Looking for a surf/tide watch? LOOK NO FURTHER

This watch is sick! I get compliments all the time -- from random kids in my university classes, not surfers or sailors. The tides are on the money and accurate for just about any spot you'd want to surf at...even if the exact beach isnt there, you'll be able to get a very good idea of the tides (i.e. Santa Catalina is under Panama Pacific...). The main reason I give such a good review, aside from the style and awedome DUAL!!! tide function is NIXON -- they are a top notch company and when my first Lodown had an issue after a year of heavy use offshore sailing and surfing, they replaced it at no charge no questions asked -- after I mailed it in with a check for a new battery etc. AWESOME. If you're looking for a tide watch, this is the one.

I surf and I am a seafarer. I could not get to see if the tides were accurate as the dam thing never work. I had to return it 3x times for replacement until I finally took a store credit from the surf shop I bought it from. Brush it!

I have taken mine around the world from Australia/NZ to the Caribbean and to Asia and have always been able to find beaches near me. Not sure about a specific list anywhere but hope this helps.

I am trying to buy a surf watch for my boyfriend and I have found several that say they have pre-set tide data for selected beaches... but how do I know which beaches? Are the beaches he surfs included? I don't want to buy him a watch with info about tides at beaches that are nowhere near where he is surfing.

I have seen a few watches that have "ATS (automatic tide system)," which says that you can SET tides to thousands of beaches. Is that what I want? Does the Nixon Lodown watch have this feature?

Hi Leah,
I have the Nixon Super Hero SS tide watch (http://www.dogfunk.com/snowboard/Nixon-Super-Hero-II-SS-Watch-Mens/NIX0537M.html) and it has the same 200 preset beaches as the Lodown. I was living in Cape Cod, MA when I purchased the watch and like you I had reservations about whether one of 200 international surf breaks would make the cut. Well, it turns out it did not...but it really did not matter. There were three beaches within a fairly close distance (a beach in NH, Nantucket Island and a beach in RI). All I did was look online at local tide charts and find the variance in minutes between the exact tide at my beach versus a nearby beach and referenced that beach. It turned out it was only a few minutes behind in time so instead of my exact high/low tide being at noon for example, it was at 12:03pm. Pretty easy fix. Not to mention that it takes quite some time for the tide to actually turn so three minutes (or even 30 for that matter) is not a very big deal at most breaks.

I have traveled internationally with that watch and have used the tide function all over the globe. It is MUCH easier to just reference famous beach's tides rather than trying to calculate out every single place you intend to use it.

So in conclusion, I actually preferred the preset tides even though it initially took about 5 minutes to get dialed in on my present location.

Hope that helps!!!

Is the dual time military or two different time zones. I need the two different time zone feature as my son travels to several different countries. What other Nixon watches have the two different time zone features.

Responded on

It is different time zones for the dual function. You can also access the settings to change between military time/ non-military time. I know the older Nixon Tide watches also have the dual time zone, such as the Outsider Tide (older model) Hope this helps!

Durable Tide Watch

Great Surf Watch. Tides are on track, but forecasting is a little difficult if you're tying to plan a trip a few months out.. You're better off using the internet in this case. But if you need to know when the tide push is for your dawn session, look no further - it's easy to read. The Titanium face gets good compliments on a regular basis, too.

This was and still is my surf watch and I've had no issue with saltwater corrosion or leaky housing. The band fits well, doesn't stretch over time and doesn't grow the funk either. A little fresh water rinse does it good.

Worth every penny. I've dropped this a few times right on the face, and no cracks!

Update to Lowdown!!!

As you can tell from a few reviews, we were having some issues with the Lodown.

When we launched this watch we wanted to use better quality materials than the current tide watches on the market. We went ahead and used a mineral crystal instead of an acrylic because the mineral is much more durable and scratch resistant. Down the road we found out that the bonding agent used to seal the face to the case was failing, this caused water to leak into the casing. We have since addressed this issue and all Lodowns now have an updated acrylic crystal guaranteed not to leak.

So get off your ass, put on your Lodown, and head out to one of the 200 pre-programmed beaches to catch some lefts....brah.

Love all your reviews dude. I dont think I've ever met or heard of a rep that actually provides as much helpful feedback as you. Keep it up!

I just ordered one of these watches tonight. How do I know it has the updated acrylic crystal that supposedly doesn't leak?
