When you don't want to your kayak to double as a couch.
Owning a kayak you can take out to the bay and paddle around on the weekends sounds like a great idea, until you realize that storing a fifteen foot kayak in your fifth-floor studio apartment isn't all that practical. The Oru Coast Kayak solves this conundrum with a practical and convenient folding design that makes storing and transporting the kayak a whole lot easier than trying to lug a full-sized kayak out of the city and to the water.
Oru Kayaks started with small origami kayaks that eventually morphed into the full-on water-ready polypropylene boats the company is producing today, but they haven't lost their trademark portability. All Oru boats are built in the US from durable double-layered polypropylene that is rated to withstand 20,000 fold cycles, and the hardware consist of a combination of stainless steel, neoprene, rubber, and marine grade UV-protected plastic fittings, so you can rest comfortably knowing that repeated folding, lots of travel, and plenty of paddling won't spell trouble. The main cockpit is designed to make getting in and out of the boat easy, but is snug enough to offer the paddler plenty of control. Oru designed the Coast with a hull that tracks well on open water and maintains a smooth feel on ocean water and in placid lakes, included three bulkheads to keep the boat rigid and buoyant, and an adjustable seat and footrest that allow you to dial in the perfect fit for all-day comfort on the water.

Oru Coast Superior Performance
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Really impressed the first time out with the Coast. Gotta say I was really hesitant about this fold-able kayak.
Compact: We loaded 2 Oru Coast and 1 Oru Bay along with weekend camping gear and three gnarly outdoor dudes into a small Subaru hatchback with ease.
Setup: The initial setup took about 20 minutes for two of us, but once we reached our destination we had all three kayaks set up within 25 minutes.
Stability: The stability of these kayaks were superb and the ride very comfortable.
Room: There was plenty of storage space for a weekend journey up the Olympic Pacific Coast.
Summary: I only spent one day in the Coast but initial impression is "Wow!" what a great design that allows for easy transportation across many different and normally limited travel options. I hope to get out for another adventure soon and will update this at that time.
