Description

Stow to go in no time.

The Osprey Porter 46 Backpack blurs the line between backpack and luggage. The high-tech suspension system quickly zips and stows away when it's time to get on the plane so it's out of the way. Then, when it's time to hike from the airport to the hostel BLAM it comes out and it's ready to go.

  • Zip-away shoulder harness with fully adjustable sternum strap and rescue whistle buckle
  • Tuck-away fabric waistbelt stows away easily for getting on a plane
  • Foam padded sidewalls help the bag keep its shape when not full and protect contents
  • Straight Jacket compression secures your load for efficient carry
  • Padded carry handles for added comfort
  • Low profile low grab handle makes it easy to snag from the baggage carousel
  • Large main panel zip for easy access to contents
  • Zippered top pocket for easy access to essentials like toiletries
  • Internal zip pocket on front panel provides security for valuables

great carryon

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Got this for a carryon for air travel and possibly for some light (hostel to hostel) backpacking.

It's currently sitting next to me at the gate for our first adventure together, and I have some initial impressions:

Positives: Great construction, great look, great function. I would expect nothing less from Osprey, they've really dedicated R&D to creating comfortable, functional packs. The 2 handles are plushly cushioned, and the shoulder/hip straps are very durable and comfortable (and zip away neatly). The entire bag feels very substantial, I'm sure it will take a beating. I also like how it fits at the maximum dimensions for carry-on travel for all airlines, even Ryan Air with their stringent carry-on restrictions (I might have to cinch it down a little, but that's what the clips are for in the first place!). Also, the pack looks great.

Negatives:
Not enough pockets. One external pocket that's about the size of an iPad mini and one mesh pocket built into the main flap? Woof! I'd like to see some more external pockets for organizing and getting to my stuff without having to rifle through the entire main compartment to find it.

Overall: I foresee this pack being very versatile and useful, probably the best carryon-sized pack Backcontry has. After trying a couple other packs I'm glad I settled on this one!

Great Pack!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Used this as my luggage on a two week trip to Europe where I was catching trains, planes, and doing lots of walking. The shoulder straps were great to have, and include good padding, but they are by no means meant for long-haul backpacking. The structure/rigidity of the side panels offer both great protection and allowed for organized packing. When combined with any kind of packing cube this seems to be able to fit anything i threw at it. Slight annoyance was the length of the compression straps on the front, they were just a bit too long and flapped around a lot. However, the compression system worked great when getting ready to board a plane and needing to condense it to fit in the overhead compartment.

Awesome travel pack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got this bag because I hate checking luggage when I don't have to. It fits perfectly into an overhead bin while still holding a lot of stuff. I took this to Europe for a week and a half and had enough room for everything I needed. In addition to the large main compartment the smaller compartments are well thought out and hold smaller separate items well and keep them easily accessible.

Awesome travel pack

I love this bag

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I use this bag for everything. Its is surprisingly large and you can fit a ton of stuff in it. The features of the bag make travel easy. The backpack straps that hide away and comfortable carrying handles make it so you can fill this thing up and it still isn't a chore lugging it around. . Zippers and zipper pulls are super high quality and have no trouble zipping even when the contents of the bag are bulging . I use the eagle creek pack-it series items with it and it is perfect. I easily fit everything needed for a 7 day trip into the bag.

Is it possible to combine this Porter 46...

Is it possible to combine this Porter 46 pack with the daypack from Farpoint 55? Will it fit under the compression straps? Will it attach onto the front of the shoulder straps as it does on the Farpoint?
Thanks

Responded on

If you are crafty you could probably make it work, but the systems really are not made to work together. In all honesty the Porter and the Farpoint daypack are almost the same size. Measuring in at 19 x 11.5 x 7 the daypack measures in only a couple inches less than the Porter itself and even if you you do manage to get the two packs together most of the effective space of the daypack would be limited.

Best Travel Pack Around!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this pack last minute for a two week trip to Europe and couldn't have been more happy! This pack supported a large load filled with clothes and other travel necessities. The best part of this pack was that I was able to take it as a carry on bag, which is how I like to travel in the first place. So many places to store items on this pack, whether it be the front or on the inside in one of the side compartments. I will definitely be picking up more for my family for extended trips. Overall, this is a great travel pack from Osprey.

Perfect Travel Pack

I've used this going Cross country on airplanes and in my car on multiple occasions and it is perfect. Always able to check it and fits everything I need with no issues. Combine it with a day back and your set for a week! Cinches down if you need it smaller and very easy to throw across your back or carry in a single hand. If your traveling you won't regret getting this!

Good Looking Backpack

I intend to use this pack soon, this pack looks solid in construction, plenty of room for its size and price. I wonder if this is water resistant, I know its not waterproof, I'm going to find out soon.I wish Osprey makes this pack in several sizes in the 50 liter range.Highly Recommended !

Perfect size if you know how to travel light and want to only have one pack.
I also had a Black Diamond Bbee pack inside for a day pack. Layed flat it took up virtually no room. Super durable, comfortable, best travel pack yet.

Hey Nick, which Black Diamond Bbee daypack did you use? Thanks for the great review.

Fantastic travel pack!

Just returned from 12 days on the road through West Indies/Guyana's. Six countries - moving almost every day. The Osprey Porter 46 was absolutely the perfect pack. Brillant design features. Durable. Comfortable. More than enough room. Best travel pack I have ever owned. May not be the best for camping but for road trips you would be hard pressed to find anything better. Great value for the money.
