The Norrna Men's Lofoten Jacket isn't messing around. Its Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric guarantees you'll stay dry while you're out there glutting on powder. This ultra-lightweight, extremely waterproof shell keeps you drier than Tupperware, but it breathes deeply so you don't feel like a clammy slab of leftover lasagna after a few laps on your splitboard. The Lofoten's long venting zips cool you down when your temperature climbs, and they also allow access to your mid-layer's pockets. Norrona's zip-seal system lets you attach this fully taped jacket to your Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro Shell Pants.

  • PLEASE NOTE: This garment is regular fit and runs true to size
  • Backcountry.com is the exclusive US retailer for Norrøna products

Bottom Line: The Norrna Lofoten Shell lets you get your fill of snowwithout feeling it in your jacket.

lofoten vs alpha sv. I was looking into this jacket and was going to decide between this and the arcteryx alpha sv. First off, I know the alpha sv is specifically made for climbing, and the lofoten for snow sports. Im looking for a jacket to use (mainly for snow sports) so I was thinking the lofoten is the clear choice. The only reson why im leaning towards the alpha sv is because of the face fabric. I want a jacket that is light and at the same time durable. Does the alpha SV have a thicker denier fabric than the lofoten? also for sizing, im 5'11" 125 lbs (pretty slim) and was wanting an alpha sv xs. since the lofoten is only provided in a small and not xs, would the small be to big? I also would like to use the jacket for other seasons, and not just winter which i know the powder skirt is removable with the lofoten which is a plus. If anyone would like to put their feed back who has owned one of these jackets, let me know please :)

Insanely bomber gear.

By:
December 28, 2010

Recently went all out and picked up the Lofoten jacket and pants and could not be happier with my selection. Starting with the fit... I'm a very athletic build 5'10"/ 5'11" and these are cut almost perfectly for me in the small size; not too baggy but still allowing for complete range of motion wherever I need. The zip in capabilities between the pant and jacket are priceless in the deep and also provide for a huge variety of options for the varying conditions while still allowing for the needed mobility. The durability is also excellent. I thrash the trees on the regular typically taking very tight lines and coming in contact with lots of branches, other than a a few dirty smudges the Lofoten has deflected everything I've thrown at it so far. Top pockets are very roomy and the vents are super functional, as well as being easy to reach with gloved hands. The hood is very roomy and adjustable and big enough to go over a helmet. The only small gripe I have is that the central zipper frequently snags while trying to zip up; minor. Overall, the jacket is light, bombproof, easy to see, and super functional. The only thing that makes it better is combining it with the bib pant.

Staying Toasty on a Chilly Morning at Fruhstuckplatz

By:
October 12, 2010

Lofoten Pro shells from head to toe keep Dan warm on a pretty cold and clear morning on the approach to Finsteraarhorn, Berner Alps. The breathability is key when it comes to keeping your head out of the windy chill while booting it up lots of vertical meters on the ascent.

Hi there ,
purple is one of my fav. colours ,

Does anyone know if the hood sports a firm ridgid brim -
to protect ones face and eyeglasses in rain and blizzard.

Also will it turn well with just a wool hat underneath (no helmet),
So that my head does not swivel - while the hood stays in place.

The cut looks very long , though .
As i do telemark skitouring/resort , if cut longer than mid butt ,
the jackets can prevent getting in the low enough turn stance.

Thanks a bunch. =P

This jacket is great for skiing. I wear it for touring and the hood cinches down really well with just a hat on. The brim is pretty firm but not as much as my Helly Hansen jacket. I haven't had a problem with it protecting my face or eyes. The cut is somewhat long but not too long. I have found it to be comfortable and if you need to shorten it, there is a waist cinch that you can tighten. This is the prefect jacket for skiing just make sure you get the right size. It has been absolutely bombproof this year (I skied in Alaska, Austria and my home town in NH). I'm an athletic 6'1 185lbs and the size large is absolutely perfect. This is the best jacket I have ever owned and I highly recommend it.

