- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: Runs small
Fit is great, I'm 6'4 and both the large and Xl were plenty long. Large was tight in the chest (I'm a 43" chest), and Xl was perfect. I was very impressed with the smooth transition between lg and xl sizes, xl had exactly the extra room I needed without adding a bunch of bulk to the cut. 5 stars on fit.
Features on the vest were well thought out, I like the smooth lightweight mesh they chose for the pockets, it keeps them from being bulky and you don't notice them there until you need them. collar is a little bit bulky and extends super high. This would be very useful for blocking wind and you can tuck your cin slightly to block all windflow over neck.
The material on this vest is unique and i'm not so sure about it's utility. It is as soft as a microfleece but has no loft. I was expecting something more along the lines of polartech powerstretch with a smooth side and a lofty side but this material is the same tightwoven (tighter than powerstretch) soft stretchy stuff on both sides. Compared to powerstretch this material is slightly heavier (260 g/m) yet not as warm as it has no loft, it is much more stretchy and blocks wind better than powerstretch while still being breathable.
These are only initial impressions, I deducted one star due to warmth/weight ratio of material.

It's just what it says: light, thin, stretchy, high collar. Unfortunately, I was looking for more of a soft casual fleece. This one would be a real performer for core warmth (nice and long to keep drafts off your waist) during high activity. But for casual wear, it's a little too techy and the generous wind flap on the zipper placket is pretty noticeable unless it's zipped up (and the neck really is high). All in all, seems like a great-performing fleece but I didn't take the description seriously enough and was looking for something else. As for size, I'm 5-10 and 140 or less; the Small is a very good fit--close but the ample stretch in the fabric allows for movement.

I am 5'9" and 165 lbs.. I see its slim fit and I don't like things too tight. Would M be the best fit or step up to L?
"Slim fit" is a pretty loose concept especially within the world of outdoor clothing. What may be slim to one brand would be regular or even relaxed in another. Based simply on your height and weight I would recommend a medium.
However, I would also recommend comparing your chest measurement to the sizing chart on this product page. Since the Norrona Svalbard is a vest you don't have to worry about sleeve length in the large, and the real question is whether it will fit you around the torso.
I really like the fit of this vest, it is slim fitting which makes it nice to wear under a shell. It is a little longer than most shirts so you don't have to worry about it bunching up under your jacket when you're moving around. The only thing I had to get used to with this vest was the left-hand zipper
