You can officially eat lutefisk in these

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

Norrona says medium waist is 34.6-36.6. I returned mediums even though I tape at 36. Got some larges in return. They fit much better and have Velcro adjustment tabs on the waist for when you drink too much beer or download the burrito combo meal. The right cargo pocket has 1 elastic organizer pocket within it and it Fits iPhone 5s with commuter box nicely. I like the security of the zippered pockets front and rear and they open smoothly with one hand. Front cargo pockets have small pleat on the bottom corner for extra storage, which is roomy enough for multi day hikes, but slim enough for moving fast. Hand pockets are small. Nice lightweight shorts that come down just below knee. 2 Metal snaps for closure- no buttons to break off. Appear to be well built with some extra tack points. Standby for durability report...

Great for manly men.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

My husband hates wearing shorts because he doesn't like showing off his legs, but with the warm weather his pants are getting too hot. This was a great compromise. These shorts go over his knees which I think were the part of his legs that he really didn't like showing off and the fabric is super comfy which keeps him cool.

Awesome hiking shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Now that I have finally been able to snag a pair of Norrona shorts in my size, I feel like I'm part of some exclusive club. Time and time again I've browsed through the Norrona shorts only to see XL sizes left in stock.
These shorts are pretty awesome. They're packed full of technical features that really make these the obvious choice for hiking/backpacking.

I'm about 5'7 and 135lbs. I ordered the small and they fit great. The material is heavier than I expected, but feels very durable and breathable. Construction seems very solid as well.

While these are perfect for hitting the trail, there's a few things that I think could have been thought out better.
There are 7 pockets on these shorts which is great. The back pockets are lower than normal, which lets you use them while you have a backpack/harness on. The right zipper pocket has a slot for your cell phone too, which actually does a great job at keeping it in place. The thing is- the pockets are all a little too tight! The back pockets are hard to fit a wallet in, and the hand pockets have small openings.
The shorts aren't gusseted either, which I thought was strange for a pair of hiking shorts.
I don't find myself making too many high steps while I'm out backpacking/hiking, but I really wish I could use these as climbing shorts too.
These really work great when it's time to hit the trail, but improvements could definitely be made to make these a more versatile pair of shorts.
Also, it's probably worth mentioning that I ordered the cool black, and they're really more of a dark gray color.

I'm really sad that these will no longer be stocked at backcountry.com, considering they say they're the exclusive US retailer for Norrona.

I was looking for a longer short that's not too baggy, and these look perfect. Unfortunately, barely any sizes/colors are left.

Since it looks like I won't be able to pick these up (no time to wait for an order from Norway), if anyone has any suggestions of alternatives for longer / not baggy shorts, please do tell.

Cool

I usually wear 33 or 34 waist size pants. I got these shorts in Large and they fit well. Usually I wear a belt but with the hook-and-loop straps I didn't have to.

The material is thicker than my Arc'teryx Ramparts and Paliasade shorts but the Norrona still felt great. They weren't hot at all.

I would say the they are quite long. They cover the knees and are a bit baggy.

I got mine in "Too Blue" which are intensely blue/cyan. In an endless display of olive and khaki colored pants and shorts on the trails, these livens things up.

Note that there are two zippered pockets on the back as well, but the zippers are mounted very low. It's a design choice I don't mind.

I'll definitely buy more Norrona products.

All Star shorts

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm 6'1 and 180. I wear mediums because I like my fit to be unrestrictive but close. If you like your shorts baggy then size up.
I use my shorts for almost everything, whether it be trekking, cycling or just around town. The pockets are well sized and placed too.
Their lightweight is one of the best things about them, but they are still really tough.
I little pricey but I've had them a year and they look good as new, even after a month in Nepal!
Love them.

This are great shorts, could be better if they were just an inch longer, but have used them for more than a year and never failed me

nice, but short

Nice, comfortable shorts. My new go to shorts for biking. Length is a little short, even when standing doesn't quite reach the knee. Small fits well for me, 5'11", 147lbs.

These look cool. You only have a Small size though, what about L in both colors?

Hey,

Unfortunately it doesn't look like we are getting anymore in stock, sorry for the inconvenience.

Tight in the Butt

I would love these if my butt weren't bubbalicious. They will be great after I lose a little trunk space.

Great Shorts

I don't review often, but I have to say, these shorts are legit. Due to my love for this product, I now own two pairs of these shorts (one of each color). I am about 5 feet 11 inches and weigh approximately 170 lbs. The mediums fit like a glove and they're extremely tough. I would say they're perfect for backpacking, swimming, biking, or whatever outside activity you choose. I was a big fan of the Prana Zion short, but due to the style change this year, these are my new go to shorts.

We will not have these back in stock until next spring. ETA date for the order is 3/15, but I would count on them being late.

Every day in summer

Used these shorts pretty much every day this summer. Very comfortable, I like the hip adjustment with Velcro. And I do like the pockets placement similar to Norrona's skiing pants.

Spent one week hiking in the Dolomites with these. Perfect pockets, map in left cargo pocket and Iphone/Android phone in the internal pocket in right cargo pocket.

I'm a 34 inch waist. I have ordered skiing pants from Norrona in the past. The M was a little too snug and the L had the desired relaxed fit. What size should I wear? The sizing chart on this brand is crazy!

Based on other reviewers description of the Fit of these, your experience with them and my own experience with norrona, I would go with a L. If it doesnt work out or you need a size swap, the backcountry guarantee and service make it easy. Good luck!

THe best I've tried

Paid full price, and consider the quality in-line with the $80 ticket. I'd say they are exceed arc'teryx in stitching and general quality. The fit far exceeds any of the synthetic shorts I own. I never buy 100% nylon in a casual fit, as they always end up being thigh-huggers. These do not hug the thigh at all, unlike the arc'teryx ramparts, et al.

The blue-contrasting zippers and logo look great. Zippers are of very high quality. The inside belt is attached with velcro and works perfectly; there are belt loops, but you won't need 'em.

If you're interested in the look but shy from 100% nylon... don't. You will love these.

Feels true to size. I am 6'2", 37" waist and am wearing the XLs.

Responded on

Considering how yours fit you, do you think a large would fit a 34in waist? I was going to buy a large, but the size chart says I should buy a medium, which doesn't seem right. I'm 6'3 200. Thanks!

Responded on

Hey! I am also a size 34 (actually a 33 waist line when measured) and the L is the best fit. The size chart suggested an M though, but after having a chat with one of the gear guys I changed my order to an L. The shorts came about 3 days ago and the L fits really comfortably. I just pulled the waist tabs in a bit and do not need a belt at all. They also have enough room incase i have to squat down to pick something up or so on. The M would have been way too small. I am 5,9 and 198lbs. Hope this helps?

Norrona's size chart shows 44 chest...

Norrona's size chart shows 44 chest corresponding to a 41" waist. I am a 48" chest, 38" waist (220, 6'2"). What size would I order?

Responded on

You would need a large.

Responded on

I'm almost the same size as you, and have tried both L and XL in Norrona. They are European fit, so if your legs are slim L might work. XL may be somewhat big in the waist, but perhaps a better fit elsewhere. I wasn't able to keep the Norrona pants since I am right betweeen L and XL. I did keep a Norrona softshell, and went for an XL; I would never have been be able to get the L on. Great products otherwise.

Responded on

Thanks Ratherbe. I got the XL in both colors and they're fantastic. I am really closer to 37" and they're a perfect fit. I am normally hesitant to buy 100% nylon, but they don't hug the thigh at all.
