Very Nice Pants With Weird Fit

Great pants -- have kept me dry and happy resort skiing as well as snowshoeing and skiing in the bc. No real complaints at all about function, especially for ProShell at this price.
I wish I liked the fit as much as I liked everything else about them though. These pants are very fitted (by shell standards) in the legs. But then the waist/bib area is gigantic. I am 5'10", 175ish lbs. The medium was practically skin tight on my legs. The large fits pretty well in the legs (still too slim for anything but a base layer) but has an incredible amount of spare room in the waist and bib -- even with my top base and mid layers tucked inside the bib.

Bomber pants, short suspenders

- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
These things are built to last with incredible attention to detail and are very comfortable (other than issue noted below). After comparing these to many other top brands, these definitely come out on top. They would be getting 5 stars if it weren't for the non-removable suspenders being too short (even when fully extended), which makes them ride up in the crotch. I'm 6'1" & 170 lbs and the belt must be cinched almost completely and suspenders let out all the way to make these close to working. Unfortunately, I had to opt for another pant due to the suspender problem. Appears OR expects their customers to be shorter and heavier... :-( I had a size medium.

Do the side zips have 2 or 4 zippers per side for venting? I prefer 4-that way the bottom and top stay zipped and you can open a section anywhere on your leg you want to air out. Its not clear from the picture or description. Thanks!

There are 2 zippers per side. The top stays closed with the industrial hook-n-eye tab. The bottom stays closed with a snap button.
Three reasons to go with 2 zippers and these reinforcements than with 4 zippers. There is no fussing with double zippers when you need to get in/get out of the pants, it is more weather resistant (no hole between zippers for moisture/wind to leak through), and it shaves weight (albeit ounces) off.

I have been wanting bibbed pants for quite some time and decided to go with these. I just got them and found that I can't lift my leg as high without resistance as I could in my Arc'terys pants that are also a medium. Does anybody else feel that their movement is a little restricted or do I just need a different size?
c2summit

I had these and now the the Arc's which have more articulation in the knee. So yes, the OR's are a bit more restricting (and also a few hundred clams less).

I'm considering these as a replacement for my bibs. Do these go up above the waist (like true bibs) or do they stop at the waist?

Sizing.
I am 5' 10" 155 lbs with 32 inch waist. Does M fit me good? I'm going to wear these over fleece pants like patagonia R1. In sizing chart, M is the size for me, but some reviewers report that the pants are a little baggy. Is it better to go S?

I am 5'9 155lbs to 160lbs with a 32 inch waist and these pants fit fine with room to spare for your fleece pants....

Thank you, Mike. I bought medium and these pants are perfect fit over my fleece pants. I usually wear 32 x 32 pants.
best thing out there

I researched pants like this for a few months before going with these. I think I made a good choice. For me a medium ran a little large in the waist (im 6'2" with a 33" waist) but they will allow for me to fit them comfortably over my soft shell pants if I'm out in really cold conditions. The extra material does not bother me at all with normal base layers.
The venting options are good (full length from top and bottom) the suspenders are adjustable and comfortable. I love the low bib design, it is very nice with a harness on and keeps the cold and snow out. The bib material is more of a softshell like material and is a bit more breathable. The zippers are good and waterproof and the material overall is very tough. The internal gaiters are removable.
In my opinion you could not get a better pant for wet winter climbing.

Yes. "Removable suspenders keep these versatile pants from dropping when you drop in."

nice pants. fit great through the legs and nicely over ski boots. i tried a LOT of pants on. these are a bit longer in the leg than most, which works for me. the half bib is nice. lots of extra material in the back of the bib, though. i might try to sew it up or something. that's the only negative.
overall, slightly bigger than true fit, particularly in the waist/stomach/but. very true fit (in a modern, not too tight) kind of way through the leg.
kept me nice and toasty and dry. go for it.

Size Question
I am 36 waist with somewhat larger thighs...are the XL (which are said to be 38 waist...and L which is 35 waist) going to fit without too much extra material? Thanks, Geoff
Mike Traslin

They have a leaner fit,so you will not have issues with extra material!

