    Save your scalp.

That small, exposed piece of scalp on the back of your head serves as a very painful reminder that you're going bald after a long day out in the sun—save yourself the burn and unwanted reality check with the Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat. The elastic drawcord keeps the hat glued to your melon when you're floating down a windy river, and the adjustable chin strap serves as a fail safe, just in case you start to feel the Helios peel back from your head under pressure from heavy-handed winds.

    Excellent Sun Protection

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Sure no one looks good in a boonie hat but when you are spending serious time in direct, vengeful, burning, burning, sunlight you'll just be happy your ears and neck aren't burnt to a crisp. The brim on this hat is substantial enough to not flop down while the top is super thin and lightweight while still maintaining a UPF 50 rating. The strap is easily removable and there's a pull cord just above the brim to really cinch the hat down around your dome.

I wear this hat at work which is always in direct sunlight (installing solar panels) and it works flawlessly where a baseball cap just wouldn't cut it. After awhile the cap did get sweaty and stinky so I just threw it in the washer, I'm not sure if that's manufacturer recommended but it seems no worse for the wear and smells like lavender. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs serious sun protection in a lightweight and packable hat.

    Awesome hat

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

This hat's perfect for anything from doing yard work to wandering through the desert. Basically, if you're going to be out in the sun and want your own personal shady oasis then look no further. You've found it.

Cools Down Instantly, Best Hat Ever Ownd

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Work outside 8hrs a day. Come rain or shine this has protects from searing heat, It cools down instantly.
It keeps the rain off my neck and out of my eyes and ears.

helios sun hat is light and reliable!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

I bought this for my man so he could protect his shaved head from some major sun burns during the summer. He works on roofs and his baseball caps were protecting his head but didn't breathe at all so his head was hot, sweaty and itchy. From the first day he wore this, he's kept cool and dry and says it's so light that he forgets it's even on. LOVES his Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat and won't leave home without it. He's got a pretty average sized noggin - I think he wears a small medium in mesh baseball caps - the medium fits perfect.

    Pewter version

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

First off the suggested hat size worked like a charm - this particular hat fit perfectly. In addition to the nice checked pattern I like that the brim isn't too wide. The brim is flexible enough to enable me easy access to the view finder on my camera. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase - just wish the price point for free shipping was lower.

Nice hat, if it fits your head

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

As other reviewers have noted, it looks dorky, but that's not the point for this hat. If the hat fits you, it's a great lightweight way to stay protected from the sun.

Unfortunately I can't use it because even the largest size doesn't fit me. I'm a hat size 7¾ (which is typically an XL size) and the XL was too small. There's no larger size so if you are 7¾ or larger you are SOL.

What can I say about this hat that hasn't already been said. It is rad. It is durable, packable, lightweight, wicking, floatable, protective, easy to fit, and goofy looking. Well, I personally love the look when you're out hiking or floating on the river, but I get why some people make fun. When I was in Central America and wore it to the beach every day, it earned me some not so favorable nicknames, but kept me from getting toasty fried. As a German boy from Minnesota, this hat has been with me on every recent adventure that could involve UV rays. In the long run, it will save you money on sunscreen for your upper face and neck.

I may not always properly protect the rest of my body from the sun (see picture), but my head is protected with my OR Helios

    Am I really this old?

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

I'm still a young lad, but when I put this hat on I reminisce to the days of old when I would romp around in the sun all day without the slightest concerns of skin cancer or liver spots. How could I have been so naive? Although when I'm trying to look really hip or feeling just plain risky I leave this hat at home, but when I want a lightweight, comfortable, high quality hat to bring on adventures, this is a great choice.

    high quality and simplistic

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

Bought this for my husband. The hat is simple but it is the high quality you expect from OR. The brim provides good coverage but is not overly bulky like some sombrero type sun hats. The brim maintains shape but it is flexible. You could stuff it into a pack with no problem. There is a cinch cord around the inside of the brim which is great for getting a snug fit.

    Exactly what I wanted

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I was looking for a hat that was cheap and wouldn't make me look like a goofball. My head is 58cm in circumference and I bought the Large size. It is great with some extra room for my buff on hot days. The cinch cord is great to get a tight fit and the chin cord ensures i wont lose the hat in a gust of wind! But just in case you do, it does float on water!

    Goes with me everywhere

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I've had this hat for years and it goes with me everywhere. I'm bald but the UPF 50 rating has never let me down and I've been in many sunny places for extended hikes and stays. It's been thoroughly used and abused. When I come home, I just untie the neck strap and throw it in the washer. It still looks pretty much new.

The brim does not have a wire in it so you can just squish it into a backpack and it'll recover fine.

I do feel the "OR" logo in the front is about too much. It's large and very visible on the sand color I have. I'd prefer something more subtle.

Works well in the rain too!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This type of hat isn't my usual style but I felt I needed something that would provide more sun protection than my normal ball cap. I ended up using this more in the rain than in the sun (ha!), but wow was it good! I wore it under my rain jacket hood but the front part of the brim protruded from the hood and did a great job of directing the water away from my face. The material beads up water and doesn't soak through over periods of torrential rain. It dries quickly and retains the brim shape well even after being folded up.

Not too keen on the style but I would recommend it for practical purposes if you are in the market for this type of hat - it works for both the sun and rain.

    Hey Ron,

So personally I'm a fan of the OR Sombriolet Sun hat.

    http://www.backcountry.com/outdoor-research-sombriolet-sun-hat?rr=t

I like sombriolet shape, its longer in the back and has a larger brim all round. There are slit vents along the dome to cool your melon.

The transit hat has more mesh siding on the dome, I just prefer the other shape.

    Hope that helps!

I need a large Kid size age 5,6,7 with this style of hat, color sand, do you have it?? Item: ODR0223

    Hi nla5644521,

    if you go here: http://www.backcountry.com/outdoor-research-helios-sun-hat-kids

And you use the drop down button on the upper left side, you'll see that the color Sandstone is out of stock in the Large size--the typical size for a 5,6,7 kid...

If you'd like to know when it'll be back in stock, try using the "Chat" function on backcountry's website--they handle stock issues better than these question forums do (the people answering questions are typically not backcountry employee's).

I have been trying to find a replacement for a dome shaped travel hat with a 3" brim and a chin strap labeled "Head Trip" and the words "Long Range" on one side and an emblem of a star, bolt of lightening and some other symbol in a red and blue square. The Hat is made in the USA. Does anyone have knowledge of this product? Is your product similar. Is it US made? Nate - sorry - I lost your reply. Please try again?

My head measures 23" and I know the large is supposed to be 23 1/4". Would I be better off getting the xl instead?

That is up to you. The hat is going to break in and stretch out a little. The XL may fit a little loose, but it also depends on how much hair you have. If you like a snug fitting hat, just get the Large and it will stretch and be more comfortable after a while.

Does this hat have any adjustment, my head measurement is 24.5 inches so I'm wondering if the XL is going to fit?

The hat is not adjustable, and size XL fits up to a 24" melon. It's darn close to 24.5", though not quite there. I know that even 1/2 inch can mean the difference between a comfy fitting hat and a ridiculous looking brain-constrictor. That said, backcountry.com offers a completely unlimited return policy, so you can get your moola back, or switch it for a bigger hat.. no worries.
