold, wet winter months.
Bottom Line: A double-duty shell for wet winter adventure.
I got the Plum color and I simply love it. I am 5'2'' and the size XS fits me perfect, even with room for some layering if needed. I like it is super lightweight, great for keeping you warm and save from the rain - it is a very good waterproof jacket with a pretty design. I've gotten may compliments as it is really super cute.
This is a great, well made, and nice fitting jacket. Took it out this weekend in backcountry Alaska in 40-50 F weather, constant drizzling rain/heavy mist and moderate winds. Wore it over an icebreaker shirt and down vest, and when those weren't enough, layered it on to be very happy and warm. Provides outstanding heat for how thin the inner fleece is, and the hood is deep and large enough to put my head, thick hair (in a ponytail), and hat inside with room to spare. Very waterproof; never once felt damp inside. Layered very nicely over my other clothes, and the arms are long enough for my ape-arms. Color is very attractive (I have the blue), and I've received many compliments. My only wish is that it had pit-zips for dumping excess heat on an ascent, but otherwise, great jacket. Would highly recommend for anyone encountering serious non-winter weather.
Has anyone used a soft-shell h20-proofing (NIKWAX softshell proof) on this jacket? I can't find any garment care recommendations, other than very basic care instructions.

The perfect jacket for softshell junkies. I fell in love with the mithril the moment I put it on. The fabric is thick enough to be warm and rugged, but still extremely breathable. I'm just shy of 5'10" and the sleeves and torso length is plenty long in a size large. The shoulder/arm construction allows total freedom of movement, which makes it great for almost any activity. The hood is roomy, comfortable and warm. I live in Seattle and I plan to live in this jacket all fall and winter. It's so comfortable I may wear it to bed.
Maybe. I'm 5'1" at approx. the same weight, and the jacket pretty much hit me just over my hips. I had other problems with the jacket though. I ordered a size large because I've got a big chest (D) and curvy shape, but the fit was funny (not ha ha). The jacket was snug in the chest, baggy in the waist, and with looooooong arms. I LOVED the jacket, but had to return it; that's just not the look I'm going for...
My bluebird OR Mithril softshell got as many miles on the ice as I did last year (over 65 days!)...did not go anywhere without her! First of all, she is a looker. I have never gotten so many positive comments about the appearance of a piece of outdoor gear. Personally, I love the fact that the Mithril keeps me warm, sheds waterfall/snow moisture, allows me to move on the ice without restricting my reach, has ample room in the hood for my helmet without messing with my peripheral vision and withstands the dangers of hanging out with sharp pointy objects...the fabric is tough!
I pair the blue Mithril Jacket with the OR Solitude Softshell Pants in espresso brown...a fabulously functional look.
What kind of layering would you suggest for mildly cold conditions with minimal exertion? A range of -10 to 30* F and long walks through the city. Would the Mithril provide enough insulation so that a fleece would be an adequate mid-layer?
Well, this jacket would be amazing with an extra fleece for ~20-40 degrees. For -10F to 10F? Definitely layer with a down/synthetic jacket.
Of course this all depends on how warm/cold you run. I run super cold so I layer with a down jacket the moment temps reach 35 degrees.
The beauty of this jacket is how well it blocks wind, which really steals your heat. It is a thicker softshell so the insulation factor is pretty great too.
I got this jacket for my mom to use for cross country skiing, bicycling in cold weather, and even backpacking. She wears it all the time and has told me several times how much she likes it. It has the look and feel of a soft shell but does a great job of keeping wet, heavy snow out. Highly recommended.

This jackets is pretty nice. It is water repellent and the adjustments on the hood are great. I mistakenly thought it was going to have a slightly higher loft fleece, so, I'm a little disappointed about that. I'm also unsure about the bulkyness of the elastic and velcro strap of the cuffs. I usually like to tuck my cuffs into my mittens when it gets cold but it seems like it might be a little bulky to do that.
After looking at both the Mithril and Intuition jacket, I settled on the Intuition, and I've found that it seems a bit bulky and constricts my movement a little bit (even though the size fits me fine). I also really don't like the collar in that it is very stiff and hits my chin too high. And the hood feels a little bulky when laying down.
Does the Mithril feel bulky at all or constrict your movement? And how do the hood and collar feel on your neck? I'm fine with the collar coming up a little over the chin, but the one on the Intuition jacket was very stiff and just hit me in the wrong place.
I am 5'9" and bought a large in the Intuition. I would probably order the same in the Mithril
This jacket performs great in the rain and the wind (it completely stopped 40 MPH winds!). It is very easy to move around in and special bonus, you don't have to listen to the regular raincoat crinkling because it is a softshell, though definitely a little stiffer than a regular one. The hood has a bungee on the back that works admirably at keeping the hood properly located on your head. I'm 5'3", 130 lbs, and I have a medium, which leaves space underneath for all of my base layers and a fleece (I wear this in all wet conditions, including the winter). If I were to use this just as a spring/fall jacket, I would go with a small.
Will this soft shell withstand torrential downpours, or all day constant rain? I am looking to use it backpacking through Oregon and Washington during the "rainy seasons", but would like to buy something that I will use more often then a regular rain jacket. I know it says waterproof, but I'm sure we've all experienced the different degrees of being waterproof. Thanks!
I just got the mithril a couple days ago, but it works wonderfully in the rain. It's got both a waterproof membrane and a durable water repellent finish. I'd be confident in this jacket for backpacking in this area.
This is a great all round jacket. Love the softness and fleece interior. It reminds me of the Mountain Hardwear Synchro jacket which I loved and wore out. In the winter I'll wear it with a vest.
I have spent most of the last three weeks wearing t my eggplant Mithril in New England and it functions super well on long rainy foliage hikes. Truly great beathability in high humidity environment. The color is stops people on the street, pretty cool. I think I will wear my ergo jacket and this soft shell for many days of skiing this winter.
Hi, I am also in New England and looking at this jacket for a potential ski shell. I do want to be able to wear a midlayer underneath obviously. What size did you go with, and has it allowed for a midlayer? I am 5'4 and 125 lbs.
What a spectacular jacket! It's only October, and already it's shielding me from wind, rain, and the damp Northwestern chill. This coat is very thin, but dense--almost like a super-thin version of neoprene, except it's fleecy soft on the inside. The hood is cut high at the neck to protect your face, too. All in all, an excellent winter coat. Love the eggplant color this year, too!
