The Ortovox Probe 240 is a reliable mid-length probe for use in avalanche victim retrieval. (Ortovox uses the same creative model naming system as Life Link but when they say 240, they mean 240). The sections of this probe are each individually colored red, yellow, or blue, making it easier to determine the precise snow depth to which you have probed. This probe weighs 250 grams or 9 oz and is 15.5 inches long when collapsed.
Bottom Line: Get more probe.

Great Features Overall, But Requires Some Upper-Body Strength

The right length, a nice light weight, and a nice low price, plus has very useful depth markings.
Assembly is fairly quick and easy, BUT requires some upper-body strength (i.e., when pulling the little knot over the ridge). I never had any problems, but my lightweight wife did, so we got her a different model that requires no physical exertion whatsoever.

For my area, this avalanche probe is the perfect length. Easy to snap together with one quick tug and sturdy so no worries there.

I did not have to use the probe but it was good to have along. It is light and easy to use. The bag it comes in is very well constructed.

In spite of the popularity of telescoping backcountry poles/probes I would recommend always carrying a separate lightweight probe while traveling in avalanche prone terrain. The extra time needed to convert your pole to a probe could be a fatal waste while a friend lays buried under the snow. The 240 cm deploys quickly without hassle. An essential part of any backcountry powder junkies arsenal of gear.
