Much how legend tells of Nero fiddling while Rome burned beneath from a fire of his own creation, so Northwave watches the world of cycling shoes burn with pensive enjoyment after releasing the aptly Nero Shoes. The Nero provides the perfect storm of engineered characteristics. And from ventilation to comfort to stiffness-to-weight ratio, the shoes go toe-to-toe with the titans of the cycling shoe industry, and much of the time, come out the victor.

The shoes feature Northwave's finest carbon fiber outsole, the Ultralight Carbon. This outsole tips the scales around a mere 60 grams of overall weight. Additionally, Northwave designed it with an extremely low stack height, one of the lowest we've ever seen, in fact. The sole's rigidity is maximized, and accordingly, you'll experience a minimal loss in of your power transfer to the pedals. The outsole also features Northwave's Airflow System, where there are three ventilation ports fore and aft on the sole. So, cool air will flow over the foot, keeping you well-ventilated and in control on race day.

Further along the lines of comfort, the Nero shoes feature Northwave's new Biomap technology. Basically, this design extends to all aspects of the shoe, making its every feature an anatomically designed masterpiece. For the uppers, Biomap entails a seamless design that eliminates abrasion against the skin, the principle effect of which is a level of comfort that almost feels custom, and by maintaining a proper foot position, a direct transmission of power. Additionally, you'll find that the Nero shoes make use of Northwave's Extreme Air Footbed. This footbed has been specifically designed to be worn with the Ultralight Carbon outsole. Why? Because it has numerous vents that directly correspond to the aforementioned ventilation ports in the outsole. So, airflow doesn't simply stop at the footbed, it continues over the entire foot. Also, Northwave designed the footbed to be anallergic and antibacterial. This way, germs and stink are kept at bay after hours and hours of competition-level riding.

For the closure system, the Nero receives a taste of almost everything in the Northwave playbook. Closest to the toe, you'll find a standard hook-and-loop strap that's been paired with secondary Speed Lace Winch (SLW). The patented SLW operates off of a micrometric dial that permits infinitesimal adjustments to the volume of the shoe. And securing the instep is Northwave's S.B.S. ratcheting system. Together, the three closures ensure comfort, but by controlling volume and support, they maximize your power transfer.

The Northwave Nero Shoes are available in the color Black/white, with black being your left shoe and white being your right. Sizing is available in whole and half sizes from 39.0 to 48.0. Please note that these shoes are designed for use with either standard three-hole cleat systems or Speedplay. However, Speedplay cleats require the use of Northwave's Speedplay Adapter Kit.

Great shoe at an awesome value

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small
  • Size Bought: 42.5

I purchased this shoe in a size 42.5 based on its US 10 sizing chart. I found that it ran a bit tight and my toe would rub ever so slightly the toe box. Still, I decided to give these a shot and, am I glad I did! I'll begin by saying that these shows will turn heads. I always got compliments, as well as questions about why they were "mismatched". The carbon sole is stiff to provide optimal power transfer to the crank. The mixed closure system provides excellent support and keeps the feet in the ideal pedaling position. The construction is meticulous and the details are very cool. It comes with 2 soles. A slim sole and a regular (thicker) sole. I've ridden in harsh winter conditions and paired with shoe covers, these shoes were great in sub-freezing temps. In the hot summers, they provide great ventilation to help keep your feet dry and comfortable.

All in all, it's difficult to find a better shoe at this price point that will be as good as this one.

I have been racing with shimano r-315's (custom molded) for 2 years now. When I received the northwave shoes i was blown away. First of all it comes in a leather box that looks like its carrying the queens crown jewels. The shoes look great. The construction is refined and sturdy like Shimano but much more fancy and Cipo-esque. The comfort and fit is unbelievable!!!! Size down from shimano im 43.5 reg/ 43wide shimano and northwave fit me perfectly at 42.5!!!!