Lofoten Goretex Pro Shell size L

By:
December 7, 2010

I have the Jacket and pants in large. I am 6'2", 195 pounds. My waist around the belly button at the fattest part is 38.5 inches. My hips would be..maybe a 34 to 36. I have an Athletic build, while far from a six pack. In the picture I'm wearing full length leg and upper body crash pads (half inch to inch thick foam pads all over), long underwear, and ski boots. (What I ski and snowboard in) I wear a 34/34 in jeans to a 36/34. I'm always in between sizes on every thing I've ever tried. This suit fits me very well. I took 11 pictures. Forgive my (not-a-model) looks and form. Backcountry appears to only let me upload 1 picture at a time. I can squat, bend and flex, in any fashion without feeling tightness. If I were more over weight with a relaxed gut over 40 inches, this suit would be too tight in the gut, but still long enough in the arms and legs. I asked my wife to be critical and she said the arms are perfect, but the coat and legs might be a hair short... but it could go either way based on preference.I am NOT lean or skinny. I have wide shoulders and big bones. I would say the fit of a large on my frame is athletic, not baggy. If you want baggy, go one size up. I think this suit is true to size and a near perfect fit, and I am HARD to fit. If you are not overweight or large framed, do NOT go one size up. I love the fit and finish of the jacket and pants. It is warm for only a shell. I have not been on the slopes yet to fully test it. My suggestions for improvement: I wish the hood was removable, however I am satisfied with how small and out of the way it can be made with the pull cords. I don't think the hand gators are tough enough too last long, but we will find out. Feel free to email me at gabrielnobles at yahoo dot com if you have questions.

Mountains or even Jungles

By:
November 30, 2010

I've had this coat for almost a year now and have been thoroughly impressed. It has been through ski, to mountaineering, to the jungle with me. The Lofoten summitted Mt Marcy with me in whiteout conditions in January 2010, and kept me dry in the rains in the Central American jungle in August 2010. The coat packs down well and stuffed into my backpack no problem and is lightweight.

The only issue I would say is that it's cut quite trim. Had ordered a medium originally which fit fine, but close (I'm 6', 175 lbs), and was too snug to put a down layer under it. Returned it for a large, backcountry.com's return policy is great and no issues.

Good stuff, sizing varies

By:
December 7, 2010

I have tried a few Norrona technical shells (thanks to BC for outstanding return policy). Great quality stuff, but sizing is tricky. The chart for Norrona is generic and I think refers to body size. Actual garment dimensions vary quite a bit, presumably based on design/usage considerations. I am 6' 4", 195#. I compared the actual garments to see how they differed.

Lofoten is probably the best fit for me for skiing, with longer arms and body, and athletic fit; I liked how the XL fit, if they had any good colors left; L is a little too trim for insulation.

Falketind is the trimmest model I tried, very slim, and shorter in body. Falketind XL is quite a bit smaller than the Lofoten XL in body width and length, and also shorter sleeve length.

My favorite in terms of quality build is the Trollveggen (pro shell version). Best fabric, great zippers, designed for mountaineering. It's a technical fit, but Trollveggen L is wider than Lofoten L, almost exactly the same as Lofoten XL. The Trollveggen L is a good fit for me in the body, but I wouldn't mind the sleeves a touch longer. The front on the Trollveggen is short, designed for harness access, which may not be ideal for skiing. There is a long drop back hem.

I didn't compare to the soft shells or insulated models. I do own the Svalbard soft shell in XL, which is one of my all time favorite jackets for less intense ventures.

What would be great would be a Norrona garment measurement chart by model and size. I had one once from Arcteryx years ago, and it was interesting how different the specs were between models.

I ended up with an XL. Couldn't be happier with the fit and features for skiing. The sulphur color's actually not bad, if you don't mind standing out--more of an Oregon Ducks nouveau yellow-green neon, not canary like in picture.

Lofoten is more suited for touring and generally everyone who sweats a fair bit when skiing. Narvik series usually are made with the goretex softshell stuff which generally doesn't transport moisture as well, but keeps you warmer. Thus, it is meant for lift accessed skiing mostly.

Fantastic jacket

By:
January 31, 2010

Just skied this for the first time at Alta, Utah, in stormy weather and deep powder conditions - and it's fantastic. The shell is light and supple giving you free movement and keeping the weather out. The hood wraps nicely around your chin so you can hunker down out of the storms and the wrist cuffs (although seemingly a little flimsy) keep the weather out too. I used to own an Arcteryx Stingray jacket, which was good, but I rate this jacket above it if you want a "shell only" option, mostly due to it's freedom of movement and longer length. Great styling just adds to the finish. Definitely my favorite ski jacket of all time.