I thought these ran a bit big. Im 6'2" 33" waist and a medium is good in length but a bit sloppy in the cut. These allow for generous layers underneath for me.

I'm also a 36" waist with thick thighs. The pant fits me great although I'm a tad height challenged at 5'9" so with my 30" inseam they're a bit long. I remedy this with the elastic cuff tensioner. This allows me to use them without the zip-in/out gaiter...at least with my tele and AT boots. My favorite.

Are these sized to fit a midweight insulating layer or are they form fitting? I have the mentor jacket & it can easily fit a midweight layer, but I'm not sure how the pants compare.
Gabe H.
Member since
sized correctly, you can easily wear a midweight layer such as a fleece tight over your base layer -although, unless you're in really cold conditions, a heavier weight base layer alone with the pant will keep you really warm, especially if you are active/moving.
Nice, but fit is not perfect

Everything is great except the material at the back bunches up. They fit kindof big in the waist, even with a jacket tucked in. I bought a L because I'm 6'2" 180lbs, 34" waist. They could easily fit a 230lbs dude with a gut. I will definitely be visiting my tailor to get these altered.
Other than that, they are amazing - first pant/bib I've ever owned that could keep me completely dry! They are also very lightweight!

I'm 6'1", 205, with the approx. the same waist as you. I got the XL and sent them back immediately. Too tight in the crotch. Weird fit. I'd go with the XXL if you wanted to stay with OR, but I'd go with Arcteryx next time.

LIGHT, BUT BEASTLY. Bottom Line: Add this to your mountain arsenal.
Goretex Pro is incredible - Shucks water like oil. Even literally sitting on water, wet snow, etc. I never once got wet. The detachable internal gaiters are a genius innovation, not seen by many (if any???) other brands. The mid-level bib is a perfect compromise between pants and full bibs. The lighter fabric on the back does not compress completely against your back, however this is a purely aesthetic gripe as I noticed absolutely no excess fabric while wearing a pack. Full-length zips allow venting to your liking. As far as color, the gray is darker than the picture shows and looks fine.
Size question...I haven't worn OR pants...

Size question...I haven't worn OR pants before so I'm not sure if I should be a large or extra large. I'm 6'2", 210...generally I were a 36 waist which puts me in a large pant for other brands. But OR list large at 35. I will mostly wear the shells with long underwear, but being able to put a fleece layer would be nice...though I'm afraid the XL's will be too baggy. Sorry for rambling...any help would be appreciated.
Steve Tibbitts

Hey Andrew,If you're just looking at putting some long'johns and some thin fleece pants underneath you'd be fine in the larges. If you're looking to layer something quite a bit thicker underneath I'd go with the XL's. They XL's actually aren't a ridiculous amount bigger than the larges. These are great pants by the way!
Amazing Pants!

I almost bought Arc'teryx in fact I tried both on at backcountry's retail store..... I liked these better. They fit great, harness fit perfect around them and they're water tight! There's plenty of venting but the gators work great! I use a pair of external gators when I'm in crampons just in case but these are really the best. They're lite but very durable! Probably one of the best things I've added to my arsenal!
I wanted to buy arc'teryx....

I hate buying stuff from China. For a thousand reasons that I won't go into. I would much rather buy all my clothing from Arc'teryx (although even their low-end stuff is made in China now). On the other hand these pants fit the bill. Full length zippers to get off when you have your double plastic boots on with crampons. They seem a little delicate, but very light. These companies are responding to the "lighter!" call we as consumers give them. I think with items like this, it is getting to be overkill. One rip on Denali and you'll be cursing them forever.

An exceptional technical pant for skiing, mountaineering and all backcountry activities that is set apart by its trim, athletic cut. No bags, sags or bulges here. It fits true to size but unlike the display photo and description, it is a mid-level bib with suspenders that can be detached in front but not removed. On a recent wet snow outing it proved to be completely weather proof and very breathable. The well tailored cuff and its drawstring eliminate the need for an external gaiter under most circumstances. Minor issues: the fly needs zipper pulls and the stretch back panel does not fit smoothly against your back.
