Description

Often imitated, never bettered, the Crocodile will give you the confidence to hike through any conditions.

Winner of Backpacker Magazine's 1999 Editor's Choice Gold Award, Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiters — the original do-it-all gaiter of mountaineers, backcountry skiers, and off-trail adventurers — are designed to handle anything. The durable Taslan Gore-Tex® leg section, much like the Crocodile Gaiter's namesake, creates an impenetrable hide-like shield against snow, rocks, and every hiker's bane, the thorny Devil's Club. The 1000d Cordura boot section, lined with burly, coated 8 oz. packcloth, resists the abuses dealt from ski edges, crampons and general wear. The water-resistant coating on the packcloth faces the Cordura layer, thereby protecting the coating from boot abrasion and insuring a much longer life for these gaiters. A 2in-wide hook-and-loop front closure offers enough range to accommodate leather and plastic boots as well as light or heavy insulating layers.

This is my second pair of Crocodiles. Quite simply, they do all they're supposed to do, and they do it well. They're waterproof, they don't sag, and they're extremely easy to put on and take off. What more do you need?!

These are great gaiters! Extremely rugged (have withstood the test of time with crampons) and full coverage. Some gaiters seem to skimp on the material and don't offer full coverage. You will not be disappointed with these. 5 stars.

I bought this for a planned hiking trip in New Zealand (Milford Trek) which spans 33 miles over 5 days. I have only tried this on, but I plan to use these with Smartwool NTS Lightweight bottoms, North Face Paramount Convertible Pants and also TNF Venture Side Zip Pants. I also picked up a pair of NEOS Trekker OverShoes while traversing through streams. I hiked the ?W? trail in Torres Del Paine, the last thing you want is for your feet to get wet ? gaiters won?t cut it, OverShoes will!

I used these for Search and Rescue in my local area, and it often includes black berry and thorn bush climbing. Whenever it comes to destroying the bushes or pushing through them, these gaiters have held to the test. They have held water, snow, and everything out, and I only have one complaint which would be that along the front, at the very bottom the little piece of Velcro the closes up the boot no longer sticks and occasionally it is difficult to put the hook on my laces. I would highly recommend these to anyone going into a muddy area, snowy area, or anywear where things might end up in your boots, like puddles or lakes. Best gaiters ever!

I bought these gaiters almost 7 years ago and they are still as good as new. The fabric on these things is as durable as they come. I have used them in almost every condition from rain, to snow, to simply keeping brush from cutting into me. After all the years, they are still as waterproof and breathable as ever. I'm guessing I will one day have to replace them and when I do, I'm grabbing another pair without question. You can't go wrong with these gaitors. Like a few other reviewers on this page, I must let you know that I belong to Mountaintechs and I get to test some Gore-tex and Windstopper products. However, I bought these gaitors long before I joined Mountaintechs.

Simply the best gaiters on the market. Love them!!
SIZING NOTE: I wear size 10 SCARPA hiking boot and ordered the suggested size large, but found there was too much play around the calfs and was a bit large around the boot. Also I'm 5'11" and weight 170 lbs, and my calfs are not very large. So I ordered the medium and they fit perfectly!!! Very happy customer!!

If you have even the slightest inclination to buy gaiters, you should just go ahead and click "Add to Cart" right now. OR's Croc's are the best. They have stayed up perfectly, breath great but also cinch down and can insulate when needed, keep mud, rain, snow, spilled oatmeal, anything you can think of out of your boots. If you are looking for gaiters, spend the extra $$ and get these.

I am super happy with these gaiters. I have taken them up Mt. Rainier and many other snowy summits, I've used them ice climbing, and I worn them with shorts on long summer hikes with brutal underbrush. In all conditions these gaiters have performed admirably. The material has stood up to the abuse of sharp thorny plants, misplaces crampon spikes, and (seemingly) endless miles of scree and talus. After all of that the rubberized strap is still keeping things tight, and the uppers still keep my ankles and calves protected and dry. I've seen friends' gaiters leak in water or fall down around their boots, but the OR Crocs have never failed me! I do some product testing and reviews for Gore-Tex, but I got these gaiters long before I started with that project.

they roll up small enough that you can pack them and not worry about extra bulk. they take a lot of abuse and remain waterproof. great construction. easy on and off. what more can i say. they do their job perfectly. i wore them over some mid top hikers last season and stayed dry in deep snow. perfect. Used them daily at work as well as for fun. enjoy. As a disclaimer, I am affiliated with Gore for product testing of Gore-tex products for the purpose of product review and recommendation. I do receive items from Gore for these purposes.

I have had these gaiters for over 8 years and they are still going strong. The boot section is made of a significantly sturdy cordura fabric which has withstood countless assaults from the steel edges of my back country telemark skis. The upper is made of pretty sturdy Gore-tex fabric which breathes very well. The top closure is easy to use, the hook and loop velcro seals up the front and the metal hook at the bottom seals the gaitor to the boot positively. I have used these gaitors with my leather tele boots and my much beefier plastic tele boot. You can't go wrong with these gaitors. I must let you know that I belong to Mountaintechs and I get to test Gore-tex and Windstopper products. I acquired these gaitors many years before I joined Mountaintechs.

