Built with a highly breathable, waterproof membrane, the Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Active Shell Jacket shields your core from winter's worst while allowing you to skin up steep tracks with greater comfort. When the blizzard starts to fly, the Gore-Tex membrane and taped seams seal out the onslaught so you feel fully protected. An asymmetrical front zip stays out of the way of your winter beard, and the trim athletic cut minimizes bulk for a sleek fit.

  • Gore-Tex 3L Active Shell fabric is built with the the same legendary waterproof protection as other Gore-Tex fabrics but with a lower weight and greater breathability
  • DWR coating encourages water and melting snow to bead up on the fabric’s surface without affecting the garment’s overall breathability
  • Fully taped seams mean water won’t roll down the shell and sneak in through the fabric joints
  • Articulated elbows mimic the normal anatomical shape of your arms and provide greater freedom of movement
  • Asymmetrical front zip plays nice with your chin; waterproof zips block rain and snow from sneaking in
  • Trim athletic fit minimizes bulk and weight for high-output alpine adventures

Great Jacket

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

As others have said, this is a great, lightweight & waterproof shell. One thing to be aware of (that surprised me) is that it does not have traditional side pockets. It does have a large chest pocket, inside pocket, and arm pocket so it's not a big deal for me. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find a clip-in goggle wipe in the front chest pocket. About the fit, this Jacket definitely has more of an athletic fit, which is perfect for me. I am 5-11, 170lbs and a Large fits great (sleeves are bit long but a medium would be too tight around the upper body, especially with layering underneath.) The under-arm zip vents are also massive (compared to most North Face jackets I have had) which is great for warmer spring days.

Love it!

Great shell, put it through the wringer skiing for a long weekend in Canada over the holidays and it still looks brand new. Kept me perfectly dry, blocked the wind, couldn't ask for more. Fits nicely, I'm 5'9" 165lbs and ordered a medium. I could easily layer a fleece underneath but yet it didn't look or feel baggy. Was a good athletic fit. Look forward to a long life out of this jacket.

Decent jacket

I love the jacket. It is incredible at breathing and keeping me dry.

I do wish they would have put on detachable hand sleeves in the cuff.

I am 6'2'' 160lbs and the length is a little short although it covers my butt.

Also, I wish the jacket wasn't as accommodating to a beer belly.

    It could be way slimmer.

regardless super waterproof, ridiculously light and packable. and great on the go adjustment with the hood

    Purchased the Wrong Size

I tried to push my luck and bought an XL (I'm 6'1", 180, athletic build)... Too large. Returned it and purchased the Narvik in L, fits perfectly. Love the athletic fit and the Narvik jacket - star rating for the Narvik but assume the quality is equivalent.

Lesson learned, follow Norrona's sizing chart and buy Scandanavian if you have an athletic build. Thank god for clothing not designed for the obese.

      Quite Nice

      • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

      Very breathable,full waterproof and (feather)light.

Its very cool for side or backcountry skiing. The wrists velcros are not the best, and sometimes snow flows in, but overall its a great jacket and I'm stoked with it. I weared it for a whole winter of skiing and its still in very good state. I highly recommend it.

Greatness thwarted by one big flaw..

      • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

I've chosen to give this jacket only 3 stars, i.e. a "adequate for the job" and it's all because of one flaw.

I just bought this jacket and I must say i'm soooooo disappointed by the design of the armpit ventilation zippers.

I've been using arc'teryx for years now, because the last time I bought a jackets, Norrøna were going mental with the colours.

Since I am of Norwegian heritage I was hoping to return to Norrøna once again, but what the f**k Norrøna!?!

You've put in long zippers, but instead of zipping out from the middle like e.g. arcteryx, your zipper opens from the edges. "Arcteryx design" gives you the opportunity to decide where and how big you want your ventilation opening to be. This is extremely useful in wet conditions.

Your's on the other hand will just either give me a wet upper body or a wet arm.. I am sad to say that I will return this jacket (my first returned product ever, as I usually can't be bothered) and will probably buy a new Arcteryx jacket..

