Beat the powder hour.

Sure, you could go stand in line two hours before the lifts fire up, hoping to get a few good turns before the whole mountain is tracked out, or you could get an entire day of untracked creamy goodness by becoming your own lift. Never Summer packed its SL Splitty with tons of high-tech guys-in-white-lab-coats-type-stuff to make it lightweight, ultra-durable, and holy-cow-I-just-peed-myself-fast.

  • Never Summer's patented Rocker and Camber (R.C.) profile puts rocker under and between your bindings for float and forgiveness with camber toward the tip and tail for powerful turns and control on hardpack
  • Carbonium topsheet is scratch- and chip-resistant and provides traction like a stomp pad for better control while riding one-footed
  • Carbonium laminate technology uses carbon fiber in the construction of the board for light weight, durability, and tons of pop
  • Bi-Lite fiberglass provides added strength with a super-light glass fiber matrix
  • NS superlight wood core blends extremely light wood with durable hardwood for light weight, durability, and pop
  • Ultra-durable Sintered P-Tex Sidewalls maintain strength at any temperature to eliminate cracking
  • Durasurf XT Sintered graphite-infused base for ridiculous speed

Well, maybe hate is too strong of a word.

In short, down = amazing, up = sketchy.

The SL Split is an awesome backcountry do it all ride, especially if you like to ride the backcountry like your own natural terrain park; drops, natural hits, pillows, featured terrain, this board kills it all. Incredibly responsive and nimble. I've owned and/or tested many splitboards (including Burton, Jones, Venture & Prior) over the years, and so far the SL has been my favorite shape for the riding part of backcountry snowboarding.

The downside is that the rocker/camber profile of this board puts the rocker right under the touring brackets. The NS rocker/camber has an aggressive "v rocker" like style; if you lay the board on a flat surface only the center of the board touches and both ends rise. Because of this RC profile, you don't get full surface contact on firmer snow, hard pack or ice. Its not a problem in powder or softer conditions, but once it gets hard and steep up you'll want to be throwing your crampons on sooner than later.

Spot on with the review, but keep in mind, I have yet to find a rocker/camber hybrid board that climbs worth a s**t. Lib Tech, Gnu, all the same, once the skin track gets hard and icy you are at a loss for traction. But keep in mind, nothing rides like a NS board and this is one of their best. I have been riding this split for 2 years now and while I have learned the importance of crampons, I wouldn't trade this board for any out there, not even on the sketchiest of skin tracks.
