Niner's extensive carbon and aluminum 29er mountain bike offerings prove that perfection comes from continuous improvement and advancements, But there's also plenty to be said for nailing the fundamentals. The Niner MCR 9 is a 180-degree skidding turn from the tech-slapped wunder machines. The MCR 9 is a frame featuring time-tested steel construction to give you a buttery-smooth and lively ride.

Featuring Reynolds 853 tubing and custom S-bend rear seatstays and chainstays, the MCR 9 flattens rough trails without much heft. The tubing wall thicknesses are tweaked both externally and internally to produce the best possible ride quality for each frame size. Clean TIG welds provide the strength, while short chainstays and a steep head angle offer the maneuverability that tight, twisty trails require. Niner gave the MCR 9 a radically sloping top tube for stand-over clearance. From the beefy tire clearance to the down tube shaped to avoid interference with fork crowns, everything about this frame shows the design time invested.

The MCR 9 will work fine with a 2x10 drivetrain, but Niner recommends not going larger than 26/39 for SRAM, and 28/40 with Shimano. A standard triple will pose no problems. The rear triangle will accommodate a 2.4in tire, and you'll need a 160mm rotor or smaller for the IS brake mount-it's disc specific. You'll also need a bottom pull, top-swing front derailleur with a low-mount 28.6mm clamp. The MCR 9 uses a 27.2mm seatpost, a 73mm BB, and a standard 1-1/8in external headset.

Niner offers the MCR 9 in two colors: Niner Green and Moondust. Four size offerings: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra-Large.
