Description

Hydration in the bottle, food in the pocket.

To fully comprehend the power of Osmo Active Hydration, we need to dispel the haze surrounding the current hydration ideology. Essentially, you'll find that most sports hydration mixes feature a high carbohydrate level, with the prevailing intention of having you drink your calories during exercise. However, as Osmo's peer-reviewed and empirically-proven testing shows, this is not only incorrect and ineffective, but it's actually minimizing your power output and effectively dehydrating you. This assertion cuts right to the core of Osmo's founding hypothesis and namesake -- the importance of osmolality and the types of sugars that're used in beverages.

So, what is osmolality? Basically, it's the amount of solutes within a solution, and for the purposes of hydration, we view the blood plasma and the drink itself as solutions. Blood's osmolality sits around 280 to 295 mOsm, while Active Hydration is around 265-270 mOsm. Now, let's get into why this important. Osmo works by looking at how actual physiology works. Around 95% of water absorption occurs at the small intestines. And what facilitates this absorption into the body is a combination of sodium, glucose, and sucrose -- all in small amounts. combining specific sugars and sodiums with water in order to accelerate fluid absorption. But, whereas most industry mixes maintain too high a ratio of sugars to sodium, effectively slowing down absorption, Osmo's proprietary ratio actually accelerates fluid absorption with the three components maintaining a 3.2% solution. Through extensive research, Osmo discovered that fluids that have an osmolality greater than 290 mOsm, and are comprised of fructose, maltodextrin, and sucrose, create a solution that actually inhibits water absorption and hydration potential. As a result of this optimal range, Active Hydration removes the common, unwanted side effects found in typical hydration mixes. That's right, we're talking about the sloshing, bloating, and other gastrointestinal distresses that arise from not being able to properly absorb fluid.

Now, if you feel like your current hydration mix is effective, we're going to drop some knowledge on you. The body works on a system of checks and balances, with one of the most vital being the fluctuation of body temperature. This shift in temperature is the result of the heat output from working muscles, and to keep you from boiling from the inside out, the body regulates your core temperature by moving blood plasma to the skin. From there, heat is offloaded through the process of vasodilation (the dilation of blood vessels that decreases blood pressure) and evaporative cooling -- better known as sweating. Now, while this preventative system is highly effective, it's completely dependent on your ability to continually replenish the body with the water needed for plasma volume and perspiration. This should be putting the aforementioned in perspective. When your mix's osmolality is blocking water absorption, your body starts to shut down on itself and overheat. And not surprisingly, many blame this feeling of 'bonking' on a lack of caloric intake instead of properly placing the blame on dehydration. This where the founding Osmo ethos reigns true -- you're not bonking, you're dehydrated.

Interestingly enough, many don't recognize the effects of dehydration, and this is due to a problematic side effect called cardiac drift. This is where the heart rate remains high, but power output drops off dramatically. So, if you're only in-tune with your HRM readings, you'll feel a natural level of exertion while your power is actually decreasing. By optimizing fluid intake and hydration, the Active Hydration formula increases thermo-regulation of your core temperature, reduces cramping, and actually increases your power output. We understand that this sounds too good to be true, so we'll provide an explanation on how this occurs.

We mentioned earlier the importance of Active's sugar-to-sodium ratio and how it works with the body's natural physiology in order to maximize water absorption. However, what we didn't say is how difficult this was to achieve. Osmo was forced to be highly selective in its ingredients, and accordingly, its sugar value is the result of a proprietary ratio of glucose to sucrose. Additionally, Active makes use of sodium citrate over plain ol' salt. Sodium citrate does two things. First, the sodium works with water in order to enhance water absorption. Secondly, the citrate works in aerobic metabolism to keep the krebs cycling bolstered while its total sodium level also balances Active's electrolyte profile -- a vital component commonly depleted through sweating. Through this balance, Active staves off cramping and promotes cellular respiration, or aerobic metabolism. So, with extra circulating citrate, there's more essential substance available for enzyme activity, and thus, there's a greater cofactor available to keep aerobic metabolism high and effective. This means that your cells are uninhibited in their ability to convert nutrients into biochemical energy, and eventually, release them into waste.

