Use Nikwax Tech Wash to clean and care for your waterproof/breathable garments. Dirt will attract water and reduce the beading-up of droplets on the fabric's surface. Plus, after a couple days out in the backcountry, your shell reeks. Wash the garment in Nikwax Tech Wash non-detergent soap. Detergents can leave water-attractive residues that will not rinse out. They also contain agents that can wash away water-repellent treatments. Never use liquid detergents or fabric softeners. 10 fl oz. (300 ml)
Bottom Line: Detergents can diminish the durable water repellency (DWR) of a technical fabric. Opt for Tech Wash instead.
do you put a certain amount in the machine to make them waterproof? How much of the solution so you need. How much does the solution cost and how big a bottle?
I washed my Arcteryx Alpha SV with this stuff for the first time a few weeks ago, and this stuff is amazing. Not only did it get some of the stains out, it made my jacket smell brand new. Great product, i will definitely be using it again.

If I use this on my Backcountry.com rime pullover, which is made from Powershield material should I hang dry or use the dryer? Im concerned mostly with breathability not so much for water repellence.
The first order of business when I received my bottle of Nikwax Tech was to test was to read the back label to see if it was written in English instead of tech speak. I was happy to see that it's written in a very easy to understand and follow manner. If you've visited the Nikwax website you'll know it's filled with lots of great detailed, technical explanations and science, but it isn't always easy to understand. The awesome Nikwax team is currently creating easy to understand content, diagrams, drawings, explanations and videos, so be looking for those coming soon to the website.
Nikwax Tech Wash is gentle on everything, yet gets the job done. It's a non-detergent cleanser. It helps your outerwear last longer because it is so gentle. I invest in my gear; I take care of my gear. And I don't want a harsh wash wearing it down faster. I wash nearly all my clothes on "delicate" in "delicate" laundry wash, even if they are every day items. So I was stoked that Nikwax's wash would be gentle to my beloved outerwear.
The Tech Wash, unlike most soaps and detergents, doesn't gunk up or block the pores in the jacket, thus keeping breathable clothes breathable. It also take off grime, dirt, and any other substance on the clothes that would mask the DWR (if your jacket had DWR). Since the wash is detergent free, it helps keep your clothes water reppellent, if they are a shell or jacket.
I've been very pleased using this product. It lines up with my "be gentle to my gear" policy. It has de-mankified my outwear, leaving it clean, shiny and looking like new. It's easy to use and is water based, making it "environmentally friendly."
My love for the Tech Wash went as far this past weekend as washing my designer jeans in it while traveling for business. That's how gentle it is. Tech Wash again shined.
Nikwax also stands behind their product to the consumers benefit. If it jacket is damaged during a wash, call Nikwax and they'll replace the jacket. They believe in their product and want to give consumers the piece of mind when using it.
So the next time your outwear is getting all manky, check out a bottle of Tech Wash. It works great in tandom with the Tx Direct, the waterproofer for hardshells.
Can this be used safely on a down jacket with DWR treated fabric? I would like to protect the DWR but of course do not wish to damage the delicate down feathers. Thanks!
Best bet is to use Nikwax Down Wash to clean the garment and then treat with Nikwax Down Proof. It's designed to restore DWR on down garments without damaging the down.
I was a little nervous about washing my expensive collection of gear, but I gave this a try anyway. Everything came out great! Got some small stains out of my hardshell jacket and softshell pants. I washed two hardshell jackets, one fleece, one synthetic down liner, and one softshell ski pant in the same load with the recommend about of Tech Wash. I put the load through an additional rinse cycle. Everything came out great! Very happy with this product.
I have used both, in the end its all about the washing machine, cycle settings, extra rinse, etc... I haven't found many differences between tech soaps, but have in types of DWR replenisher... Stay away from the spray on style for jackets...
This is the best product to safely clean your technical gear. It has a pleasant smell, removes stains, and it always leaves my gear looking & feeling like new.
Washing waterproof clothes with regular liquid detergent is terrible. The liquid doesn't completely dissolve and blocks the pores of your clothing. As a result, it is not as functional, and the clothing is less waterproof and less breathable. Using powder detergent is better, but you still face many of the same problems. The solution, Nikwax Tech Wash. This stuff is awesome, does a really great job cleaning waterproof clothing, without damaging it. And after you wash it with this stuff use the WashIn to help restore the waterproofing. This is the perfect 1-2 punch.
