    A Tempest with multi-sport versatility.

Osprey designed its lightweight Tempest 40 Backpack specifically for women so you can spend a night out in the woods or thru-hike in the desert for a weekend in complete comfort. The designers at Osprey molded the Airscape back panel and the lightweight aluminum frame somewhat like a chimney to ventilate any excess heat so your back isn't a sweaty mess when you reach your campsite. Biostretch covers the shoulder straps and waist-belt for maximum comfort and breathability while you hike, and the ErgoPull tabs cinch across your waist for an ideal fit. If you pack light, this top-loader can fit all the supplies you need for a full weekend out on the trail, and you can remove the top lid for quick day hikes while you're out there.

The Tempest 40 has a lower zippered compartment for easy access to your sleeping bag, and it has straps for your sleeping pad. It's external hydration sleeve is easy to refill, side stretch pockets can fit extra water or some snacks for the trip, two zippered pockets at the waist-belt hold any small items you might need on the trail like lip balm or sunscreen, and one front mesh pocket stores your map, a book, or a last-minute item. The shoulder straps have Stow-On-The-Go attachments for your trekking poles when the trail is nice and flat, and lower InsideOut straps compress the pack down quickly and simply. This pack even has two ice tool attachment loops with bungee tie-offs so you can continue using it throughout the year.

    The best backpack

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This was one of the best purchases I have ever made. I have taken this bag all over the world and it has never failed me. It is perfect for a day hike or even an overnight backpacking trip (if you pack light!) The pack is really comfortable and does a great job evenly distributing the weight. It has nice features like an outside pouch for stashing layers, and zipper hip pockets to keep a chapstick or snack. Also, you can't beat Ospreys warranty!

    First Pack and am Obsessed!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I did a lot of research on what size pack I wanted to get for my first pack. I knew I was going to go with Osprey because of their fail-proof warranty policy.

The fit of this pack is super lightweight on my back. I can barely feel it. I think my torso length is 22" but my waist is 26" so i went with the small. It feels great when on and tightened but I think on my next pack I'll go withe the M/L so it sits a little closer to my hips.

This pack was perfect on an overnight trip I took in the Uinta's, but with all of the extra packs, the detachable day pack, extra hip and side pockets I used my pack on an 11 day stay in Maui. I took it on an over night trip in HANA while there. I had it hanging in a tree during a 7 hr rainstorm and all of my items inside the pack stayed dry ( I however did not! :) ) The sipper on the bottom of the pack came in very handy in the airport. I brought back sand, that needed to be tested to fly back to the mainland. Rather than having to dismantle all of the contents of my pack, we simply pulled the jar out of the bottom of the pack - tested it, put it back in and zipped the pack back up, extremely convenient!

It would be tough to do a 3-5+ day trip in this with the size, but I love that I can attach my Yoga mat to the bottom for my morning practice.

    Love it!

    * My wife writing * This is the best backpack I have ever had ( after the last two). I wanted something lightweight and small for our upcoming backpacking trip - and I was tentative about buying a 40 liter pack after using a 65. I kept asking myself "will it fit all my winter gear?"

But as it turns out, even a 40 liter Osprey can fit:
    1 lightweight winter sleeping bag,
1 very small sleeping pad (mine is the size of a nalgene bottle)
1 camera insert with DSLR and two lenses and filter set
    1 pants and 1 baselayer
    2 tops
    1 winter jacket
As well as a bunch of smaller camping items and camera things!!!

I have used the pack five or so times now on day hikes, to get used to it, and it is pretty amazing. Sometimes I forget I am even wearing a pack, because it molds to my bod, and the weight is evenly distributed. I could not be happier with my decision! If there are any downsides, I would say that the pack could use some ties along the front, to hold extraneous items, but overall it is great!

    Great backpack

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this one for my girlfriend as a bithday gift. She loves it. The color is bright and the design is beautiful. It is an amazing backpack. Just the right size to fit everything you would need to travel for 1-2 weeks, and be able to use as a carry on when flying. Very high utility for the price paid. Highly recommend it.

    I'm in love

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I absolutely love this back. I've only used it once on a recent canyoneering trip to hold all my gear and wet-suit.

    Pros:
-The side and front pockets are made of a great stretchy material.
-The pack is very minimal and lightweight.
    - I love that the hip straps aren't overly bulky like a lot of similar packs.
-It has all the necessary features for a pack its size and not much else.
    -Beautiful green color

    Cons:
    -None!

Great for day or overnight pack

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this pack for a 3 day hiking trip to Havasupai. I've only used it for day hikes so far, but I love it. The hip straps are my favorite feature so far because they really help to distribute the weight better. I found the side and outside pockets to be sufficient for space and ease of accessing things. The main compartment of the pack doesn't have any compartments, but the extra zippers in the removable lid are really handy. The quality and design of this pack are impressive with how light weight it is, yet it still feels sturdy and like it is going to withstand a lot of use. I am 5'1", 105 lbs and the xs/s fits comfortably in both the hip and chest straps. So far, I love it!

what is the height of the frame with the lid pushed down? For size S/M. Some airlines set the maximum length(=longest side) of the carry-on baggage to 55cm.

Hey Vera - Most carry-on luggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 114 cm) in combined length and the Tempest 40 is 46 linear inches (26 x 10 x 10 in). I have used larger packs than this as my carry-on so it should work for you. Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.

Any idea what the waist and chest measurements go to?

REALLY small! The hip belt is really pared down. I am about 24-25" waist, maybe a couple inches larger over the pelvis where the pack sits, and there are inches to go. My chest is 31 inch, and I get a snug fit without maxing out the sternum strap. I am 5'5'' and 108 lbs. I have about a 30.5 inseam and my torso measurement is between sizes as are the packs when I try them on :( I can relate to the problem that you are talking about but not on this pack, straps are pared down to save weight. Good luck. There isn't a lot of padding over a prominent iliac crest, so if you are bony, consider the deuter ACT SL series. Yes, it's heavier but the size range and features are the same. Greater adjustability and more cush in the hip belt.

Not a lot of padding in the straps if you have bony clavicles...another consideration for the lean. I don't use this pack for more than about 20 lbs MAX. Think Deuter ACT SL above that -- I suspect this is the easiest pack to fit anyone. Here's the Osprey Tempest on the Trail -- as you can see if you zoom in, there are several inches to go!
