Epic days in the backcountry require the waterproof breathable protection of the Norrøna Men’s Narvik Gore-Tex Performance Shell Pant. This loose-fit freeride pant helps you stay dry and comfortable no matter what conditions you encounter. Reinforced ankle patches stand up to abuse from ski edges and boots, and the thigh vent zips help you dump heat when you’re skinning up to the ridge. Norrøna also added a thigh cargo pocket and interior stash pocket for your small essentials.

  • Backcountry.com is the exclusive US retailer for Norrøna products

Bottom Line: Gore-Tex performance with a relaxed, freeride fit.

Will the Narvik pants zip into the Lofoten jacket? Also, which is the baggier / looser fit, the Lofoten, the Roldal or the Narvik pant, as I'm tossing up between them?

Yes, it'll zip to the jacket. The loosest one is the Lofoten. Roldal and Narvik are identical, except that Roldal is insulated.

What size should I get and what is the material like(stiff, crinkly, lighter/heavier, durable)?

195 lbs, 6'2", athletic, looking for baggy fit but not ballooning in ass and waist.

Other pant sizing comparisons for me:
Arcteryx Stingray-L is too narrow/short, XL is too fat in ass and still could be longer
Burton AK-L would be perfect if they came 2" or more longer.
Patagonia Powder Bowl-L is good fit, could be a little baggier
This years Orage Gordon in XL is a perfect fit.

How would this pant compare too the others in sizing? L or XL?

Thank you

Great Pants

By:
December 1, 2010

I've used these for a few mountaineering adventures and they are great. It's been wet and warmer so I've tended to use them directly over a baselayer.

The vents work really well. The zippers move well and are easy to use even with gloves on.

The included gaiters work pretty decently but for deep snow a pair of OR Crocs would still be warranted. The reinforced ankles have saved me from a few crampon holes. I'm generally very careful but have managed to poke one hole in them about an inch above where the reinforced part cuts off.

These pants wear pretty large. I'm 6ft and a muscular 180lbs. I have a medium and they have plenty of room, even in the thighs which is rare for me with outdoor gear.

Compared to the Arc'teryx Beta AR, I see a few differences. The Beta AR is made from Gore Pro-Shell, these are made with Performance, which is a less breathable/durable Gore product. Arc'teryx Beta AR pants also use full length side zips for max ventilation and putting on over boots. Kevlar insteps patches on the Beta AR add huge durability. Lastly, and this may answer your last question. 5 year warranty on the Norrona; Lifetime warranty on the Beta AR.

These pants have a great articulated fit without looking like you are going to climb Everest after you get off the ski hill. Not that they could not stand up to the rigors of high altitude abuse, because surely they can with the Gore Tex XCR 3 layer fabric and heavily reinforced ankle patches, but let's face it, we don't always want to LOOK like we are Everest-bound... even though we may want the tech that goes ALONG with being Everest-bound. Anyways, a solid purchase from a solid company. It is amazing to me that Norrona has not blown up as much as they should have here in the States, but the secret may be out of the bag now so get em while they are hot....

These pants are Gore-Tex XCR 3L. They are a hardshell material and are not insulated. They are articulated and the cut is great. They are more of a freeride cut, as opposed to say an alpinist cut, but they are not overly baggy. They do zip into all compatible Norrona jackets. I have the Stranda and it is a well thought out zip in/zip out/zipp off attachment that goes on the ski pants and into the jacket.