As a result, the body functions in harmony and your core temperature is regulated. This is of the highest importance in regards to race results. You see, once your body temperature rises above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, the body's systems start to become compromised. Accordingly, once you get your first inkling of thirst, you're already experiencing a 2% total body water loss, which in more applicable terms, translates directly to around an 11% decrease in top end power. However, with all of the aforementioned benefits of Active's sugar ratios, sodium profile, and dialed-in osmolality, testing has actually proven that you can expect an increased power output of anywhere from 2 to 20%. In fact, a recent test showed an average differential of around 38 watts when compared to high-carb sports mix. Think about that, Active provides nearly twice the watt conservation than the most aerodynamic wheels on earth.

Not only does Active Hydration bolster your output, but it's also comprised of high-quality, natural, and organic ingredients. So, not only are you assured that what you're drinking is healthy, but more importantly, you won't experience the flavor fatigue that's all-too-common with the majority of hydration mixes. This means that every sip from the bottle will feel new, tasteful, and refreshing.

The Osmo Nutrition Active Hydration is available in one 400g container and in the flavors Organic Blackberry and Organic Orange.

Natural, smoothness. Ideal drink mix.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Omso hydration mix. I've read all about it almost a year ago, and then finally found them on sale (during the TdF) and went with two containers: one in each flavor. I was mostly intrigued with trying the Blackberry, but figured I'd get a bottle of the orange just to compare it with the Skratch in a blind taste test. Both Osmo mixes provide a good, subtle taste. You get the taste without being blasted with flavor or sugar - which I find is ideal on a ride. Personally, I find both flavors to be great, but I lean towards the blackberry when I need a pick-me-up or when I'm going for a fun ride. I just prefer it. Orange is such a common flavor and so it's hard to impress me with an orange sports drink. No doubt the blackberry will be ordered by me again. As far as downsides go, the Osmo rarely goes on sale, which is disappointing. I'm a bargain kinda guy. I dislike paying full price for anything. In that regard, Skratch takes the cake. It seems every two months or so, Skratch is on sale, which means when it comes to sports drinks, Skratch dominates on my rides. Plus the wide array (and expanding!) of flavors is encouraging.

Now to that blind taste test: I poured 8 oz of room temperature water in two glasses and labeled one glass "A" and the other "B". I then did the math to figure out how much mix should be used in each glass and then had my brother mix them in random glasses while I was out of the room. The flavor was orange. After sipping from both several times, I found it hard to tell the difference. The Skratch had a more Airborne taste (vitamin product). Not terrible, but it was my first thought. Keep in mind, I've used several Skratch exercise mixes throughout the year, so I had some experience with the taste. Overall, I selected the Osmo during the blind test, but unless it's on sale, my bottles will be full of Skratch.

Pros:
-Subtle taste
-Easily digestible

Cons:
-Rarely on sale (I'm a bargain hunter!)
-Subtle taste (could be a con for some)
-Not many flavors

Natural, smoothness. Ideal drink mix.

Taste Great!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love this hydration mix. Works well if you use carbonated water, mix, leave in the fridge to soften and vola! A great hydration mix!

OSMO Active Hydration Orange flavor.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this stuff. Goes down easy. Doesn't make me have gas and my stomach agrees with it. Have always bought the Orange because it tastes good, but is not too strong. I use this for every type of cycle racing and will continue to. Great product.

Easy to drink, makes a huge difference

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been using this for over a year. I prefer the orange, but the blackberry is OK, too.

It is noticeable how much easier it is to drink than straight water. So much so that I buy it in bulk for shorter rides from home. I buy a pack of the single serving packets to put in my jersey pockets for longer rides from home or for organized rides where I will be refilling on the road, and only water is available for refills. Mix and go.

Not only is it easier to drink than water, it stays easy to drink when it gets warm, as it inevitably will on longer rides.

Best sugar composition

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm an exercise physiologist and I recommend Osmo products to all my athletes and buy/use them myself because the science behind it is rock solid. This particular mix has the best sugar composition (types and amounts) on the market for performance, it's easy to digest so it's not likely to cause GI distress, it hydrates better than most other drink mixes, and the taste is great - not sickeningly sweet like other drink mixes, just a mild orange flavor. If you are serious about performance, this is your drink mix. Well worth the price point.

Great taste.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Osmo really got it, specially on flavor, even after you been riding for a while, and it warms up, still tastes really good, i live in Florida, and your thermal bottles dont last for a long time unless you add ice and i mean lots of ice, the orange is my favorite, but i really like both flavors, I even mix them some times, second to this i go with Skratch Labs.

Easy to Digest

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This product goes down easy and isn't full of sugar or artificial flavor that most other sports drinks are full of. The taste is very subtle while providing nutrients to keep going and going throughout the day. I strongly prefer the Blackberry flavor over the Orange, but that's just my opinion. If either of the flavors don't jive with you, take a look at Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration as it is very similiar, with different all natural flavors.