You should have used some minutes of those two years of fabric testing to evaluate your design. It took me 10 sec from i received the jacket till i realized the flaw. Shame on you!!

Greatness thwarted by one big flaw..

I will have to disagree with you a little. The armpit zippers allow to dump excess heat, and the 2 zippers allow you to control exactly how much and where. I find this feature very practical and have no complaints at all. In fact, i find Arc'teryx jackets to be inferior toNorrona's or Peak Performance, as they allow for less movement and have generally weirder fit. As for the colors, it is always safer to go with visible colors, when in the backcountry. I dig the flashy stuff, but most men I know would prefer it toned down and stay away from that "Hello Kitty" PINK (that they had last season).

How the jacket generally fit you depends on the person, and will be pointless to discuss.

How you can prefer a ventilation solution that exposes either your arm or side is beyond me. With Norrona's solution the opening will ALWAYS have to start from one of the ends. Don't you get it? Should you for some reason prefer such a impractical way of dumping heat, arcteryx' gives you that option, but not the other way around. Arcteryx also have two zippers, but you make the opening between them. This is the best option.

I'd like to say that I have no stocks in Arc'teryx, nor do I sell any of their product them. I find the brand overpriced for most products, but their gore-tex jackets are not one of them. They are worth it.

I've referred to it as the arcteryx solution here, because I know they have it. I'm sure a lot of other brands have the same, as it is the only logical thing to do.

I get your point and it is really obvious from your picture as well. I just never had a problem with Norrna's solution of the armpit zippers and I use their jackets a lot. You are right about the fit. I happen to be tall and slim and hate the short torso length and sleeve length of Arc'teryx jackets, they always ride up and just don't work for me at all. So i am really greatful for Norrna and Mammut and some others.

I disagree with you completely when it comes to the ventilation. I'm as angry with everyone who don't make their ventilation like on this jacket. For me this is the best ventilation period. I really hate it the other way aroud. Since most people wear a backpack when in nature and not running it's way easier to use the ventilation. I love the fact that I can open it a little bit both in the arm and at my side when skiing or hiking up something, for me it's a no go if I can't, i sweat to much.
As for sizing I'm 178cm 73kg and large is perfect I think, I must be able to fit a back protector or a small puffy underneath without noticing any restiction in movement =)

      Very light shell!

Very light and comfortable, not the most practical zipper, but looks really cool. I want to make everybody, that is considering it in bamboo color, aware that the green is much more intense than on computer monitor. I would describe it more like "spring lawn". On my screen it has a slight minty hue to it. Still very good color, just not quite as shown online.

Every computer monitor has the potential to display different color shades of the same picture. Your experience with the color can not be relayed to other users as the common denomiator is your monitor setup and not BC.com's picture.

All other Norrona colors look the same or almost the same in person...but this one... So maybe it is not just MY computer/Ipad color settings. Also, it is Norrona's picture...same as their official website. I just wanted to point out, you cannot always trust colors on the screen, for others to be aware when buying online...

        Backcountry skiers Dream Jacket.

I work as a ski guide and have never found such a well cut light weight jacket as this one. Perfection is the first words that come to mind when I think of this jacket. Super light, great cut with full mobility, super durable for a light weight jacket, Full on protection from the harshest of weather. Packs down to nothing and feels as comfortable as your favorite hooded sweatshirt. The best all around ski jacket on the market period!!!

Will it ever be possible to buy anything from backcountry.com and have it shipped to continental Europe? (f.ex Norway).

I'd save myself over $200 on buying a Norrna jacket here compared to at a store here in Norway...

          Hey Joakim,

Thanks for the question. We are working on being able to ship more brands outside of the USA. Unfortunately the decision is made by the vendor and not us. For the time being a great way to get the gear you want and have it sent to Europe is to ship it to a USA address and have the package sent on to you from there.

I'm looking for a 3 season shell for rain...