Hi! Grease stains are tricky, aren't they?!? One of the best ways to treat them is to soak the affected area in warm water and dish soap (like Dawn). THEN follow up with Tech Wash. Dish soaps are the best at cutting grease and the tech wash will remove any residue left behind by the dish soap. Hope this helps! Thanks for the question! Stay dry! :)
This stuff works great on oily or dirty clothing, I don't have specific experience with almond butter, but if the stain is relatively fresh, and your gear hasn't gone through the wash yet, this will remove most of the oil. It may remove the stain altogether, but that is less likely. You'll probably see the best results if you pretreat and scrub the stain before washing, you could use undiluted tech wash for this purpose, or even regular dish detergent.
Hi Eric! Tech Wash is definately what you want to use to clean your fleece jackets. One thing to be aware of though, if this is the first time you've washed a new fleece it may distribute fuzz over your other jackets in the washing machine. But other than that, yes, you can definately throw them all in together. If you decide you want to waterproof that fleece, check out Nikwax Polar Proof. Thanks for your question! Stay dry!
I have a couple of sets of snowboard pants and jackets (15Kmm/10Km2) that has small pads of lining inside. After two seasons it is time for a wash since it has food and dirt stains. I bought the Tech Wash and Tx.Direct wash in thinking that I coudl use it to reproof them. After reading the instruction, it is not recommended for items with liners. If I wash them only with Tech Wash would the waterproofing be compromised? Do I have to reproof them with Spray only or should it be ok with just the wash?
Hi Roberto! Washing your gear with Tech Wash will never compromise the existing DWR (durable water repellency). In fact, if the DWR is still solid (it wears off over time), Tech Wash will help it work better. As for proofing, the Tx.Direct wash-in product would be great for your pants. The only "liners" you would worry about would be those that are designed to wick sweat off the surface of the skin (like a running shirt with a hanging mesh liner). I wash all my snowboard pants and jackets with Tx.Direct wash-in and it works great. Tech Wash and Tx.Direct work best as a team. Give them both a try... I think you'll be pleased. If you have any more detailed questions, don't hesitate to contact us at (800) 563-3057. Thanks for your question!
I would honestly not reccomend anything else to wash your gear in. This is the ONLY product for tech type washes in my eyes. Works better than anything to breathe new life into your smelly gear.
I have an oakley jacket that is not just a shell it has thinsulate inside the jacket. I know this helps with re water proofing but wont this make the jacket not be able to breathe anymore? Or will it many just wash it which is what i really want.
Hi Austin! The answers above are correct. Tech Wash is a cleaner that will improve your jacket's breathability. If, after cleaning, you notice that water isn't beading up on the surface of the jacket anymore, it's time to reapply the DWR (durable water repellancy) to the outside using the Tx.Direct spray-on found here: http://www.backcountry.com/nikwax-tx-direct-spray-on
Austin, This is just a wash it will not waterproof. This will increae your breathabilty big time. But I would look into buying the TX Direct Spray on to waterproof the outside shell.
At first I was a lil skeptical about this. After I used it my mind was changed. This stuff is GREAT! My high end jackets and pants came out looking brand new. Esp the collar and the cuffs. My jacket smells great now and looks brand new! This is a must to keep your gear tip top.
I washed my technical shell, rain jacket, softshell, and my primaloft coat and they all look brand new! This is supper easy to do and it does bring the waterproofness back just a little bit but to really revive your coats wash them in the TX Direct right after the Tech Wash.
Grease stains on Gore-tex Pro shell jacket. How to get them off? I have Arcteryx Alpha LT that has some major grease stains that are not coming off with Granger's G-wash. When I got this jacket the previous owner tried to wash the grease stains with G-wash and they didn't come off. One local store that sells Arcteryx told me to try Shout Advanced Gel which I did on small area but that didn't help either. Is there anything I can do about this?I haven't tried Nikwax but would it even matter because jacket has been washed already without a luck?
