Description

Catch your limit while the NRS Chinook Personal Flotation Device keeps you safe on the water.

NRS added ten front pockets to the Chinook Personal Flotation Device, so you can keep every speck of tackle available on your next fishing trip. Designed for those who prefer to fish from a kayak or raft, the Chinook Personal Flotation Device provides 16lb 8oz of flotation incase you end up in the water instead of pulling the fish into your boat. NRS concentrated the flotation on the front of this angler's PFD to make it more comfortable when you sit in a highback seat.

great for kayaking

I got this for general kayaking, not fishing. I wanted all the pockets so I could access smaller gear without removing my skirt. so far its been a great PFD. The only problem is the lash tab is velcroed on, my river knife will pull the the velcro without coming out of the sheath.

NRS Chinook PFD is Awesome!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The perfect combination of PFD and Fisherman's vest!

I bought both an XXL and an L/XL and kept the XXL because I found the multiple adjustment points make it easily adjustable down to a Large size or up to an XXL , to easily accommodate as many, or as few, layers of clothing I elect to wear.

It's very comfortable to wear and the foam is high enough to allow a comfortable fit when sitting in my pontoon.

There are plenty of pockets for all those flies and tools!

I'm 6'2" - 220# and have a 44 chest. If I plan to wear this vest over a fleece or other foul weather jacket, is the XL large enough or would need to step up to the XXL and cinch it in? Being a zipper fit, I'm wondering if the size chart includes wearing clothing beneath the vest?

Responded on

I would go for the L/XL and NOT the XXL. I think that you would be swimming in the larger size.

Chinook is fishing for PFD

I love this life vest for its capacity, styling and comfort. Let's face it, you're not going to wear a PFD that is uncomfortable, so get one that is. I've been using mine for years without issue. Always wear your life vest!

First backcountry.com order scores 5 stars

The review is suppose to be about the product, but first, I'd like to thank backcountry.com for having what I wanted, having a great price and for getting it to my very quickly. I do a ton of online ordering each year and this experience was by far, one of the best.

As for the NRS Chinook PFD, I can't give enough credit here either. I purchased the khaki/olive which arrived handsome and very well constructed. It has a great range of adjustment for a perfect fit and multiple pockets for storing lots of cool gadgets. This PFD was purchased for Kayak fishing, both in fresh and salt water and appers it will last a very long time.

Thank you backcountry.com and NRS...you guys rock!!

Has anyone tried this or any other PFD for double- handed spey casting? I tried a number of PFDs at my local kayak retailer and they all interfered with a snap-T, snake roll and double spey cast because of the bulk of the flotation foam in the solar plexus area.

Spey casters need an unobstructed front with most of the flotation in the back. Are there any PFDs like that?

Responded on

Floatation located solely on the back would position your face in the water should be be rendered unconscious. Not good. A quality auto inflator would be best. Check out the Mustang Auto Hydrostatic Inflatable PFD MD3183.

This is the first time I ever Kayaked and my life vest was perfect. It did not ride up and was not in the way of the backrest.

Pockets for everything, fishing gear, safety/survival gear, lash points or fly patch option. The flotation in the back being up so high really accomodates a backrest in a canoe or kayak. Very important...Really nice piece of gear. I weigh 220lbs and it keeps me afloat and head above water...Sweet!

Great PFD

I've worn this vest on a few trips to the lake so far. It's great for wading and was comfortable for several hours of constant wear. It provides ample flotation and has lots of pockets and straps that are great for organization and keeping my gear close at hand. I'm 5'9" and 170lbs and the S/M fits me well.

Great Product

Bought this pfd based on good reviews. I've used it on a few fishing trips, fits well, good ventilation. I have not pretended to be drowning, so do not know how it would hold up 250 lbs.
So far I would rate this product A+

Great life jacket for kayak fishing

I'm a 6'4" 196lb male and I went with the L/XL size orange/gray jacket. I chose the orange/gray color scheme for visibility/safety reasons. The jacket is extremely adjustable and makes for a nice tailor-like fit. Webbing and minimal materials on the lower-back area of the jacket maintain the comfort of my kayak seat without pushing me towards the front of the seat.

Buoyancy is typical of this type of a jacket; enough to keep you afloat while in the water but little enough to maintain comfort while out of the water. I sink like a rock without a life jacket and this one held me up pretty well.

The lower pockets accommodate Plano-brand small clear tackle boxes. With two of these, I can carry a selection of 10 lures all within my vest.

Considering the performance that comes with the price of this vest I would certainly purchase again and/or recommend to a friend.

Long Haul PFD

Bought the NRS because I saw it come highly recommended by other paddlers. I then sailed a Hobie Adventure Island sailing kayak to Padre Island National Seashore from Port Isabel, 37 nautical miles (42.5 statute).

I recommend the NRS Chinook because of its comfort and adjustability. Kind of reminded me of my beloved flak jacket I wore in Iraq back in 04-05, minus all the weight!!! Meaning: a great, utilitarian vest with tons of storage for gear heads and fly-fishers and paddlers and sailors. Semper Fi!

Solid life jacket

An all around solid jacket, It fit well and and doesn't get in the way when I'm paddling or fishing. The quality of the zippers, pockets, and straps can take abuse well and the whole thing keeps you upright when you go into the drink.

It looks smaller because it has a snugger fit, and therefore it is.

NRS Chinook PFD

Excellent movement and the pockets are brilliant. Week spent paddling in the BWCA fishing was a breeze with the Chinook; hardly could tell I was wearing it!

Write your question here... you say this is for boating what about wading, can this be used for wading in streams?????

Best Answer Responded on

Of course it can. Can you think of any reason why a boating life jacket couldn't be used in a stream? Its not as low profile as most wading/fishing life jackets but this one eliminates the need for a fishing vest.
