Complete convenience for belayers and rappelers.

The Omega Pacific Tephra TrapWire Carabiner eliminates cross-loading and still sports high strength and less weight, making it an excellent belay or rappel biner. By integrating the gate's spring in the TrapWire keeper that keeps ropes and devices in place, the Tephra was able to shed a few ounces and add more convenience for belayers. The keylock nose makes sure your rope doesn't get caught when you're taking climbers off belay.

    A more complicated 'biner

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've used a twist lock biner for belaying for years. Setting up the belay was second nature with an ATC. The Omega Pacific Tephra TrapWire Carabiner is a bit more complicated. I have to make sure the ATC cable doesn't fall behind the trap wire when I open it for my belay loop and sometimes when the cable rides on top of the trap wire it will keep the gate from opening. The twist lock mechanism is really stiff and kinda small compared to other twist locks. The gate as also super stiff compared to what I was used to.

I give it five stars for having the trap wire because once the belay is set up it's bombproof. Over all I give it three stars for the stiff gate and the more complicated setup.
