Owned this bag for almost six months now and love it. 5'2" tall. 157lbs female (didn't realize I bought the man's pack) but love it all the same. Chose this pack originally due to largest capacity. Always in the mindset of being prepared (especially as a solo female hiker) I love that this pack carries my myriad of essentials and I love the 3ltr bag. Decided to finally write a review after I hosed it down today after an awesomely muddy hike and discovered it was a breeze to clean.

Excellent choice

This Osprey Manta 36 hydration pack is the nicest product I have found. I have a friend that has the same pack and he likes it so much that I had to get one and I like mine very much also. Although the construction is first rate it is much lighter than my old pack and the hydration unit is first rate. Very comfortable to wear and the ventilation between the pack and your back makes this pack a joy to use. Perfect for day hikes. I also wear it on my adventure motorcycle when I do not want to install the side cases.

I am trying to determine whether i should buy the S/M or the M/L. I cannot find this pack in any stores so i can not try out the different sizes. I am about 5'9" and weigh about 155. Which would you recommend?
Thanks!

How thick is the padding on the waist belt and shoulder straps ?
Is the waist belt really load bearing or mainly stabilizing against sway.

Responded on

It's load bearing, but you're not likely to have more than about 35 pounds in a pack like this.

Awesome bag

I bought this bag for day to day commutes and to take on day hikes. I wear it around the city with about 15 pounds of stuff (books, laptop, etc). I love the weight distribution with this bag, and i hardly feel it on my shoulders. Its got pretty good storage space, and it collapses pretty small so it could probably be used only as a hydration unit if you scrunch it all down. I have done some hiking (nothing too long), the bag performed as i expected and was comfortable the whole time and the hydration system works fine too. Only complaint (minor one) is the waist strap, near the clasp the strap is pretty thin so a little less comfortable (in that area alone) than other other bags i have used. Again only taking about the waist strap, the bag as a whole is awesome one of the best i've had.

nice backpack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

easy to use and well thought out bag. the pack stays off your back and keeps you cool while distributing weight well. room inside of the main compartment is minimal due to the shape of the water bag. that is the only downside. the hydration system is nice and the magnet is a beautiful touch. the pockets are good sizes and in the right spots. good size medium backpack. i would buy it again

Great multi-sport daypack

This is an awesome choice if you're looking for a versatile day pack. The compression straps are designed really well, so the pack is very comfortable with both small and large loads - no more issues with gear sloshing around if your pack is only half full. I've used this pack with little more than the hydration bladder and stuffed to the brim and it's always comfy. If you're debating between sizes, I wouldn't hesitate to go for this pack again - you get the added versatility of more storage space for the shoulder seasons/ longer days while still being able to cinch things down when you have an empty pack.

This pack is a great size for mountain biking since it isn't so tall that it will hit you in the back of the head/ neck. The suspension/ back panel is great for hot summer days as the body of the pack curves outwards from your back leaving an open space for air flow. Even with the pack fully loaded, there is still plenty of air in the back panel to keep things cool.

Perfect for day hikes and biking!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love using this backpack for my everyday bike ride to school and for various trips around town. It's just big enough to fit everything I may need( water, food books, laptop, pens, etc.) The water reservoir is a nice addition to this pack and really comes in handy when biking because it's almost hands free. The rain cover is another swell addition to the pack just incase of in climate weather. The ventilation system for your back is remarkable and truly makes a difference in the summer when back sweat becomes annoying. Overall this is a great buy If you are looking for a versatile medium sized backpack.
