When nasty weather strikes in the mountains, you need the versatility and protection of the Outdoor Research Men’s Metaphor Jacket. This three-in-one jacket features a waterproof breathable Gore-Tex Paclite Shell with Gore-Tex Pro Shell reinforcements, as well as a warm removable layer stuffed with EnduraLoft synthetic insulation. For cold, nasty storms, wear the whole system together for warmth and water protection. For warm, rainy conditions, zip up the shell, which features a stowable hood and full pit-zips for high-output days. When you’re stuck at a cold, dry belay waiting for your partner to finish the pitch, slip into the insulated liner jacket, stuff your hands into the lined pockets, and cinch up the dual hem draw cords to keep the chill out.
Bottom Line: Fully functional in any mountain conditions.

Without the inner liner, is this a very light jacket? I actually like jacket that is slightly thicker with more of a body than the really light material.. I got the Outdoor Research Celestial Jacket from your site for my wife. She loves that jacket but I felt it is a little too thin for my liking. How is this jacket compared to the Celestial??

The shell is very durable Gore-Tex and the inner jacket is super light yet very warm. I think the outer jacket fit is more parka-like than technical jacket. The 3-in-1 system isn't the best (lack of front zip-in feature) but it still has many buttons and a back zip-in. The inner jacket fits more like an athletic fitThe outer shell makes this a very waterproof and windproof system. It was a great deal when I got it on-sale.

This is a close up of the two different liner materials. The dark liner on the left really does look and feel like rubber and is thicker. Does anyone know what this material actually is?

pretty sure it's gore-tex paclite. i have a rain jacket made out of the stuff, and that's what the inside of my jacket looks like.

other way around...most of the body is gore tex paclite and the shoulders are gore tex pro, because those are high abrasion areas...paclite is the thinnest and lightest of gore tex fabric and gortec pro is the thickest (3 layers) and most durable--That rubbery material is a Polyurethan liner that sits between your skin and the Gore-Tex material. The actual PacLite membrane (the part that breathes) is between the grey liner and the outside of the jacket. If you're concerned about the breathability, go work up a sweat in the jacket and see how much moisture it retains.

This is really good. The shell itself has no insulation at all, which I wished it had a bit, but the separate liner is warm enough to compensate. I wish it has more pockets.

This is the inside of the Metaphor. The light gray area is the soulder area, Gore-tex Pro? The dark area which takes up most of the inside is the Pac-lite? Yes it is, but.. the Pac-lite looks and feels like rubber and it does not look like it breathes. The Pro material looks and feels thinner. What is this dark gray material laminated onto the Pac-lite?

This is more of a waist (or slightly longer) length jacket. I wouldn't recommend it for covering your butt. You might look into a Patagonia Powder Bowl Jacket for that. They are on sale on their website at the moment for $210.

Recently, I had the opportunity to use this jacket in Plymouth,Massachusetts. This jacket was recommended by backcountry.com's online chat. The jacket kept me very warm when I walked along the shore and was great at night. I had to take the jacket off when ever I went inside. The temperature ranged from 35 to 50 degrees. The wind made it even cooler and even some rain did not effect the ability of this jacket to keep me warm.
Specs say hood is "stowable". Can it also be detached?

How long are your arms? Ie. what size dress shirt do you wear? I wear 34/35 and the XL was just a little long for me. Maybe 1" too long so not too bad. OR stuff generally has longer arms than normal. You might also check out the Backcountry Stoic shell. It's an absolutely amazing shell, very comparable to GoreTex Pro Shell and the arms tend to run plenty long. Check 'em out, they're really amazing!Hope that helps.

This ski jacket is a bomb shelter. im 6'2 and 160, its got plenty of space for me so i would say it would be perfect for you in a L. also backcountry would be happy to swap the gear if you have the wrong size.

Nope. OR designs most of their stuff to layer rather than zip, so if you need to remove a layer you're only working with one zipper instead of fussing with a second one.
