OR Enchainment Soft Shell

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love this jacket, its windproof and fairly waterproof (I say this because I've only ever worn it in light snow as of now). The pockets are high enough that you can easily put your hands in them when wearing a pack w/a hip belt, and I love the chest and the inner security pocket. The hood is just the right size and it stays put. A note on fit, I bought a medium and I usually layer a base layer and a fleece underneath it and it still fits perfectly through chest and shoulders, I'm a little curvier in the hips though and it is a little snug when I layer up so keep that in mind if your 39'' or larger through the hips. Update: May 27 2014 I worn this on a 4 day trip in the Adirondacks and ran into several rain showers, this jacket held up better than I expected, while some items in the chest pocket got pretty wet I stayed fairly dry. I got slightly damp but never felt uncomfortable because of it. The only downside to this jacket;no pit zips :(

Fantastic climbing jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been using this jacket for 3 months now and have hiked a moderate amount in it and climbed extensively in Joshua Tree and Smith Rock in it. I always find that OR's sizing is awkward, ie wide and short. For this jacket to fit me in the body I need a size small (other brands I am more typically a medium). The sleeves are a great length coming just past my wrists but the body is fairly short (falling at about my hipbones). At first I had doubts about the length but then after climbing in it this December and January, I realized that the length is great with a harness (at least for where I have my harness sit and how I like a jacket to fit with it).

The jacket has not been used gently at all; it has been scraped up cracks of all sizes, including off-widths and chimneys. It is holding up magnificently!

Hiking with this jacket is great as well. It breaths reasonably and repels a light drizzle for an hour or so. After that or with harder rain it will start to seep through (which is expected with a soft shell). I have been washing it with Techwash and find that helps the jacket to keep beading nicely.

I highly recommend this jacket if the fit works for you.

The cool techy softshell for the Ladies!

Gals, if you are tired of overheating in a hard shell, but still want great protection when you are out there, try this Encahinment Jacket. It is a super tightly woven soft shell material that blocks wind, sheds snow, and protects you from everything except the gnarliest downpours. The Schoeller fabric under the arms allows for dumping extra heat while allowing maximum movement. A favorite jacket in my outdoor quiver!

Can I treat this jacket with a waterproofing treatment? And if so, what product is recommended?

I've found the wash in type water proofing to either effect the breathability or not be water repellent enough. Never both just either. I"ve started using spray on style. Especially for a softshell where breathability is important.

Or MCNETT ReviveX Spray-On Water Repellent.
