I live on a river in Montana...Not an ocean in sight. Will this be good for paddling on flat water with some slight current? We have kayaked several times, but are by no means experts. Just want an inexpensive toy that we can manuever. Thanks

Hey Michelle,
While this was indeed designed for ocean play, it will be just fine on flat water.

Kimberly, this could be a decent kayak for beginners but so much depends on what you plan to do with it. If you are new to kayaking you really should go to a speciality store and talk to them about designs and what kind of water you will be using it on most of the time.

Is this a good beginner kayak for ocean play? I've read a lot of reviews about other kayaks being too slow or for fishing only. This one doesn't sound like it's either of those things. What type of paddle should I buy? Thanks!

Christine, this is a great beginner kayak if your intended use is ocean fun. When you look for a paddle watch the sizing charts for the correct length. Don't buy a really cheap and heavy paddle because you will be looking for a better one after a few outings.

I've used a yak board for years, best use flat paddle smaller size prevents corkscrewing or over steering. Flat means better rudder for steering, more responsive than curved. The leg staps help control bow in rougher waves. If you want upper body workout this is an arobic blast. If you like surfing lean back and paddle over and thru waves like you own them. Once you are out paddle paralelle to approaching waves. When you are in the catch zone make 90 degree turn paddle & catch for the ride of your life. Good luck & stick with it. Best wipe out tactic go in head first to prevent any head or neck injury from impact of yak

Just bought a used yak board off craigslist and the only problem I can find is that the center hatch won't open. After looking at it, it almost seems to have been glued closed but with a matching blue glue?? Is there some special trick to opening the clear plastic plug in the center?

I've had my yak since 2001 and I can tell you some awesome surfing stories. I have caught 6 ft waves on the great lakes in michigan and have kayaked in caves and rapids as well. they are the best kayak ever in my opinion and i plan to purchase another one as soon as money allows. oh yeah i bought my last car because the back seats fold down and i knew my kayak would fit nicely. dont have to tie it to the roof if you own a saturn or other car that has back seats that fold down so the trunk can hold it....

Still looking for an answer. Each time we take our Yaks out they fill with a gallon or two of water. We made sure the plugs were snug and it still happens. Is this normal?
olddante
Member since
Leaks? Normal? Only on the Titanic.... there is a defect somewhere. A quart of water, maybe in a couple of hours of paddling is acceptable. Here' the trick - open your plug and hose in a gallon or so. Stand the boat on end and see where it leaks. Try the plug end first, then flip it. Still can't find leak? Add more water and put it up on the side(s) to check seams.Use Shoe Goo around any leaking metal fittings

Although all plugs are snug and there doesn't appear to be any holes, we found that both seem to fill with about a gallon of water after about 2 hours out. Is this normal?

I find about that much water after about an hour of surf ridding, some think it is coming from where the drain wells mate to the hull, I think most of it comes from the rivets that hold the fittings. As the yak was designed for surfing water is no big deal you just pull up on the beach and drain it, it seems the newer yaks have a bigger leak problem than my two both bought around '99

We bought these for summer use on a small lake with considerable boat wake. Took them out for 2 hours and had a blast. Easy to get in and out of the water. Good Manuverability in calm channels and amongst the wake of the power boats even for a novice.

Ok, so this question isnt specifically about the Ocean Kayak Yak Board, but is about all sit-on-tops in general. Im hoping there is a pro or two out there who is experienced at paddling with a dog in the boat.
We do not own any kayaks now, but are considering the purchase of one or two very soon. Our plans are for relaxed recreational kayaking with two black labs. I weigh 240, she weighs 130, the dogs are 75 and 60 lbs. We want to take the kayaks on local lakes and on the relatively slow parts of the Sacramento and American rivers. We are also both divers, so a kayak that could be a dive platform would be great, but that is far near the bottom of the priority list. We probably will not need to take much gear, and will be day tripping only. Any suggestions? Is there a single tandem that would work for two people and two dogs? If not, are ther single kayaks that are good for a person and a dog? Or do we need two tandems?

Before you blow some dough, I'd recommend renting a boat or two at a livery. I believe if you compare yaks to a canoe you'll find a canoe fits your needs better...something like an Old Town Discovery 169. Only one way to know for sure: compare on the water.

I bought my Yak Board to play in the surf, which I do a couple of days every week. It's perfect for someone who is around 175lbs. I've caught some pretty great rides when they present themselves in South Carolina. I've also taken it down the Edisto River for an amazing day. I'm in love with this boat and so glad I bought it a year ago. My poor surfboard hasn't gotten wet this summer.

Della,
There is a replacement plug listed on the manufacturer's website, is this what you are looking for?
http://store.oceankayak.com/products/313499/Drain_Plugs
The pull down menu lists both threaded and push in style plugs. Hope this helps!

In a pinch, we have found that a wine cork works well also! We always keep one in the truck as a spare.

What is the difference between the Ocean Kayak's Yak Board and the Malibu Mini?
TJP
Member since
Anna,
The name of the "Yak Board" gives away the major difference. Although both sit on top boats, the Yak Board is more open and meant for playing in ocean waves without getting water logged. The Malibu Mini-x is built for fishing and includes provisions for rod holders, a live well and dry hatches. What are you looking to do with the boat primarily?

Which kayak would be the best for rivers with Class III rapids that are narrow? I've kayaked before but always rented so I don't know which one it is only that it was an Ocean Kayak. Thanks.

Check out the shorter boats (around 10 feet). shorter boats turn easier all things equal. Check out the Liquid Logic Coupe 10, good sit on top for Rivers and Lakes.