I'm looking for a 3 season shell for rain and wet snow. Something to take climbing, backpacking and hiking on days it might rain. Would this work or is this more skiing and snow centric jacket? If so, other Norrona suggestions?

This jacket would work very well for what you intend to use it for. The jacket is quite light weight while still offering bomber weather protection. You could use this as a ski jacket but in the fall, spring, or summer you could remove the powder skirt and use this as a shell to keep wind and water/snow off of you while hiking, climbing, or any outdoor activity for that matter. The athletic fit is not baggy but does allow room for layers under.

how warm is it in below zero temps?

how warm is it in below zero temps?

          Barb,

The Norrona Lofoten Gore-Tex Active Shell Jacket is a hardshell jacket without any built-in insulation. The Gore-tex Active Shell outer is waterproof and breathable, so it will keep you shielded from wind and moisture, but the warmth factor is really up to you.

To answer your question little more directly: yes, this jacket will keep you comfortable in sub zero temps if you layer under it properly. To create that warmth I would suggest a high-loft fleece (e.g. the Houdini High Loft Full-Zip Fleece Hooded Jacket) or a lightweight down (e.g. the Norrona Lyngen Down Jacket).

Does this jacket have any insulation? Even just the the fleece looking stuff? Thanks!

From the pictures this jacket looks like...

From the pictures this jacket looks like it holds its shape and has more rigid fabric than most active/paclite shells out there. Any thoughts from owners out there if this is true.

          Thanks.

Hello Will the sale Norrna Lofoten Gore-Tex Active Shell Jacket - Men's in the color True Purple?

They only put in one order /year with Norrona, so what they have is what they have. When they run out of inventory they do not get anymore. The Active shell unfortunately does not come in a purple color this year. Your best shot is the Lofoten Pro Shell which has a purple option or waiting until next season and seeing what they come up with. Every season their colors change a little bit and they offer new colors in many of their concepts every season. I hope that helps.

Are there waterproof ratings available for this jacket? I see it is 'guaranteed water proof' but...

I don't have numbers, but from personal experience, I can share that I have had this jacket in very warm powder dumps and at the end of the day, I am not wetted out like some cheaper Gortex jackets I have had in the past. In comparison with Patagonias H2No2 jackets and event fabrics, this is going to be the most waterproof jacket I have found, and again it does not soak up like other materials and breathes amazing.

per the size chart XXL = 46? Really? How true to size do these run?

Norrona clothing is spot on. The only issue I have had with their sizing was their canvas clothing, and that is only in regards to their pants. I have always found their tops to be spot on. This jacket is designed to layer up, so don't be surprised if it has a little extra room, but that is how it should fit. I am going to throw a disclaimer out there and say I wear mediums, so I have much personal experience shopping for L and up but I do know as a medium sized consumer I have an incredibly hard time shopping for equipment these days and will say that Norrona is probably the best fitting outdoor clothing retailer there is. I hope that helps.

As of today all prices of new norrona gear went up 10%, which now makes the norrona website cheaper and that is with with $20 shipping to u.s. and duties. WTF?

          Hi Kara,

No scam going on (Norrona's site does not account for tax & duty so when you look at their site it's misleading)...just the unfortunate cost of getting this stuff into the US from Europe for our customers (we are the only US retailer you can get it from on the web or in a brick n' mortar).

Thanks for your question Kara & for your involvement in community!

          Cheers,

Does this jacket fit a 5'11" 160lb person with a belly? What size would you recommend?
How is the articulated elbow tailoring work? Does the fabric stick out like the picture of the blue version (not on the yellow if only looking at the pic)

hey man, this jacket doesnt balloon around your waist like most of the other jackets will. ex: flylow quantum jacket. Given this, I'm 6'1, 195 34 in the waist and this jacket fits so damn well in a large. It falls straight down around the waist which is a nice touch. the fabric will stick out when your sitting down but its pretty flat when your standing. plenty of room in the arms, but again, its no parachute. I would recommend this jacket without at doubt, 9 out of 10 easily. Flylow quantum 6 out of 10.
