Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Women's

The original do-it-all gaiter of mountaineers, backcountry skiers, and off-trail adventurers, the Outdoor Research Women's Crocodiles Gaiters are designed for ladies who handle anything. Designed specifically for women, these gaiters feature increased volume in the calf and a shorter overall length. The durable Taslan Gore-Tex® leg section, much like the Crocodile Gaiter's namesake, creates an impenetrable hide-like shield against snow, rocks and every hiker's bane, the thorny Devil's Club. The 1000d Cordura boot section, lined with burly, coated 8 oz. packcloth, resists the abuses dealt from ski edges, crampons and general wear. The water-resistant coating on the packcloth faces the Cordura layer, thereby protecting the coating from boot abrasion and insuring a much longer life for these gaiters. A 2in-wide hook-and-loop front closure offers enough range to accommodate leather and plastic boots as well as light or heavy insulating layers.

Bottom Line: Often imitated, never bettered, the Crocodile will give you confidence to hike through any conditions.

THE BEST!

By:

Absolutely Bomber! I climb the Colorado mountains and put these through the wringer. I have had a pair of these for 6 years, albeit the mens version since I don't think they made womens then. They are just now getting a little ragged and I have used them A LOT. They have withstood many close encounters with ice axes, trekking poles, snowshoe cleats and crampons...OR is the best!

The Standard for All Gaiters

By:
January 1, 2010

Doesn't get much better than these. Beefy, but still compact and sleek, these will never let anything through them. They are also a breeze to put on and adjust. Once you buy them, you will have them for 20 years. Don't buy cheap gaiters-these are a million times better.

Totally agree, there are some much cheaper gaiters on the market but you will be buying new ones in a year or two. These things are rock solid.

Warm and nice

By:
January 17, 2011

I have one pair and now my girl friend have one pair too. They will keep your feet hot and dry when the weather gets really bad. I use them for back country skiing in Northern Sweden where the temperature can be as low as -30°F or less and these gaiters will for sure keep your feet warm.

Will these gaiters protect against rattlesnake bites?? If not, what gaiters would you recommend?

Also, 'gummy boots' will not protect you against the 3/4" fangs that are on some LARGE rattlers. Vipers have longer fangs than other poisonous snakes.

Search Amazon with the term 'snake proof gaiters' if you want gaiters which will offer protection against rattlers. There definitely are some. I'm not sure what kind of jackass would think that people in the United States shouldn't be concerned about snakebites. My Mom killed a rattle snake on our property not too long ago, and my cousins see big ones all the time in the desert where they live. In one part of texas, people make decent livings by catching and selling rattlers. In Louisiana swamps, there are lots of moccassins, a snake that incidentally intimidated even Steve Irwin (may he rest in peace). Large vipers are definitely a very real threat in the United States. Anyone who doesn't think so is quite ignorant indeed.

No, they will not. No gaiter is going to protect you from a rattlesnake bite. If you're really concerned about snake bites, which you shouldn't be if you're in the US, just pay attention to where you're walking, they wear gummy boots in Costa Rica and Australia to avoid snake bites.

Fit is perfect!

By:
January 12, 2012

I love these gaiters. I tried on Black Diamond, Mountain Hardwear, REI and these fit me perfectly. They are bomber and I love things that are made well. I've worn them all winter for 2 seasons now and love them. (A little late on my review, but thought I should test them out first).

Great/Cute Gators

By:
October 28, 2008

I bought these for my wife! We are using these for a little snowshoeing. They seem great. No concern of tearing but they're reinforced just in case. They're plenty adjustable and seem to be a perfect addition to the keep it warm/dry arsenal. OR stuff has always worked very well for me and I expect the exact same from these! Plus they have the cuteness factor with a little flowering on the sides:)

This is a good question. The Crocodile Gaiters are not guaranteed to protect against snakes. Cabela's offers a few different pairs of gaiters designed to protect against snakes.

Thanks!

