Great hat, every feature my wife wanted!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Don't be fooled by the relatively low ratings. As I write this review, there are four others, but three of them are from the same person: Two 3 star reviews, an accidental double-post, and then a third, 2 star review from the same reviewer yet again who was frustrated because they thought their first review had been deleted, so they gave it an even lower rating. Most of the complaints were about packaging or service, only one comment even related to the hat at all. The remaining 5-star review is spot-on: The hat is lightweight, waterproof, adjustable to fit your head perfectly; the top is a light color good for use in the sun, with darker color under the brim which is good for vision in bright sunlight. The brim is big enough to protect, small enough to be OK for "stylish" wear in the city, too. The brim is slightly wider in the back, so it is going to do a better job of keeping rain off your collar and not dripping down your neck.

Great hat: terrible packaging

Finally, a truly waterproof hat that is sized for a smaller head. If you're tired of having a hat fall down to your eyebrows, this one's for you. The drawstring keeps it on your head when the wind is blowing--a big plus recently. And the brim is big enough to be protective, but also small enough to look like city clothes, rather than just camping gear. A good product. But the packaging was terrible. When we opened it up, a strong, acrid chemical odor came out of the bag. It was fairly sickening. We got the bag out of the house and aired out the hat. No lingering smell, but we still wonder what chemicals were in that plastic packaging.

    some unexpected happenings

I don't know how this hat is going to "perform" as that will take a while to evaluate. I do know that for a $50 hat, I was surprised how it was delivered: in a USPS bag, unwrapped...no bag...plastic or otherwise, no tissue paper...nothing....just thrown into the mailer.
Also disappointing was a big, black adjustment knob on the outside of the hat on the brim!!!! Not pictured!!! I know why: it's ugly. The hat comes in S,M, and L...so why would it need an ugly black adjustment knob?

???what about quality shipping and customer service?

I got this hat in "Rose," which, upon arrival, was far more reddish in color than the dusty pink it appeared to be online. It's mainly for birding. Birds shy away from birders who wear red, but pink is OK. Is OR's "Rose" too red for birding?
