Whether you’re on a backwoods trail, ten four pitches up a granite cliff, or running through the hills, the Osprey Talon 5.5 Backpack stores your essentials with functional comfort. A hydration slot stashes your reservoir for on-the-go watering, and the stretchy front pocket holds a jacket or energy bars. A top handle loop lets you clip the pack to an anchor at the belay, and the blinker patch holds your light on the bike ride home.

Bottom Line: Load up the essentials and get after it.

Light and good amount of space

By:
May 30, 2010

I have used this pack on a couple mountain bike rides now,and because of the packs lightweight out of the box,it made what I was carrying feel lighter and more comfortable to manage....

At 5.5 liters there was a suprisingly good amount of space.

What I carried- wallet, keys, cell phone, two jackets, one extra shirt, bike gloves, small bike pump, tube, bike repair kit, couple bars and gels. And still a bit of room left.If needed put your jackets in the outside patch.

Enjoy a great little pack.

Osprey 5.5

By:
January 23, 2011

Considerably smaller than I expected although it does fit. It hugs pretty close to torso. No sagging at all. Good for a scramble or just a healthy walk with minimal supplies. Somehow not quite what I expected from Osprey. Some items seem well thought out. Unfortunately you never know what something is like until you get a physical response or input from it. My sole suggestion is to find it somewhere and try it on before ordering.

does this item come with a bladder?

Agree with Steve. Old question but Osprey now manufactures multiple packs that do include the bladder.

Unfortunately, it does not. Osprey's website doesn't specify what size bladder will fit, but it looks like it would hold up to a 3L bladder (and it is only a 5.5L pack overall, so that might be taking up the majority of the space).

I looked on the Osprey website. It gave the dimensions as 18X8X3. Not sure if that's the S/M or M/L

Holds much more than you'd think!

By:

I bought this pack to take with me on a trip to Moab, UT. I used it for mountain biking and hiking. This bag turned out to be perfect--exactly what I've been searching for. This pack holds much more than what some of the reviews led me to believe. I carried the following items inside the bag while mountain bikine: (2) .5L water bottles, Patagonia Houdini jacket, North Face baselayer bottoms, Spot personal locator, a sandwich, apple, energy bar, camera, first aid kit, wallet, keys, cell phone, and lip balm. I could have easily fit a couple more small items if needed. The pack was the most comfortable pack I've ever worn.

Great pack - apart from the chaffing...

By:
July 30, 2010

This pack is perfect - fits a ton for its size and stays put. I use it primarily for running to work, so it carries a change of clothes and shoes, minimal toiletries, a wallet, phone, keys, gels and sunglasses - all with a full, 1 L Platypus Hoser hydration bladder.

As mentioned, the bottom of frame is stiff and causes some serious chaffing. I wonder if it's a sizing issue (I'm 5'2" and use the S/M), but I'm finding ways to minimize the chaffing... Despite this problem, I would highly recommend the pack.

A little stiff

By:
May 15, 2010

Overall, this is a decent pack but not as comfortable as I was hoping. Maybe it just needs some more break-in time. It seems that the frame sheet, if thats what it's called, is really stiff especially at the bottom where the waist strap is attached. I wore this on a 30 mile training run and it was rubbing against the lower part of my back. So you either have to over- tighten the waist strap to minimize this rubbing however;the waist belt is then to tight, at least for me it was.

On the upside,it has just the right amount of storage for long runs and the bladder is easy to get to for re-filling. Shoulder straps seem comfortable and the stretch mesh pockets hold gels, electrolyte capsules or small energy bars well.

If Osprey can improve or make the framesheet more flexible this would be a great pack.

As mentioned, though, my only complaint about this pack is the stiffness of the frame. I too have experienced some serious chaffing and wonder if it's a sizing issue (I'm 5'2" and use the S/M), but I'm finding ways to minimize the chaffing... Despite this problem, I would highly recommend the pack. I bought another, larger Osprey Talon pack several months ago and am hooked on the brand and the series.