I've been in this situation many times before so maybe this may work for you. First saturate the garment in cold water for a few minutes until completely soaked. Using a soft bristle brush, grab some nikwax tech wash and place a bit on the stain. Use the brush in a circular motion to try to penetrate the stain. If it starts to get a bit dry add a few drops of cold water and continue to work the stain. Continue to do so until the stain has completely been lifted. Submerge the area in cold water where the stain was and using the brush again, work until all of the nikwax has come off. Always treat the stains before washing any of your gear to ensure the best results. This has always been my method of choice whether its washing my technical gear to regular cotton tees.
For grease stains I just use dish washing soap. Smear some one the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Wash out as much as you can by hand and then wash how you normally would. You might have to do this a few time depending on how tough the stain is but works like a charm.
Hey Matt,My old shell got some serious grease stains that got washed in a couple of times, maybe 3 or 4. I stressed but then my wife used shout advanced gel. The thing you have to do is apply it very liberally and really grind it in. The apply it 3-5 more times the same way. Then you want to wash it the next morning. It got the grease right out of my jacket. There is some stuff that will get the grease out but it will also damage the integrity of the material. Hopefully that will help.----Thanks Steve for your answer. Just want everyone to know I did what Steve said and it did wonders!! Everything came off. Here's the step-by-step guide.-Poured water on the grease/stain spots for few minutes and rubbed those spots with my fingers under running water so the spot areas got wet.-Applied Shout Advanced Gel. Like Steve said, I ground the stuff on the jacket quite hard and quite a bit. I had doubts how Gore-tex Pro Shell would take the punishment and believe me it came out like new.-Waited for half an hour and applied Shout again and then waited 30 min and repeat (I applied Shout total of 5 times, always waited 30min before repeating the process).-Let jacket be over night (this is the most important part).-Next morning washed it with Granger's G-wash (warm water). I'm sure Nikwax will work here too.-Tumble dried with delicate setting. Now jacket looks like spanking new. Remember that before I did what Steve suggested I washed this jacket twice with Granger's G-wash and once tried Shout without any success. So the key here is to apply Shout multiple times and letting Shout sit on your jacket over night.
Finally got around to washing my family's ski stuff at the end of the season last month and went through 3 bottles of Tech Wash. This stuff is the greatest; removes all signs of chairlift grease, mud, funk, dirt, food, etc. Finish off your wash with Nikwax's wash-in in waterproofing, http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Nikwax-Softshell-Proof-Wash-In/NIK0024M.html, and you're good to go. After spending $$$$ on tech clothing, don't use supermarket laundry detergent to wash it. Pleasing after wash scent too. cheers.
If you're like everyone these days, you're probably trying to get more mileage from your gear. Nikwax Tech Wash turns stinky, nasty, dirty shells and turns them almost new again. Never use powdered detergent on your tech wear, it never fully dissolves and renders the garment un-waterproof. I trust this stuff with all my family's gear. For heavily soiled stains, apply directly and then throw in the wash. Cheers.
This stuff has really helped all my old gear that I was never smart enough to wash appropriately. They are now breathing appropriately and clean! Mixed with the spray on waterproofing, my super old stuff is performing like new!
If you have a shell that doesn't keep you dry anymore, wash it with this stuff and then TX.Direct and let it air dry. I did that to a Marmot Membrain jacket, and it's almost BETTER than new.
I am very impressed with how well these Nikwax products work. I used the TX Direct spray on in conjunction with the Tech Wash here and it literally transformed the material on my jacket. My 2 year old jacket has had it pretty rough. The material felt coarse and had some fuzziness to the fibers from being flogged so hard. After washing it the material felt smooth and supple again. Very impressed with this product.
Did you know that washing your Gore Tex will actually keep it breathing and waterproof? A couple of times a year I run all of my technical outerwear through the wash and it really does keep things looking nice and new.
If you have any technical shell that has lost some of its waterproofing or just starts to smell...y ou need this. Normal detergent ruins technical shell materials, this stuff preserves it. You Need to have this
I love this product and have used it for years. I am pleased they have a UV protection out now too by Nikwax. Follow the directions on the bottle and keep your performance clothing clean. Your clothing will last years longer if you just invest more in tech wash.
I washed my Arcteryx Alpha SV with this stuff for the first time a few weeks ago, and this stuff is amazing. Not only did it get some of the stains out, more...
