Not every cyclist holds a longing desire to be in the peloton, and the same can be said about cycling shoes. For some, the open road garners the same excitement as a race, yet a race shoe proves to be more of a hindrance than a help. That's why Northwave created the Fondo S.B.S. Shoes. They provide just the right amount of stiffness-to-weight, while also being exceedingly comfortable. So, when you're a week into your cycle tour, you'll be worried about the work stacking up on your desk at home, not your feet.

Knowing that comfort is imperative over the course of a tour, Northwave's Fondo features its aptly named Touring outsole. This outsole has a construction that strikes the ideal balance between weight, rigidity, and comfort. To achieve this Northwave used a natural rubber for its composition. So, when you're walking your rig, or decide that you'd like to take a stroll, you'll experience the comfort of a supportive hiking boot. However, when you're pedaling in the saddle, you'll benefit from an assuring stiffness that won't berate your feet over the long haul. This is possible by the rubber's thickness being varied in order to provide a dynamic flex in targeted areas. Additionally, the rubber chassis creates a comfortable interface with the uppers, allowing a small amount of spill-over for when either your feet swell or when you experience strong torsional forces on the ground.

Moving up the shoe, Northwave made the uppers from a durable, yet breathable, polyurethane material. This creates a conforming upper that doesn't skimp on protection from trail hazards, or whatever else you that you might find on your journey. And for extra ventilation, Northwave also included Airmesh inserts throughout the upper. The location of the inserts follow what Northwave call its Airflow System. The lower vents channel air to exit at the rear, while the side vents supply a constant source of fresh air over the foot. For retention, the Fondo uses two hook-and-loop straps to control the volume of the shoe and Northwave's S.B.S. retention buckle to regulate security pressure. This ratchet relies on a micrometric system that's been designed around the concept of precision. So, you can incrementally and precisely control the tightness of the instep, either before the ride or on-the-fly.

At the heel, you'll find Northwave's Omega Heel design. This is part of the Airflow System concept, but its rigid construction also provides protection and an increased power transfer. In fact, the Omega heel has been molded as to shape your heel. So, on hard upstrokes out of the saddle, your heel won't slip, and accordingly, your pedal stroke's efficiency is maximized.

The Northwave Fondo Shoes are available in whole and half sizes from 38.0 to 47.0 and in the color White/black.

Great first pair of shoes.

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

I have used this a few days for mountain biking. This is my first pair of shoes and I am enjoying them so far. The traction is great off the bike and they work well with my Crank Bros. Candy 2. I was counseled that the rubber sole might not be stiff enough for long bike times and that seems to be true. I get a little toe tingle after a few hours. That may be me just getting used to things though. The uppers and straps give this shoe a great fit. Overall I am really pleased.
