A waterproof breathable Pertex shell and lofty 650+ fill down insulation prepare the Outdoor Research Megaplume Men's Down Jacket for hardcore use in the high mountains. The removable hood lets you seal in the warmth for a long ice-climbing belay, and you can leave it behind to save weight when the weather looks promising. Outdoor Research included two large internal mesh pockets to hold your water bottle and warm your gloves for the next pitch. The Megaplume Down Jacket also has tricot-lined hand pockets that keep your hands toasty and reduce the chance of a round with the screamin' barfies.
Bottom Line: Stay warm through frigid mountain weather with the Outdoor Research Megaplume Down Jacket.
After extensive searching around and trying everything, this jacket has to be the best downy out there. Functional everything: hood (huge, snug and comfy closure), nice pockets, perfect sizing (ie. just a bit bigger than everything else you own so you can put it on top), very well made. That being said, this is a lightweight warmth layer for mountaineering, probably not going to stand the abuse of tree skiing for many seasons. It is very durable for just about everything but shrubbing up against bark at mach speed. I am 5 feet 11 inches and ~165lbs and the M fits nice and big so I can wear it over my stuff when it blows. Order your regular, everyday size for this one. Nice job OR!
Let me start off by saying this jacket is excellent. Most importantly, it is very warm. It comes down right below the belt line and the thing is absolutely jam packed with down. Incredibly, it is 100% windproof and repels water effortlessly! It has kept me warm on several winter excursions in the Eagle Caps. The design and quality is very good. It is very light and packs into a stuffing sack about the size of a football. The hood is very warm and large enough for a helmet. If there was one thing I could change it would be the outer shell. The pertex is everything it advertises (windproof/super-water-resistant), but it is pretty thin. While snowshoeing, I slipped and caught a thorn or sharp branch on the way down. It tore right through the pertex shell leaving a hole in the right sleeve. Thank goodness for the unlimited lifetime warranty! To sum up, this thing can easily handle any subzero outdoor activity, but be mindful of the thin outer shell (which really isn't all that different from outer shells on other jackets designed for similar purposes).
Temps drop to as low as -30 on some of the worst Afghani winters. Lows normally hover around 0/-10 to -20 during the average low points. Would this 650 fill be alright with some layering, if I don't plan to hang around outside for extended periods?

Amazing jacket. Surprisingly light in weight, but the warmth and comfort have transformed my opinion of Chicago winter! Even with only a shirt on underneath, the jacket is more than warm enough to be very comfortable in brisk cold wind (not yet hitting the real mid-winter cold, but feels like there's more insulation than needed to combat whatever the midwest can dish out).
Basically I was looking for a warm, and great looking jacket. This jacket meets both of those requirements. I'm in an area where the average temp is -20c from Nov to March. This jacket is perfect for this type of weather, versatile and deflects snow well. On occasion the feathers seem to work there way out, but its a rare event. The jacket packs down and reforms with ease. I highly recommend this jacket for weather thats colder then -10c.
I am 5'10-11", ~165 lbs, and I ordered the large and it fits great! It has enough room for me to wear layers underneath in ultra cold northern Minnesota, and waterproof enough for me to jump in the cold shower with. It has plenty of pockets, and the hood has room for me to keep my climbing helmet on. All in all, I am very happy with this jacket.
