Rudder-enhanced handling.

Deploy the rudder on the Necky Looksha 14 Kayak and paddle easily through narrow, twisting marshes. The rudder helps with quick turning and straight tracking as you embark on a windy day paddle along the coast. Multiple pivot points in the back of the XtraComfort seat adjust for lumbar support, moisture-resistant cushioning pads your butt, and thigh braces keep the gunnel from digging into your thighs when you shift leg position. The Looksha’s high bow volume helps deflect water when conditions get choppy, so you’re less likely to end up with a lap full of water.

Necky Looksha 14 with Rudder

The Necky Looksha is a great kayak for stability, speed, and steering control. I have paddled it on lakes as well as easy rivers (class 1 and 2), and the rudder makes tracking easy with or without a current. The cockpit is roomy but not too big, and the included seat is very comfortable. A really nice feature is the drink holder between the legs.

There are two hatches which hold a surprising amount of cargo, especially if combined with a taper style dry bag. The neoprene hatch covers are difficult to put on until you get used to it. I found that pulling outwards while stretching the cover helps prevent it from slipping off the hatch rim. There is also room for a 10-15L dry bag in the cockpit behind the seat.

The kayak arrives protected in cardboard, plastic wrap, and foam at the ends. The rudder is not installed on arrival, which is good to prevent damage. It is very easy to install, just requiring an adjustable wrench and a screwdriver.

Thanks for your comments about the Necky. I was looking primarily at Old Town Camden or Cayuga models when I saw this. My question: does it need the rudder or do you think you could go without? I'd be using it much like you; class 1-2 rivers or open water--primarily Apostle Islands trips on Lake Superior. If you see this, please let me know. Since I've suddenly started to question my decision on the Old Town models, I'm probably going to wait until next season to purchase. Thanks.

It's 14' 1.5" long and 24.5" wide. The cockpit is 35.5" by 16.5". The front hatch is 12.75" by 7.5", and the stern hatch is 15.5" by 9". All that information is right in front of you on the page.

I´m 6.10 Ft and 218 Lb, will the Necky looksha 14 work for an ocean touring day?

Daniel, it will work fine if the conditions are normal. At your height you will probably want to try one in person to make sure you have enough leg room.

Necky Looksha 14 w/Rudder

First of all, I must mention how great the staff at Backcountry handled the transaction when I purchased the Necky Looksha 14 with rudder. Upon receiving the kayak I noticed a problem with the kayak, when I contacted Backcountry and they quickly provided “options” to rectify the problem. The staff were very friendly & professional, they went as far as offering to replace the kayak; no questions asked…that’s outstanding customer service!

On to the kayak…over the 4th of July I spend a couple of days getting acquainted with the kayak, it tracks like an arrow with the rudder! The foot pedals take some getting use to specially when not adjusted properly. I found myself stopping to make adjustments, but then it dawned on me that the problem was not with the pedals, but with the outdoor sandal I was wearing. I resolved that problem the next day by wearing water type footwear, Nike’s Aqua Sock.

Overall the Necky Looksha 14 with rudder performed better then expected. I’ve been on smaller kayaks without rudder’s which were very unstable and tracked like a snake.

Highly recommend this kayak and Backcountry.
