Pilot Knife

NRS makes nothing but paddling gear, so it's no surprise the NRS Pilot Knife is a dialed-in river rescue knife. It has a bright orange handle, so you won't lose track of it in your bag. It has a partially serrated edge with a rope-cutting hook, and a blunt tip to prevent accidental punctures if you drop it in a raft. There's an oxygen tank wrench built into the handle along with a bottle opener, and the tip also functions as a flathead screwdriver. The included plastic sheath lashes easily to your PFD and holds the knife securely, even upside-down.

Bottom Line: River guides and swiftwater rescue crews trust NRS.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

Good knife at a great price

This knife replaced a Gerber River Shorty for me. I keep it on the outside of my PFD (P-vest), which is 99% of the time fine for whitewater kayaking and rescue scenarios.
It is somewhat bulky if trying to climb into a raft from the water (gets caught on line).
Like any knife kept on the outside of a PFD, I do recommend attaching it via a cord so it does not fall to the bottom of the river...

How does this knife hold up in saltwater? 99% of my paddling

How does this knife hold up in saltwater? 99% of my paddling is in the ocean and i've gone through more knives than I have gone through some of my terminal tackle. Would you recommend this for ocean use?

Should handle just fine as it is made of stainless steel. The key thing is to rinse the knife with fresh water after each time in salt water or rust stains will develop. Any river knife is suitable for the sea so long as you take care of it in the way I just mentioned.

Your best bet is to get a knife with H1 stainless steel, they are made for use in salt water. I know spyderco sells knifes with H1, as do many other companies.

Knife that doesnt disappoint

By:

I did some research before buying a river knife, only knife with decent reviews, can't testify to Gerber's quality, but this is a knife that stays where it belongs. Had it for over 2 months and the thing has not popped out of the sheaf. I had a friend loose a Co-pilot but that's because the actual sheaf broke, with the attachment clip still attached to his PFD. NRS replaced the knife but im sure my friend will use a lanyard like myself next time. Only issue is that it can get in the way depending how you rig it to your PFD. But overall a solid knife

Great knife

This little knife has it all -- a great sheath that clips securely to your PFD and holds the knife firm - yet easily accessible and unlockable, a blunt-sided cream cheese/butter spreader, bottle opener and a blunt tip (in case you over-used that bottle opener and got a bit klutzy). A great piece of gear for river runners.