Are the Croc gaiters waterproof? Am wanting to use these for BC skiing and hiking. Hiking conditions range from spring/summer to wet to winter hiking in snow. Most backcountry time is spent in CO Rockies. Are the Verglas a better alternative -- their specs say waterproof.

These gators are fantastic! They're completely waterproof. My wife and I both have croc's and we hike in all four seasons in them. My wife has personally had her leg submerged up to about 3 or 4 inches below the top of the gator for about a minute and she was bone dry underneath. The only thing these don't hold up to are snags on crampons, but they repaired very easily.
Hope that helps.

Great Fit - Awesome Gaiters!!

By:
August 11, 2010

These gaiters are AWESOME! They've kept my feet dry in icy rain and snow and have withstood lots of pain from my crampons. I've been wearing the Men's Small and they're a little big - no complaints on functionality, but occasionally, my crampons snagged on the extra fabric and the gaiters would uncomfortably jam into the back of my knee from being too long. So I finally ordered the Women's version - and they fit GREAT!!

I couldn't find the differences in specs online, so here they are (in Small): the Women's are 1.5" shorter in height and 0.5" smaller in circumference around the calves. Both have the same circumference at the opening. I am short and small and wear a size 5.5 boot and have 13" calves around. With a base layer, fleece pants, softshell pants and my plastic boots, these are really nice and form fitting! I LOVE them and can't wait to try them out - besides the fit, everything else seems to be the exact same as the Men's including the toughness - fantastic!!

My only complaint is the silly flower on the side... Way too girly and not really my style :)

If you don't like the flower you can always get the mens. They fit me really well, and i'm pretty sure the sizing is the same. I wanted the flower and the store i got them at didnt have any in my size. :(

Excellent. + Question.

By:
April 3, 2010

I love these gaiters! I wore them for a couple weeks hiking in Costa Rica last summer. I didn't sweat very much under them, and they kept me dry in torrential downpour. :) I would highly recommend them. I am 5'2' with large calves (about 19") and they fit just fine, with some room to cinch more if I wanted to.

My question: are these recommended for protection against snakes? I will be traveling to Belize this summer for more off-the-trail type hiking and don't know if I should get more snake-proof gaiters, or if these will do.

No! They do not protect against snakes. If you're worried about snakes, buy a pair of the boots you see all the locals wearing for about $7 when you get there. They're rubber boots that look like wellies.

Medium is 15", Small is 14" and large is 16". Circumference opens to about 18" maximum and cinches very easily, stays cinched-very nice gaiters.

Bought these for my wife. She's been back country skiing in them twice and likes them a lot. They seem rather indestructible and she like the little feminine flower touch. Way better than my cheaper gaiters... I'm jealous!

I used these to climb Mt. Elbert in Colorado. Went through so rough terrain and these babies toughed it out. I really truly put them to use on that mountain. I own another pair of a different brand that made it only a year with my trekking and climbing. I am happy to know that the OR gaiters will last a long time. I knew they were pretty tough after what I put them through recently. Ahh, this is only the beginning of a long lasting relationship I believe...

My First Pair

By:
June 19, 2008

And probably my last considering how durable these things seem to be. I'm a newbie with crampons so I'm still constantly rubbing against the gaiters quite a bit, but I've not seen any evidence of wear yet. Easy on/off, but once they're on they're not going anywhere. Good fit for a very generalized product.

Not necessarily. If you are a medium shoe-sized person, a medium will probably fit fine, etc. However, for smaller/larger shoes, get a smaller/larger gaiter. For example, I wear a small gaiter with my running shoes (not this gaiter, a different Outdoor Research gaiter) and an XL with my big enormous plastic boots.

The Croc Gaiter

By: Backcountry.com Employee
June 29, 2006

This gaiter rocks! The croc gaiter stays up on your leg better than any other gaiter that I have used and doesn't shift around at all. They are easy to put on and stay there very securely. My only negative to this gaiter is that it doesn't do well in the hot temps, you tend to sweat a ton under them, they don't breathe extremely well. But for snow or moderate temps, this gaiter is unparalleled. I have never had it tear with a crampon on either.
