Bring your down sleeping back to life with the Nikwax Down Wash. This non-detergent and bio-degradable treatment restores the loft and natural water-repellency of your down jacket, sleeping bag, or comforter. Use the Down Wash with your garment's manufacturer instructions to effectively clean and restore your down's bounce and heat-efficiency.
Bottom Line: Keep your down fresh and clean with Nikwax Down Wash. It'll last longer and keep you warmer.
This stuff did a great job on my Stoic down jacket. Longtime stains were gone, and the color is still as bright yellow as ever. I don't know if it was because of the down wash or the down proof I also used after, but it seemed like the first time i used both it took a long time in the dryer, on low heat, to unclump the down, even with some tennis balls. Just something to keep in mind I guess, otherwise this stuff worked great.
HE machines require HE detergent for normal clothes washing. You should NOT use regular HE detergent with down clothing. It will wash the natural, essential oils off of the down and reduce the insulating power.

I heard that you could use a light detergent to wash your down bags or coats and do not do it. Totally deflated it. So heed my warning, use this instead. Keeps up the loft and the life of the down product. Use a front loading washer/dryer though if possible
Ok... so i now realize I'm pretty dirty. FINALLY washed my Down sleeping bag after a few to many nights (years) it's now twice as lofty as it was before and the water was nasty afterwards... this stuff really did a great job cleaning my filthy sleeping bag.
Each cap full is 50ml. Nikwax calls for 2 caps (100ml) for 1 season bags (between 1 lb 12 oz and 2 lb 8 oz) and 3 caps (150ml) for 2-4 season bags (between 2 lb 8 oz and 5 lb 8 oz).
Hey depending on your washing machine and the number of garmets, etc, I usually "2 scoops" of just the threaded part of the cap, not an entire cap full...
I recently used this on my white north face down jacket. It left yellow spots all over it. I think it would work great in a front load washer but make sure you get all of the soap out before you dry or it will leave spots. I will be taking my jacket to the dry cleaners to see what they can do. I say just spent the extra 20 bucks and have your stuff cleaned.
not really too much to say. if you need to wash something that is down, use this stuff. it's great for sleeping bags and also really nice to give that old comforter a bit more life.
Depends on how soiled your bag is and the size of the bag. I would recommend using a capful on an adult sized bag that is not too dirty. (ie: used on about 3 trips, average of 5 nights per trip in fall)
I was reluctant about washing my down items @ home until I tried Nikwax Down Wash. Most recently I washed my elderly Sierra Designs "Good Goose" down jacket which was in dire need of cleaning. It not only made it look new again by cleaning the shell & revitalizing the loft, but brought back that "Michelin Man" appearance.
Make sure to wash your down items in a front loading washer on the most gentle cycle & totally support the wet items when moving them to the dryer. This will prevent the baffles from tearing since wet down is very heavy.
what can i say? it cleans and doesn't damage. just what you want for an expensive sleeping bag or down jacket. brought back the freshness to my 10 year old sleeping bag which had gotten skankier than i had realized.
When the down jackets and sleeping bags go for the prices they do these days, I'm a little wary of using some homemade concoction on my gear. Likewise, I was a little worried to use this stuff. I was very pleased with the results though. After washing my bag in the Nikwax Down Wash and drying it, I was very happy to see the original loft restored. It looked brand new. I'd definitely recommend this stuff if you want to take care of your down gear.
Lent my elderly down bag to a friend for a backpacking trip and she returned it foul and dirty. She apologized profusely but nonetheless I had to get it clean. I took this Down Wash to a local laundromat, threw my bag in a front loader and it came out spic and span -- couldn't believe it! After reading a few ways to dry a down bag, I put it in my "home" drier on low heat with a clean tennis ball and it came out great. Be sure to read the directions on the bottle of the Nikwax -- you don't have to use much (especially since you are also using a front-loader) so don't overdo it -- I think it would be a pain to get excess cleaner out of your bag. Now I have plenty more for the next dirty trip out!
The Nikwax Down Wash works great on down gear as well as down blankets & comforters. I get about 3-4 washes out of the bottle for a comforter (& I did throw in a down sweater with one of those loads)-just be sure to do a double rinse cycle to make sure all of the soap gets out. I have 2 laundered tennis balls that I use in the dryer to re-fluff the down. Just remember the higher quality of down you start out with (800 fill vs. 650 fill) the longer it will last & the easier it is to re-fluff.
This stuff totally keeps my down looking nice. However, my light colored coat gets really dirty and requires much scrubbing before hand or it doesn't come all the way clean. You can scrub your really dirty stuff first with this cleaner, and then wash it. Once I did that, my coat was beautiful again. I've never been able to keep my down looking nice, so I quit buying it. Now, I can continue to buy down gear and keep it looking super good!
I should have gotten this stuff YEARS ago for my bag, oh well better late than never! works great, definitely improved the loft of the down as well. more...
