Nice boot, odd sizing?????

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small
  • Height: 6'0"
    Weight: 185 lbs
    Size Purchased: 12

Olukai definitely has some weird sizing attributes when it comes to their shoe line. When purchasing the Kamuelas, I went with the same size that I wore in their Moloa Kohana (size 11). The Moloa is a half size smaller than what I normally wear, so I ordered the Kamuelas in 11.5. Though 11.5 is my true size the Kamuelas proved to be slightly tight, so I ordered the 12s. This is where it comes to personal preference on fit. With the 12s my foot has about the width of a finger between the end of the shoe and my toe. The shoe fit slightly loose. With the 11.5s, I had a little less than half a finger width between my toe and the end of the shoe and my foot was snug around the sides. My worry was that the 12s once worn, would feel like my foot would slosh around, and the exact opposite with the 11.5s in that they might not break in and stay tight. After researching on-the-line and using my own intuition I stuck with the 12s. The Kamuelas are not a trail / hiking boot and are a casual shoe that is to fit like a moccasin. I figured if they do overstretch, I'll just get a thicker sock or stuff the front with tissue paper. It isn't like I am running/hiking in them and will develop hot spots or irritability.

For reference, I am 6' @ 185lbs
I generally wear a neutral shoe and under pronate.
Other shoes for reference that I wear/wore.
11.5 Saucony Triumph
11.5 Asic Gel-Kayano
11.5 Vasque Juxt

Easy, Comfortable Style

  • Fit:True to size
  • Height: 6'3"
    Weight: 190 lbs
    Size Purchased: 12

These are my go-to shoes for work everyday. I originally got them because of their unique style. But I fell in love with them because they are so comfortable.I have a stand-up desk at work so comfortable shoes are essential. As they have broken in they just got better and better. As mentioned in previous reviews, the leather sole holds up well as the rubber pads take most of the wear and tear.

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs small
  • Height: 5'6"
    Weight: 135 lbs
    Size Purchased: 8.5

I really like these shoes, as they are lightweight but also offer as much cushion as my Olukai flips. As has been described, the length in these shoes might be on the short side, but the overall volume is high. I enjoy this, as I can really wiggle my toes throughout the day, as though I am still in sandals but look slightly more adult at work.

Makes a classy casual bastard.

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs small

Got these for my dude. Loves them for causal and dress use and says they are quite comfy.

Shoes are great. I was thinking the leather on the bottom would be a bad idea, but no wear so far as the rubber pads take all the wear. Very good sole construction. They run slightly small in size.

Good shoe, runs about .5 size too small

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

I've worn this for about a week. It's been a great shoe. Really comfortable for walking around town. It's a good looking shoe, relaxed comfort. It does run small. I always wear a 10.5, had to move up to an 11.

OluKai Kamuela Shoes / Chukkas Rock!

I recently bought a pair of OluKai Moloa shoes (see my separate review of those excellent shoes). I was so impressed by quality, fit and appearance, that I bought a pair of Kamuelas in Nero (black). These shoes are true-to-size and my size 10.5 fits perfectly. I do have slightly wide feet and I think OluKai designs their shoes with a comfortable, "island" fit (not too loose, but definitely not too tight). Other reviewers say that Kamuelas are a little tight around ankle / at top of lacing. I've read on other sites that over time, with some break-in, they become more and more comfortable. Mine were only a little snug and I simply didn't cinch my laces too tight. These shoes look equally good with jeans at the pub or with some Royal Robbins pants at work.

    great shoe quality problems

Beautiful shoe and fits great but it came out of the box with a loose thread that opened up a seam on the leather. As a result I have to exchange them which is a big hassle.

I had high expectations for this shoe, Loved the look of it and thought it was pretty comfortable, especially with the super feet in. However, after just a couple jaunts in the rain, the leather uppers became especially stiff and contorted (shame on me for not waterproofing with NickWax). The stiffness was alleviated by a bit of leather oil/saddle soap but they still stayed a little bent out of shape.

