Stable, yet nimble, touring kayak that can handle rough water.

When the wind picks up or you're on a long reach between islands, you'll appreciate the retractable skeg and full-chined hull of the Necky Chatham 16 Kayak. You can drop the skeg just a few inches for light trim, or all the way in rough seas to balance out the boat and improve tracking. This improved efficiency can make all the difference between arriving at your destination before dark with energy left to set up camp ... or not.

  • Highly durable Superlinear Polyethlene hull withstands impact and abuse as well as damage from UV rays for years of enjoyment
  • Full hard chine design of hull balances quick response with stability
  • Touring seat is soft, repels water, and features an adjustable backband for comfort and support
  • Support Track adjustable foot brace system features contoured rubber and extra padding for secure grip, extra control, and barefoot comfort
  • Thigh braces adjustable to fit the preferences of a range of paddlers
  • Retractable skeg enhances tracking in rough conditions, and features corrosion-resistant, kink-resistant, highly durable Necky Wire
  • Skeg is controlled by easy-access slider at the side of the cockpit (away from the thigh brace) and is infinitely adjustable with a resilient rod (not cable)
  • Expedition-ready bow, day, and stern Valley hatches with bulkheads are virtually waterproof, tough, and easy to access
  • Deck bungee system delivers storage needed for longer trips
  • Bow and stern carrying handles make it easy to unload this boat from a vehicle and load it into the water

Up the beach

Up the beach

The grab handles are pretty sweet, and the boats aren't too heavy- a bit unwieldy for one person, but two can handle them with no problem

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Got the Chatham for its quickness and performance. I paddled one as a guide in Prince William Sound out of Valdez, and now own two and paddle them all around Dutch Harbor/Unalaska. Sweet boat. Not the most stable, so you've got to be good with your balance and braces, probably a little above a beginner's boat. The 16 has a bit more foot room for size 12 kickers than does the 17. Super quick to pick up speed, tracks well with out the skeg down, and tracks great with the skeg down. Super responsive in turns, a little lift with a knee and bit of a lean makes the turns super quick and tight. Great boat for short tours or playing in the surf and rougher water!