I want to order these gaiters but I am not sure whether to get a large or whether I need an XL. I wear size 12 Salewa Raven Combis currently, and I will usually be wearing them with softshell pants or a pair of Ground Outerwear Glissade pants (lightweight uninsulated mountaineering shell pants). I would like to fit the gaiters tighter but I am not sure whether I can fit into a large. If I can, I would prefer it. Thanks!

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any experience climbing the cascades mountains or 14ers in these gaiters? I'm a bit worried as to whether picking up a black pair will cause my legs to overheat when the sun is bearing down on us during ascent/descent. (The same reason I picked up a light colored pants instead of black ones)

Thanks!

I have blue ones that have been up a few 14ers. If you're hiking in heat and sun, they'll get hot no matter what color they are. In cold air, they breath enough that you'll be fine. If you're worried about black, why not get a different color?

Working in the Everglades a few days per...

Working in the Everglades a few days per week, hiking (w/ 20 lb. pack) through sawgrass (Cladium) and 6 inches of water on mud trails that are either peat-based or marl (eroded limestone clay), with consistency between loose oatmeal and slick peanut-butter. Crotch deep mud holes are unavoidable and bad enough if you are 6' 4" (1.9m) tall. Throw in occasional holes that are belt deep, and hip waders aren't an option. Chest waders are hot and overkill for 99% of the day. The sawgrass is abrading my pants away and the mud is ruining my the interiors of my leather boots and my socks. These Crocodile gaiters look promising for the thicker mud and muck, and cooler than rubber or neoprene waders. best of all, gaiters are easier to fit with my size 15 EEEE feet, as most pull-on boots will not allow my high-insteps to pass (I wear boots that lace up, instead of pull-ons). But I spend enough time in muddy water, that fine mud will still soak through to the socks, right? Suggestions welcome.

My best experience with the Crocs was traipsing up the Escalante River after a cattle drive. The water was completely clouded with silt from the cows marching through. Until I stepped in water over the top of the gaiter, my feet stayed completely dry and silt-free. I expect you'll have the same experience in the FL mud. Once the muck/water rises over the top of the gaiters, there really isn't much you can do.

Size 11 boots. Wearing these in the warm seasons with lighter pants, AND winter with heavier pants, is the L or the XL better choice?

Unless you have huge calves, go with a Large. They are cut kinda big anyway.

I’ll preface this review with my cut and paste statement that I work as a backcountry backpacking guide in Yosemite National Park. Nearly all of the products I take the time to review have seen at least a half a season, if not more, of use... and I’m committed to not bothering to write a review until I feel like I’ve really gotten to know a product. I never thought I’d bother to write reviews, but I’ve recently decided that since I’ve spent so much time over these last many years reading reviews, and finding a tremendous amount of value in articulate and well-informed opinions, that I wanted to give back to the community. So, with that being said, here we go...

I've put some miles on these gaiters, and am very, very happy with them. They offer fantastic protection, and as gaiters go, are the nicest I've found. Even aside from the basic water/snow protection that they offer, they add quite a bit of warmth for your calves, so they function as a decent layer, making them quite multi-functional... which is always something I'm looking for in my backpacking gear. Also, beyond the layering aspect, they are great for bushwhacking through manzanita, poison oak, or any other off trail adventure that involves getting your legs jacked up.

My only single complaint, which knocks them down to four stars, is that a week ago I had one of the buckles break in half in the middle of a trip to Lassen. Turns out the buckles are plastic. Now, I don't mind plastic, its great and all... but I expected more from the buckles on these. It most certainly wasn't the result of abuse, I just looked down and, lo and behold, as I'm about to remove them upon reaching camp the broken half of one of the buckles is dangling from the strap at the top of the gaiter.

Other than the buckle durability/design issue these are as good as gaiters get, and could possibly last you a decade or more with some care.

I'm looking for a do-it-all gaiter, IE: 4 season. I know these are great for alpine/winter. Will they be to hot for summer wear? I assume yes, But for a guy on a small budget.. what do you think?

This should work very well for 4 season. It is very solidly made and doesn't have insulation, which would make it too warm for summer. I say go for it.

I use my Croc's in the summer and don't really notice a "heat" issue on my lower calves... I also use these year-round and they are pretty phenomenal, whether it is snow, morning dew, or keeping sand and stickers out of my boots.

I've used these gaiters year round and have always been impressed with their comfort in a wide variation of temperatures. I work in Yosemite, and had to use them from time to time during last years freakish spring/summer since there was so much snow in the park that we were traveling through several feet of snow in May and June. We'd leave the snow behind, get back on trail, and even in the 70s or 80s I wasn't too hot. So, my two cents is that they're perfect for you.

Will it keep my legs dry while crossing streams ??

You'll want to grab a pair of XL gaiters.

They will keep your feet dry to a point. I used a pair with some La Sportiva Makalus. Walking in the Escalante River (not crossing - actually walking in) they kept my feet dry until the water rose over the top of the gaiters.

Much better fit than MH gaiters. The top strap needs to be a little more durable maybe a metal buckle instead of plastic. Rest of the gaiter is totally bomber.
