I received my backpack last week and i was just amazed by the amount of stuff that can fit inside. I put everything i had in my closet into the pack and it all fit (Mainly shorts and tee shirts). I also had some room to put my Ipad in also. After i was done putting everything inside i thought it would be too heavy to carry.I then tried it on, it turned out that it was actually really light and my shoulders had no pain because of the shoulder straps and waist belt.
This backpack is highly recommended....
Amazing.

This pack is absolutely amazing. I literally have no bad things to say about it. It holds everything that I need for a couple days hike. I use it mainly for overnight and 2 day hikes. It sits very well and I would recommend this to everyone. I also recommend getting it baked and molded to you, it just made it that much more comfortable.

my question is; i stand 5'11" and weigh in around 170 depending on the season. Should I go for a med/lrg?

i'm 181 cm (about 6 feet) and weigh 165 lbs and have an M/L, it fits great so i would guess that M/L would fit you pretty good as well.
Great pack by the way!

Love all the pockets and that it comes with a rain cover.

The bag doesn't have a separate compartment for a sleeping bag, it just has a bottom access to the main compartment. Yes, it does have the adjustable platform like you mentioned. It really is a great pack.
Awesome Pack

A fantastic fitting pack big enough for overnighters and long day journeys. Just small enough when moderately full to carry-on planes. Wears like a stone. Can't beat warranty!

I do not know about the BearVault 450, but a Backpackers' Cache Bear Can fits in sideways. I believe the BearVault is smaller, so it should fit.

Could this be used as a carry on? My brother has the Porter 46 and I know it's perfect as a carry on, but I'd like something that functions well for both travel and outdoor adventures.

In my experience, it depends on the airline and/or airport. I have a 42L pack that I have been allowed to carry on in some cases and in some cases they made me check it.

It would depend on how full you have it packed. I flew with mine recently and had it packed with my 15" MacBook, a couple changes of clothes, a pair of sneakers, a few books, a couple notebooks, toiletries, a water bottle, and a few other small items. I had to put it in the overhead compartment because it did not fit under the seat, but they did let me take it as a carry on.
I think you will be happy with this pack both as a travel bag and a backpacking bag. The different pockets make it easy to stay organized while traveling. When backpacking, I am able to fit everything I need for multi day trips including a tent and bear can. I have an older model (2008 maybe), and the 2012 model looks even better.

I'm trying to figure out which size I would need. I'm 6'2", pretty skinny (150 lbs).

I'd bank that you're a M/L torso, but I am worried that your waist is too small and you won't be able to properly tighten the hipbelt enough.
Here is the sizing info for the Kestrel Series.
Torso Length Hip Measurement Pack Size
> 19" / 48.5cm > 32" / 81cm M/L
< 19" / 48.5cm < 32" / 81cm S/M
If that is indeed the case, consider looking into the Atmos 50L--$30 more, but you'll get a pack with better torso sizing AND adjustable hipbelt. The $30 will be money well spent if the pack fits better...

I can't find anything about this pack that I don't like and appreciate. I have backpacks by Marmot, Mountain Hardware and Millet. In Osprey I have an Argon 85, Atmos 65 and this Kestrel 48. One thing I've grown to appreciate about Osprey is the build quality and attention to detail. The Kestrel 48 is the perfect over night pack, although you'll be pushing space limits if you're overnight is in the winter. I don't like to strap a bunch of gear to the outside of my pack so to me, this is a 3 season overnighter. The Kestrel is really versatile and would even do ok as a technical pack. There are two side pockets that would handle crampons and skins and there are proper straps for hauling your boards in an a frame or straight up. There's no dedicated space for avalanche gear or helmet but that's a small price to pay in a pack that is loaded with so many creature comforts and organizational pockets for straight up back packing. The external hydration sleeve is very nice. No more rummaging through your gear to access the H2O. Plenty of compression straps on the side make it easy to secure smaller loads. The sleeping bag compartment is nice as is the rain cover. A 48 liter pack is a versatile size that will get lots of use and this is the perfect example. Flawless.

I can't say much about other packs, but I own the Atmos 50, Kestrel 48 and two hydration packs... I love each of them. Osprey really engineers the design detail, quality and materials into a really pleasing final product. They are exciting in that they offer so much in features. I do however, think they could further describe their ideas behind the features so I don't have to come upon the purposes for some features on my own or from other people. Feature your features folks, in the brochures that come with the product.
Best pack. No questions

I absolutely love this pack. Loaded it up with all my essential gear with room to spare. Excellent internal frame design and support system. A ton of pockets for everything you would possibly need on a 3-4 day hike, if you pack light. The straps on the bottom I use to haul my 2 person tent. Includes an integrated rain cover, so you don't have to worry about your stuff getting wet. Osprey packs are a must have for any camper/hiker/backpacker, just make sure you go get yourself sized at a local store to be sure what size you need.
