When you’re moving fast and need to keep snow, rocks, and other trail junk out of your boots, pull on the Outdoor Research Flex-Tex Gaiters. This softshell gaiter features tough yet stretchy Cordura nylon that resists mud and moisture on quick creek crossings or wet-weather hikes. The lightweight design conforms to nearly any footwear, and an underfoot lace and front lace hook keep the gaiter securely in place.

Here's what others have to say...

Worked Great

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought two pairs of these for my girlfriend and myself before hiking the reputedly wet and muddy Tonquin Valley hike in Jasper Natl Park. These did not disappoint one bit. They breathed extremely well and kept my boots dry!

Great gaiter for intended purpose

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The FlexTex Gaiter works very well with trail runners, light to mid weight hikers, as well as lower profile cross country ski boots. They stay in place nicely, and are easy on and easy off - very packable too. Construction is good as well as weather resistance. Nice Job OR!

Nifty and well designed

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have full sized Gore-tex OR gaiters (knee height) which are great for snow shoeing (my shoes tend to flip the snow up the back of my leg) and wanted something for less challenging uses, such as hiking on muddy or hard-packed trails. These are perfect for this use- they are high-ankle/low calf height, the gaiter material has a nice stretch to it, there are extra velcro tabs at the top and bottom that really lock it on your leg tightly, the strap under the heel is very durable and adjustable, and they are a breeze to put on and take off. The L/XL is sized quite reasonably for my various boots (size 10 US lows and 44.5 Euro highs) - probably mid-range for the L/XL size. They are not Gore-tex but do a nice job keeping mud, debris and light water off your shoes and pant cuffs. Great product, reasonably priced, but unfortunately, made in China.

Short but Solid

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have been wearing tall gaitors for 10 years and was a bit nervous to switch to a short gaiter since I am short and like the extra protection on my legs. But just like switching from my limmers to patagonia shoes for hiking, the switch made a big difference. I am a women's 9 and the L/XL worked perfect for me. Hugs my calves and am able to put socks and pants in them just fine. I couldn't use my other gaiters with my shoes because they kept creeping up my heel and not forming solid protection in that area, so the elements were hitting my socks. That definitely doesn't happen with these. Great buy.

work great

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Used them on a 12 mile hike in the snow, easy to put on and they stay put, went over rocks and mud and the straps don't show any wear yet. Kept all the junk and snow out of my boots, I have size 9 boots and I got the L/XL size. They did keep my feet dry.

What size do I get if I am a Women's 9?

If you have delicate calves and/or plan on wearing these with low-profile pants/boots, go M. If you have heavily muscular calves and/or plan on wearing these with thicker pants/bigger boots, go L.

If you have a size 10-13 shoes and they aren't larger profile boots (insulated, plastic, etc), they should work fine.

L/XL. That size chart attached is wack... Definitely L/XL.

Will these fit over a pair of Limmer heavyweights?

I use these with Asolo Sasslongs - which are not super bulky but big enough - and they have plenty of room to spare. I would say yes - as I used to have a pair of Limmer's.

Solid Product, Great Customer Service!

These fit over a variety of shoes and boots for me, stay in place all day, keep junk out of my shoes and are (on average) as water-resistant as whatever's left of the gore-tex shoe lining at that point in the season. I should splash around in fewer puddles if I expect dry feet. They're great gaiters!

OR is serious about the lifetime warranty. After a lot of side-hilling on rocks and scree, the buckle prongs bent and eventually broke off. The rest of the buckle looked like it'd been ground in a kitchen garbage disposal for a few hours. Interestingly, the underfoot straps were still going strong, and the rest of the gaiter was as good as new. I think that means that other than the buckles, these things are close to indestructible.

The OR rep was helpful and quick to offer to a replacement or repair. I was worried that the replacement wouldn't arrive in time for the next trip, so I bought another pair of the same gaiters. However, the new ones arrived eerily fast, and now I have two pair!

Keeps all the hitchhikers out

These are great lightweight gaiters. They fit great on trail runners but also on my Sportiva Glaciers if the knee highs are unnecessary. They definitely do the job keeping hitchhikers out and even keep water out on creek crossings. Only complaint, I have a L/XL and its a slightly loose fit at the top in the L/XL for a 43.5 for which the S/M is way too small

Love them

They are light, small, easy to carry. Fit over my Trango boots and climbing pants. Used it for snow-shoeing, hiking through snow and ice climbing, they worked great

Love it

bought those gaiters for snowshoeing and ice climbing, they were great! light weight and stretchy, they worked perfectly over my climbing boots/pants

Perfect for hiking

I have an older model of the Flex-Tex Gaiters by OR that come with a tied cord instead of a strap and I still love them. These only seem even better. I love the stretchy material that fits snug but not tight around the lower calf. I was worried that these might snag and run with lower thorns or bushes but haven't had an issue at all. I used these for hiking in all but the worst wet/snow weather but I did see one of our guides go up Rainier wearing these instead of the beefier Crocs so you know you can't go wrong.

Trail running

I love to trail run, and these gaiters work great for me. They fit well over my salomon trail runners, and the under strap is very durable. Over time, and lots of rocks, it did wear out, but with OR's lifetime warranty they were replaced without any hasel. I really like that OR doesn't use elastic at the top of these gaiter, it makes them alot more comfortable on long runs. Great product for me..!!

Coast Mountains....

Never used gaiters for trail hiking and running before....These gaiters came in handy on a resent trail hike run, keeping debris and dirt out....

After a few hours I forgot I was wearing them, they fit snug on my trail run hike shoes....Which was a good thing because it kept things sleek....After an all day hike it was good to have drier feet....

Responded on

I started wearing them for hiking a couple seasons ago if the weather is nasty. They protect my legs and help keep my feet dry.

Runs really small

The design on these seemed ok but I got the S/M and they were way too small. I have the winter veriglass gaiters in this size from the same company but these summer ones run smaller. I have totally average calves not skinny or big and wear a size 8 shoe. These were snug on my angles in bare feet with no socks. With any shoes or pants on at all the velcro wouldn't even meet. I'm just going to stick with my veriglass winter gaiters since I'm not a trail runner but was looking for some poison oak and sticker protection.

Great for Trail Run Shoes

Used these for a couple adventure races and hikes through areas full of poison oak. They work really well, but as many echo below they are small and designed to be used with hiking/trail run shoes. I have been able to fit pants under them just fine. Size 11.5 shoe and purchased the L/XL. Also purchased the L/XL for my fiancé who wears a woman size 9, which was also a good fit. Solid OR construction and seem super durable. Just make sure to close up the velcro when washing, otherwise they will stick to everything else in the wash...tearing the crap out of light merino shirts! Darn it!

I'm afraid I had to return these. I wasn't looking for a full size gator, but I wanted it to be form fitting (not those cheap poofy things.) So yeah, like everyone else has stated, these are small. They might work great for trail running or just keeping skree out of sneakers while hiking in shorts, but there is no way you are fitting pants under them and they had a hard time fitting over the top of my midtop hiking boots. The construction seems solid, but to repeat myself: I would not recommend these for anything other than trail running.
