Description

Detergents can diminish the durable water repellency (DWR) of a technical fabric. Opt for Tech Wash instead.

Use Nikwax Tech Wash to clean and care for your waterproof/breathable garments. Dirt will attract water and reduce the beading-up of droplets on the fabric's surface. Plus, after a couple days out in the backcountry, your shell reeks. Wash the garment in Nikwax Tech Wash non-detergent soap. Detergents can leave water-attractive residues that will not rinse out. They also contain agents that can wash away water-repellent treatments. Never use liquid detergents or fabric softeners. 10 fl oz. (300 ml)

I've used this several times on my technical shells and have been very pleased with the results. My stuff always comes out looking like it's brand new.

You have spent a ton of money on purchasing your gear and now you are going to be too cheap to wash it properly? You bought your gear for all of the qualities it came with, so why not wash it properly and get the most out of your gear?
I love having my gear act as good as new after I wash it. Nikwax products kick ass. I haven't found one yet that doesn't deliver.

Just washed a load of Stoic softshells, Salomon ski jackets, and GoLite down jackets with this. I know Nikwax makes special washes for each of these, but hey, I can't afford $10 loads of laundry. That being said, this product worked well for most of the garments. Softshell jacket and pants- waterproofed! Ski jackets- spick and span! Down jackets....maybe I should have gotten the Down Wash. Despite following the directions to the T, the down came out very clumped up with spots on the fabric, and it hardly cleaned the stains and blackened cuffs.
But for an all-in-one cleaner, I can't complain. Very useful and necessary product if you have multiple technical garments.

I used this to wash my London Fog trench before using the Cotton Proof (see my review there). I had never proofed my trench so I figured it needed a good wash and proofing. The combination of the Tech Wash and Cotton Proof worked awesomely for me. So I am not sure how well this would have worked alone, but for my purposes, it did the trick.

If i am washing ski and snowboard clothing, should I use the Tech Wash first and then the Tx-Direct after or just use one or the other? Some of the gear is new and still has DWR but some of it has lost its water resistance. I don't want to overbuy if I only need one product.

You could use TX-Direct Wash in just once without using Tech Wash, or if you want better results, you could use Tech Wash and then spray the garment with TX-Direct Spray On.

I just used this on my Black Diamond Light House last month before a trip to the Sierra Nevada. Lucky I did because we were caught in a 2 day snow storm at 8k. Very stoked on the beading of the moisture and cleanliness of my tent after washing it.

do you put a certain amount in the machine to make them waterproof? How much of the solution so you need. How much does the solution cost and how big a bottle?

Instructions are on the package. The more garments you watch the more you will use. There are 3-6 loads in a can.

If I use this on my Backcountry.com rime pullover, which is made from Powershield material should I hang dry or use the dryer? Im concerned mostly with breathability not so much for water repellence.

Can this be used safely on a down jacket...

Can this be used safely on a down jacket with DWR treated fabric? I would like to protect the DWR but of course do not wish to damage the delicate down feathers. Thanks!

Best bet is to use Nikwax Down Wash to clean the garment and then treat with Nikwax Down Proof. It's designed to restore DWR on down garments without damaging the down.

How does this compare to Penguin's Sport-Wash?...

How does this compare to Penguin's Sport-Wash? There are claims that it's just as good if not better than Nikwax tech wash.

I have used both, in the end its all about the washing machine, cycle settings, extra rinse, etc... I haven't found many differences between tech soaps, but have in types of DWR replenisher... Stay away from the spray on style for jackets...

Volume guide (take from label)

To clean 1-2 items use 2 full caps (100 ml) in soft water or 3 full caps in hard water. Quantities used will depend on condition and size of items.

At first I was a lil skeptical about this. After I used it my mind was changed. This stuff is GREAT! My high end jackets and pants came out looking brand new. Esp the collar and the cuffs. My jacket smells great now and looks brand new! This is a must to keep your gear tip top.

Can this remove grease stains on hardshell material... e.g. almond butter stain?

This stuff works great on oily or dirty clothing, I don't have specific experience with almond butter, but if the stain is relatively fresh, and your gear hasn't gone through the wash yet, this will remove most of the oil. It may remove the stain altogether, but that is less likely. You'll probably see the best results if you pretreat and scrub the stain before washing, you could use undiluted tech wash for this purpose, or even regular dish detergent.

Hi!
Grease stains are tricky, aren't they?!? One of the best ways to treat them is to soak the affected area in warm water and dish soap (like Dawn). THEN follow up with Tech Wash. Dish soaps are the best at cutting grease and the tech wash will remove any residue left behind by the dish soap. Hope this helps! Thanks for the question! Stay dry! :)

I am very impressed with how well these Nikwax products work. I used the TX Direct spray on in conjunction with the Tech Wash here and it literally transformed the material on my jacket. My 2 year old jacket has had it pretty rough. The material felt coarse and had some fuzziness to the fibers from being flogged so hard. After washing it the material felt smooth and supple again. Very impressed with this product.

I was a little nervous about washing my expensive collection of gear, but I gave this a try anyway. Everything came out great! Got some small stains out of my hardshell jacket and softshell pants. I washed two hardshell jackets, one fleece, one synthetic down liner, and one softshell ski pant in the same load with the recommended amount of Tech Wash. I put the load through an additional rinse cycle. Everything came out great! Very happy with this product.
