How to Buy Nordic Touring Boots

The Most Important Gear You Can Buy
How to Buy Nordic Touring Binding

If you're going to spend time worrying about anything, worry about your boots; not only do they let you control your skis, but they keep your feet warm, dry, and blister free. To help you move the extra weight of a touring ski, nordic touring boots are warmer, heavier, and burlier than race-oriented Nordic boots. Boots with plastic and carbon components are more powerful, but many skiers still swear by flexible leather/synthetic boots—both can be heavily or lightly insulated. Size your nordic touring boot much like the way you size a comfortable running shoe and keep in mind that the sizing between brands can vary a little. There’s a good chance you’ll want to wear heavier socks for warmth and cushioning, so consider boots with a touch of extra space at the midfoot and toe.

Construction:

Leather tends to be softer, plastic support structures stiffer, and insulation often varies. Lace covers and gaiters help keep water out, while higher cuffs provide more support.

Closure:

Traditional lacing offers fine adjustability from ankle to toe, while a ratcheting system makes it quick and easier to dial in a close fit. Boots with lace overlays use an additional zipper closure to keep the laces protected.