Not too sweet so it doesn't make you thirsty.. light and good.

How good for Osmo Nutrition Active Hydration...

How good for Osmo Nutrition Active Hydration ? Please tell me that bececause Peter Segon is using that items.

Best Answer Responded on

It works. The idea is that it has a very specific formula that optimizes the blend of glucose, sucrose and sodium to maximize the body's absorption of the fluid so you stay hydrated.

It also tastes pretty good, which is probably why Peter Sagan likes it.

Very good. As with all hydration mixes you gotta try it and this one is a safe bet as the taste is not overpowering.

taste great

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I like this supplement and, like skratch labs, is gentle on the stomach. It has a nice, gentle taste and provides just the right combo of carbs and electrolytes. I like the blackberry flavor......Top notch!

Its obviously down to Skratch or Osmo

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am basically a camel when I ride. I typically don't drink enough. That was before skratch and osmo. I got skratch first and instantly loved the taste and the performance benefits. Its my go to drink as I think it has more flavor (opposite of Perry Hall) than osmo. That being said Osmo has great flavor also. I have tried both blackberry and orange. Both good; no preference between the two. I will probably stock both skratch and osmo and use based on which one is on sale. I tried the sample packs in the specific amounts of water indicated so I got the tastes that is expected from the company. Its light and tasteful....just not as tasteful as skratch.

Alternates with Skratch in my Cabinet.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If I'm feeling a little more adventurous and want a bit more flavor to savor, I will use Osmo instead of Skratch. I find the performance to be nearly identical (read: AWESOME). I would suggest this to anyone who doesn't like a gatorade-y overpowering taste, but thinks that Skratch is too watery.

Having to choose one or the other is like picking a favorite child.

outstanding

Simply put the best hydration product I have tried. I love the taste, very subtle and have a hard time using anything else for hydration

Saved me!!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I wok landscaping in the Hot humid Texas weather and get heat exhaustion too often. Yesterday I came home from work feeling very weak. The UPS guy just delivered my first order of OSMO Active Hydration . I made a 20 oz drink. Drank it. In less than 30 minutes I felt great. I went back out into the hot weather and never got sick again. To top it off I got out of bed this morning and my legs felt very strong and not stiff at all!! Thanks for selling this awesome product!!

Easy on my tummy and perfect for hot dehydrating rides. After drinking Osmo I can not go back to anything else. Totally addicted!

Weird taste and mouth feel

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been struggling with my nutrition on the bike and run sections of my tri's, and was recommended Osmo. After using their complete lineup (pre, during, and post) for 6 weeks I've been struggling to drink the Active while exercising because I really don't like the smell and slimy mouth feel.

BEST

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I use to ride 240 km per week, and this is the best hydration product.
I notice the difference very quick.

Don't like the flavor

OSMO is easy to drink and I like the new tubs and especially the single serving packs. However, neither the blackberry or orange are particularly delicious unless they're ice cold.

I first used OSMO at the recommendation of my teammates and while I do think they're science is solid I much prefer Scratch Labs because it tastes better and mixes more easily. That being said OSMO is definitely my second favorite mix.

5 5

Not a gimmick

Not a gimmick is the highest compliment I can pay to any kind of supplement (or anything, really). I was a little skeptical when I first heard the word, 'osmolality,' because it's sounds like a made-up, junk-science word. But it's not. I've never used anything that seemed to just disappear from my stomach the way this stuff does. I've used it on everything from hour-long hot laps at lunch, to lengthier 5 hour rides on weekends. It's great for both. I definitely feel like I come home a lot more hydrated, as well, and I think I can attribute that to feeling like I'm able to drink more because it's not sitting in my stomach.
I have a fairly sensitive system, in general, and have to be pretty careful what I let myself eat and drink while riding, or it's a world of gastric discomfort. Osmo goes down easier than anything I've encountered thus far, even plain water. And, unlike water, where if you take a big pull at a stoplight, it sits and sloshes, Osmo just gets absorbed. It's really pretty surprising. I used Skratch Labs when it first launched, and liked it a fair amount, but I went back to plain water in pretty short order. In contrast, Osmo has come along on every ride since I tried it. I've used the blackberry flavor, and it's nice and berry-y, without being all that strong, and it even tastes maybe a bit salty, which is actually nice when you get into those longer rides.
Really a great product, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