Love this jacket

By:
November 9, 2010

I'm guesssing that I've logged at least 150-200 winter days in my Lofoten, and I still love it. Keeps me warm and dry, looks good, and the fit is perfect (I'm 6'3" and 180lbs and use a L. XL would fit, but baggier than I prefer).

For me, durability has been excellent. I've had to fix two minor holes that were totally my own fault. Apart from that, the jacket looks almost like new, only some minor chafing in the neck. Oh, and the lettering fell off (mine is an old version where it was painted on), but who cares.

I will be buying this jacket again, but I'd prefer it if they left out the hand gaiters.

Crazy light, but Super Bomb Proof!!

By:
February 18, 2010

Just used jacket (cavier w/ green zippers, XL) for first time and was blown out of my mind with Lofoton jacket. Its super light weight and almost felt like nothing was there. The 3 ply gore-tex is hands down the best for keeping out wet snow and water, plus this jacket breaths great. After a quick twenty minute side step I unzipped to dump moisture and heat. I just had on a base layer thermal for the 15 degree day on mountain and a mid layer would be too much. Simple but with lots of thought put into the making of this product. I went with a XL because I can not stand the tight fit and this fits me great, but not being to baggy (5'9". 200 lbs). Sleeves are super long and work great with the hand panties and longer upper cuff. I tore through some tight tight pines at high speeds and the fabric took the beating and did not show any signs of failure. I HIGHLY recommend this jacket for the perfect outter shell, layer with a thermal and a mid layer and this is the perfect set up for those bitter cold days below zero.

Review Title

By:
September 23, 2009

Just got mine on Monday, XXL Olympian Blue. It's a Gore-Tex 3L Pro Shell, so you already know its guaranteed waterproof and breathable. The things that sets this jacket apart are:1) The fit: great athletic fit that still has long wide arms and a long torso. Huge hood that fits over a helmet or adjusts to smaller sizes.2) The color. The Olympian Blue is really sharp and different than than anything I've seen.3) The media pocket is designed well.4) Removable skirt, not uncommon but awesome for reducing bulk when you're not on the mountain. My only complaint is that it doesn't have handwarmer pockets. Other than that, this jacket is great and I can't wait to put it to the test.

You can use your mid layer pockets as handwarming pockets by zipping up your lower ventialtion zips in the Lofoten Pro. The jacket was constructed with this purpose.

I've seen the reviews and read great things about this jacket but just wanted some advice on sizing...I'm 5'8" tall with an average build and about a 38 in chest. Looking at the sizing I would say a 'true' fit would be small but concerned that small would be too tight, especially if i've got (non-bulky) layering on underneath. Would Medium be better, not too baggy? Any thoughts/advice?

Thanks!

Bye bye Arc'Teryx

By:
August 5, 2010

I got this jacket by pure luck on steepandcheap. Didn't know the brand, didn't know the Lofoten specifics. It looked great, and my old hardshell needed replacement, so I went for it.
I've loved this jacket ever since it came out of the box. The fit was spot on, the material bomb proof and the attention to detail makes me grin every time. The gore-tex pro shell is light, stretchy, and totally waterproof. Instead of snowboarding, I zipped off the powder skirt (80grams or so) and took it climbing in the Alps. The pockets work well with a backpack, and the stretch made sure I wasn't restricted while making my way up the peaks. Despite weighing next to nothing, they fitted a bunch of pockets, zips, and some very fascinating, thin, grid-structure fleece which keeps you suspiciously warm. Its not cheap, but the Norwegians know their stuff...

To confirm what I wrote last year, everything that was previously printed is now embroidered, so no worries anymore about the print coming off either!

Fantastic Jacket

By: Backcountry.com Employee
February 19, 2010

I've got 22 days in this jacket so far and it's awesome! It's kept me bone dry on powder days at the bird and rainy days off the mountain. Despite the light weight the jacket is solidly constructed, it's taken a beating from trees and a few exposed rocks early in the season. The wrist gaiters and removable powder skirt keep the snow out and the thoughtfully placed vents and breath-ability of this shell keeps you dry and warm inside too. I wear it with a synthetic insulating layer, merino base layer and t-shirt and have yet to get cold on the slopes.

Check the sizing chart carefully. I'm 5'10 and 170 and the medium fits slim on me.