The kicker (pun) came though after I had put them in the closet for about a month or so for the remainder of the wet winter. Upon taking them out on a spring day, I noticed that there was a discoloration around the shank, it turned out that it had been growing mold all winter (once again shame on me for not waterproofing)! Despite the fact that I washed and scrubbed most of the mold off, they weree not quite the same and actually started molding again! I ended up tossing these rather than taking advantage of Backcountry's return policy (I wish I had).

All in all, a promising product, but ultimately, leather shouldn't mold (none of my other leather shoes or boots have).

If you buy, waterproof and keep them dry!

        Not what I was expecting...

...after reading all the 5 star reviews. Paid $120 on-sale and don't think they're worth $50. I'll give them 2 stars for style (they looked good coming out of the box) but as another poster mentioned, they're uncomfortable around the ankles. No, they were just plain painful. I had to apply multiple applications of mink oil just to get them to soften up to just be bearable. I also had to apply the mink oil everywhere else as the leather was staining from the get-go (where's that water-resistance as advertised?). Lastly, my feet are sensitive to cold and I've found these not only a "cold" shoe to wear, but that they have a severe lack of cushioning on the sole (thus the cold?). I honestly don't think I'll buy Olukai's again.

        Olukai Kamuela Shoe - Men's

Love the shoe, love the look and high quality... just a bit funny feeling around the ankles as the ankle top of the shoe is a bit thick so you feel it against the skin more than other shoes the same height. I wear them daily at work, and have had them for a few weeks now. Hopefully they will soften around the ankle as they wear in... Would give them 5 stars if it weren't for the noticeable ankle "hug" that I've never noticed with any other shoe.

I wear a size 13 olukai flip flops and...

I wear a size 13 olukai flip flops and both pairs I own fit perfectly, Bought one size bigger then my actual size, whihc was recommended by many. Does the same go for this shoe?

i always go a size bigger with flops just because the variation between brands and models in the size and placement of the strap(s). i am pretty sure a lot of other people do the same. i do not do that for shoes or boots of any brand.

most of the reviews on other sites are saying that this shoe fit true to size.

          Da Kine!

Found this shoe by looking for something ergonomic for aging feet. I read the two earlier posted reviews which were pretty enthusiastic and helped me decide to at least order these to try them out. Now I've waited just over a week to make sure, but I now add my voice by saying this is one of the best shoes I've ever worn. When you inspect them closely, every design idea and shoe feature have been carefully thought out, stout materials have been selected, and they feel great, are lightweight yet tough, and provide the ankle support I was looking for. A late winter snowstorm here this week gave them a test on snowy, icy surfaces and they made me feel safe and secure walking and were really warm. I'm tempted to order another pair as backup, as designs change and inventory comes and goes. This shoe is a home run and worth every penny!

It appears as if the sole is partially leather with rubber protruding through the leather...

Does this design make the sole prone to water stains or water damage?

The leather portion of the sole is just cosmetic, rubber underneath. No water stains, no damage to the leather. It's a very high quality, good wearing leather. I have a few scuffs, but it just looks like nice aging, not like a shoe in poor repair.

I have a pair of OluKai Moloas and a pair of Kamuelas - see my reviews of these excellent shoes. Both have the rubber "traction pods. I agree with Ryan Hamilton's comment above, the more these shoes are work, and the more distressed (in a good way) the leather becomes, the better the shoe looks. I wouldn't wear these on talus/scree in the mountains, but around town, at the beach, etc. they're excellent.

The "traction pods" felt unusual to me at first. But walking around downtown Chicago on first wear, with no socks, my feet felt great. It turns out, for me, the traction pods sort of massage my feet.

Best shoes I have ever owned

These shoes are so comfortable they make walking effortless. They are the basically flat - the heel is level with the ball - so that you feel like you are walking barefoot. And they look really cool and go with just about anything.

              Comfortable, Excellent Construction, Ergonomic

These shoes are awesome. I wear them without socks because the cushioning on the inside is ridiculously comfortable. Gives me a walking on air feel. The leather is premium quality and craftsmanship is excellent. Worth the $$
