Just had the opportunity to test this 'true' windshirt out on Red Rocks during several windy and cold days. Outstanding mobility, protection and durability. Huge fan of OR to begin with, but just another example of them going the extra mile here. Was impressed how little it snagged on approach and how well it protected against the harsh winds, yet was so supple on a technical route. Cheers.
Well the American obesity thing continues to affect my shoe size, pant size and shirt size. I guess I am shrinking! Anyway, OR is still making the best tech alpine climbing shirt in the biz, but the sizes have grown. At 150lbs, I am clearly a small now. Even considering it goes over another shirt as a pull over. Backcountry.com is now offering a new color compared to everybody only having black for the longest time, which of course sucks on sun baked routes. I would not buy a black climbing shirt. The whole idea of this product is you can't get too hot in it (unless it is black), as it protects you from the wind or light rain.
Had a chance to test this recently. Does exactly what it was designed to do. It effectively blocks the wind. Love the side zip and the deep front zip. The Cordura/Lycra material is outstanding. Highly abrasion resistant and feels much softer than anticipated. Not a great amount of stretch but every bit helps.
I would say these run only slightly bigger than they are sized. I tested a size Medium. At 5'10 and 185 lbs I was pushing the limits for that size. I didn't have much room for anything other than a baselayer (medium weight) underneath it but still didn't feel too restricted.
Liked this piece so much that I ordered a second one in a Large for more layering versatility on cooler days. I own a lot of different jackets and wind shirts and consider this to be one of the best purchases I've made.
If you're looking for a lightweight, tough fabric, wind blocking piece then you should definitely consider the OR Contour Windshirt.
I wore this shirts backpacking thru the Eagle Cap wilderness. The best thing about it was that the unrelenting mosquitoes couldn't get me. This made others in my group very jealous. I strongly recommend this shirt.
This shirt was much lighter than I expected it to be for a soft shell. I was impressed that it was unobtrusive when I was wearing it. I could focus on the activity at hand and not notice I was wearing a windshirt over another shirt.
The zips on both sides were a nice touch. When you get into some tight spots the last thing you want is your shirt bunching up. The top zipper having some protection is a nice bonus; just that little bit more comfortable - no neck skin on zipper contact.
It is not as stretchy as some 'stretchy' shirts but it has a nice tough give to it. I would certainly recommend this shirt as a light wind stopper.
Like the other reviews for this piece, I have the same praise for it. This is a great piece to add to your quiver. I have found myself using the Contour Windshirt in a number of conditions in the outdoors : wind, light rain, protection against bugs, cooler temps, and so on. I am 5'10, 138 lbs, and a Medium fits perfect, especially to layer under without losing the nice fit this garment has. If you don't want to pack a sweater for you next trip, take this. Very versatile, really it has all that you need and nothing that you don't. All in all a great item from Outdoor Research.
