The New Balance N2 Heart Rate Monitor is a no-frills, performance-oriented training tool. A wireless chest belt transmits ECG-accurate, real time heart rate information to your wrist, using your stored gender, height, weight, and age profile to provide calories burned and target heart rate. Staying within that optimal range improves the effectiveness of your workouts dramatically, meaning you'll achieve fitness goals far sooner than the old pulse-and-stopwatch method (hey, we're guilty too). Time, date, and alarm functions mean you can bring the N2 on trips without having to swap out for a real watch.
Bottom Line: Make your workouts work harder for you.
thank you to those who let me know about how to activate the calorie counter. whoever wrote the user manual really dropped the ball on that one. It is not mentioned anywhere! Oh, and please do not listen to the individual who said that 1,000 calories burned equals one KCAL and that is the reason why the value reads 0. That is very incorrect information.
Anybody know if this will work in conjunction with a Nike+ system? I have a Suunto that seems to conflict with the Nike+ wristband / foot accelerometer.
It doesn't. It is very basic, but because of such, it doesn't take a Ph.D in engineering to use it. Like a Suunto does. Since I bought this watch, Nike+ added a heart strap that integrates my system nicely. But this New Balance is a good entry level heart monitor.

This heart rate monitor will get you started, but if you are looking to use it as a training tool you will probably find it lacking. It does not have an average heart rate feature or multiple zones. The buttons are very sensitive, although you can lock them. The wrist band is very small also.
If you want to be able to check your heart rate while exercising, this will work, but if you want serious training data, look elsewhere.
I cannot get the calorie counter to work. I have followed the instructions and input the required stats ( lower and upper limits, age and weight) The calorie counter always says "0" despite an hour of spin class. I took it back to the new balance store where I purchasd it and was told that they do not know how to operate it. I am very frustrated to say the least!
I had the same problem at first. Make sure the upper and lower heart rates are set, and clear the chrono every time you use it. It will reset the calorie counter to zero, and start the chrono again when you start working out and the calories will kick in. If you press the heart rate button once, you will see the calories burned when working out. It only stays on for 1-2 seconds then goes back to your heart rate.
I think that i have an answer for you. If you notice on the bottom of your watch screen it says (heart sign/KCAL). This means that it is counting your calorie burn in KCALS. Meaning 1,000 calories = 1KCAL. Once it shows up as 1 then you have burned 1,000 calories. The downside to this is that you don't really know how many calories you burn unless you get to 1 or 2 KCALS. Hope this helps.
When I opened up the box I thought this was a women's specific watch. The circumference of my wrist is about 8.5 inches and this watch is waaayyyy too small to fit comfortably.
Radius is the distance from the center to the edge, I think you mean circumference, at an 8.5" radium it is no wonder the watch band is too small, you'd be the HULK with a 53.4" wrist
This watch does the job. However the buttons are super sensitive. Its constantly buzzing from me hitting them, even if I am just moving the watch around on my desk for say. I only wear it to run, because its too annoying.
Hi...the instructions to set up this watch monitor were great, but for the life of me (call me stupid) I can't figure out what buttons to push when I want to record a workout. I could see my heart rate ok, but at the end of the session, I didn't see any calorie count. Do I need to start the chronograph too? Do the calories show when I stop the chronograph? Thanks to anyone who may know how these things work!!
Without owning the watch, I am not 100% sure, but as noted by someone else, I believe you have to have the stopwatch running for it to start to count calories.
You are not stupid. I have a masters degree and still found the directions less than useful. If I cant figure this out in another hour I am returning it to the store.
I only gave this watch 3 stars because the watch works well. But the band is WAY TOO SMALL if you are an adult male. I have 7.5" wrists and the watch looks small on me.
