After the avalanche settles, open your Ortovox S1 Avalanche Scanner/Transceiver at the top of the debris field and immediately see an overview of the situation so you know how many victims were buried, their orientation in reference to you, and the distance to each victim. This sensor-controlled, triple-antenna digital beacon features an advanced display and automatic signal separation for locating up to four buried victims without sorting out confusing signal interference.

  • Auto Scan function starts scanning as soon as you open the flip-up S1 so you can quickly make the best decisions with the best possible information
  • Navigator uses a bearing line, direction arrow, and distance value to guide you to first victim
  • Pin Spot fine search mode helps you find the right spot to probe with a clear circle and arrow display as well as the distance down to a tenth of a meter
  • Once you pinpoint one signal, mark it with the glove-friendly flag button and move onto the next victim without other signals clouding your search
  • Also features vital backcountry tools including an inclinometer, compass, and thermometer
  • Neoprene bag with elastic keeper strap secures the S1 to your body with a comfortable strap system
  • Fully updateable microprocessor lets the S1 remain cutting-edge for years

Bottom Line: A highly advanced, user-friendly beacon for guides or any backcountry travelers that need to locate multiple victims as fast as possible.

Space age!

I bought this beacon due to the range and multi search functions. Does well on battery life. There are alot of gadgets with in the system that I never use, but could be useful one day. Strap system is ok but could be better as in it slips and you have to re adjust from time to time. Whats really nice is the option to change change time you beacon is searching. So if you were searching then got buried yourself, it reverts back to send signal after it stops moving for the preset time or your set time. Multi search function is very cool. I find you really follow the flux lines in on a search where others bring you in on a straighter line. This is not a negative, its just something you may notice when searching for the first time.

I'm guessing it is a typo on Backcountry's part. Ortovox provides a 5 year warranty from the date of purchase or 6 years from the date of manufacture (whichever comes first).

The most user friendly beacon out there

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
July 6, 2011

Of all things in your backcountry kit, your beacon is the last thing you want to have any questions about. After getting familiar with the S1, you wont have any doubts about how easy it is to use. The display system is far more straightforward and two-dimensional than competitors, and the multi-search function easily allows you to hone in on different burials. The one drawback might be that it doesn't automatically turn on when you clip the waist strap, like old Ortovox beacons. Therefore, it's possible to put it on and forget to turn it on. But everybody always does beacon checks before heading out so this shouldn't be a problem!

Thanks for the info on the beacon Griff. I've been looking to upgrade my Ortovox X1 for a bit of time now I got 5-6 years ago, & I'll kick myself if I miss this killer deal on the S1.

See you at the TGR Premiere in the 'Vill in September or the 2011-12 opening of The Big Red Box, hopefully on opening day like last season. We can only hope,...

Will this beacon come with the latest firmware version 2.1 (aka 1.2.3074) already installed? (Assuming 1.2.3074 is the latest update anyway.)

It comes with the latest firmware available at the time of production. With the rate of advance in these though, I'd say you're likely to need an update prior to use.

So Simple, yet reliable

By:

Extremely easy to use. It doesn't just go off of dots and beeps. The screen actually shows you the direction of the beacons buried beneath the snow. I haven't had a true avalanche experience with this beacon but neither do I want to have to use it. I practice using it every year and even during the summer. By far out of everyone I know, they love the ease of use this beacon offers. And the easier to use, the faster you can do your job.

Reliable, fast and fits in the palm of your hand. Has a great range too and some really useful functions, like switching between modes in the event of secondary avalanches. Worth the money of the price tag.

Awesome

Really fast, great range. Not quite as good midrange as the Pieps but better close range and with multiples. I found and dug out both practice beacons before my partner found either of them. Great extra features too!
