Not as good quality as my 2011 tetra

I’m replacing my 2011 tetra which I absolutely love…but I’m disappointed in this one…while installing a rod pod I noticed the the mounting strap holes don’t have threaded brass inserts…plus the plastic nipples inside were drilled thru with your screws which would have leaked water into the hull…I had to cut the plastic nipples off and nut /bolt the pod straps on…I hope it doesn’t leak…very disappointed

does it all

I have owned my Tetra 12 for over 3 years and have caught both freshwater and large saltwater fish without issue. It has been through some good waves, fully kitted out with anchor, fish finder/batteries and railblaza attachments. I have hauled in 150lb seven gilled sharks on my baby and have caught/landed over 300 fish this far.

Narrow, but not the old Scrambler

I was excited that Ocean Kayak had a new 12ft boat with a 28" beam. I prefer choppy, coastal waters and miss my first generation Scrambler. I ordered the boat through REI with in store pick up. While I generally love REI, and they have great customer service, I will never order a boat through them again. The Tetra came with a bunch of small damage from shipping. REI discounted the price, so I kept it. When I took it out this morning (left overnight in my truck), I found more damage! With my friends all ready to go, I decided to take the Tetra out on lake anyway. It was a useful test. I am 5'7", 200lbs, low center of gravity. High-back seats just get in my way, and encourage lazy posture. A phillips screwdriver is required to remove the seat from the Tetra. Ugh. Bad planning on my part to take it to lake before going over the boat carefully at home. Foot pegs are large, grippy, and easy to adjust; but my Tetra came without the middle of the track secured to the boat. They wiggled like crazy while paddling! I noticed the small crack in footwell as soon as my friend helped me lower it in water. I always transport kayaks upside down, so had not fully investigated the top. After about an hour on lake, the Tetra had taken in enough water to make it almost impossible to paddle. I found a shallow area to get out of kayak and remove bilge from the cargo hatch.Cargo hatch is very easy to use! The old, 28" beam, scramblers could take on water and retain stability and tracking. I am not confident that the Tetra 12 would carry me to shore if it gets bitten by a shark. Not wanting to complain again, and being skilled at plastic-welding for kayak repair, I just brought it home to my work table. After welding the crack, I covered the area with pereguard, so that it still looks pretty. I then secured the peg track where it had an obvious hole for that purpose, using kayak rivets. Finally, I finished removing all the bits related to the seat, and put gaskets around the screws that went directly into plastic. I am excited to take it out on our bigger lake to test self-rescue. It seems like it will be easy to remount, despite my physical limitations. Pros: Nice cup/stuff area; large foot legs, reasonable stability and tracking in wind and boat wake. Cons: Loses all tracking and stability when taking on water, doesn't have a hard chine or keel like the older Scrambler. Recommendations: Buy from a kayak specialty store that can secure the peg track and safely remove the seat before you pick it up.

Handles well, Tracks well but

Boat really handles well in the rough, even with no rudder loaded down the tracking is good. 53lbs it’s way easy to handle. The center console fills with water every time, to the point my phone and keys in a case floated out. Would give this 5 stars otherwise

Too easy!

I bought this Tetra for my 14 yr old daughter - over the last couple months we've purchased several different Ocean Kayak sit-on-tops for everyone in the family. None of the kids have ever paddled before and where we landed in Texas, we are surrounded by water! - lakes, rivers with hundreds of navigable miles, even the creek behind our house is big enough for them to get the feel of it. The 14-yo "got it" within a handful of paddle strokes, easily tracked through some weird below-the-surface counter movement, and can carry it herself for a short distance, even though we usually team up or use a cart b/c why ruin your back early! Love these kayaks, easy to move, easy to use, easy to clean up, low-maintenance, just too easy. Single mold means it won't pop apart if they hit a rock in a river. I'm including photos of other family OK's as well... my Trident-13's bow in some frames, the girls' Tetra-12, Venus-11, and Venus-10. This is all on a really big creek, not a river or lake!
