Ultimate 12 Kayak

The Native Watercraft Ultimate 12 Kayak has a unique hull design—when you look at the Ultimate head-on, it appears to be a combination pontoon and kayak. In the middle section of the kayak, the hull dips down on either side (like two pontoon runners) which stabilizes the boat so you can actually stand and cast or just shift your weight around without going for a swim. The adjustable seat keeps your back and butt comfortable during hours of paddling and removes quickly for easy boat-loading. Stash your photo equipment or fishing accessories in the front and back of this kayak, adjust the foot braces, and push off from the dock.

Bottom Line: The ultimate in stability.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

I used to have a "Kewie" with a sliding bumper seat

I used to have a "Kewie" with a sliding bumper seat for a child. Have been unable to locate a similar seating arrangment.I am interested in this model because it is an open design and described to be very stable. I have a young grandchild (or two) that would be tagging along (with life vests of course), and am wondering if anyone has taken small children aboard their Native Watercraft Ultimate 12. I would think that a couple of floating marine pillows could be positioned in the bow or the stern for seating. The weight limits would be adhered to, as we are small in stature. Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thankyou

If you're a big guy this is the one to get

By:

I'm 6'5" 265 lbs and other Kayaks just aren't comfortable. I demo'd a few before I purchased, and the store that I bought from only had the (I guess its the angler model of the native 12) in blue. I didn't care to get the (angler model) at the time of purchase, I figured just more features for me to break/have to maintain, but I did want a blue native 12, and the (angler model) was all they had in that color, so I said screw it and made the purchse.

I'm glad I did,,, the keel that pops down in the back surprised me by making a big difference in keeping the kayak straight. This is especially handy when I take off my shirt, and recline the chair back to doze off as I float along the river. The other reviews are spot on when it comes to stability and exceptional comfort of this craft.

I'm considering either the Wilderness systems comander 120

I'm considering either the Wilderness systems comander 120 or the native watercraft ultimate 12. Any comparisions on the tracking and stability of the two boats? I'm not looking for a fishing boat but a boat that I can take my dog, Ruby with me.

Good video. I'm looking for the most stable kayak available as I'm brand new to the sport. This video helped- especially highlighting the hull design.

You Gotta Love It

By:

This is a great kayak. I have done exhaustive research, gone on numerous kayak demo days and tried out about as many different kayaks that you can possibly try. I love to fish so a great fishing kayak was my goal. Initially I thought I would want a sit on top....that's what many, maybe most anglers down here in Florida use...well once I got into the Native Ultimate I knew this was the kayak for me. Tons of space for gear and storage, well made, great in the water, easy to rig as you see fit to meet your fishing and kayaking needs. I could not be happier with my Native Ultimate 12 purchase. PLUS as an added bonus Backcountry.com was awesome in processing my order, making sure I understood what I had to do to receive my shipment of the kayak. backcountry.com packed the kayak very well and made the whole process easy and stress free. Great job to backcounty and if you are in the market for a great fishing kayak you can't go wrong with the Native Ultimate.

I notice most people who use this craft are fisherman. I am not. I want to use it on rivers in Minnesota, and possibly the boundary waters. the reason it appeals to me is because I feel like i could get a lot of camping gear in here with a 12 footer rather than buying a touring kayak that would be longer. Second, being new to the activity, it seems to me that if I am going to stick with it, i need to be comfortable and this seat appears to be renowned for its comfort. What do you think? Would a kayak newbie like this boat for casual river use and the occaisional weekend/weeklong camp/kayak excursion?

Tim, you can use this kayak for about anything but it will not handle as well as a touring kayak and it is a little heavier. If you plan on casual use this should work fine for you and is very stable and has a higer load capacity.

Saltwater Fly Fishing

By:
May 28, 2009

A fantastic craft for saltwater fly fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. So steady you can stand up and cast your fly rod. Plenty of room for all your gear and room to spare to spread out and get comfortable. Five fly fisher ladies all have one and regulary take fishing outings.

If you go into class 2 through 4 water is there a skirt cover?

If you go into class 2 through 4 water is there a skirt cover? or built in drain? Is it good for weekend camping also? I have had two back operations is there enough support and comfort? I paddle a OC1 now will this work better over all? Thanks Richard

Class two for sure and spray covers help a lot in the bow and stern, keeping spray and splash out of the boat. Unless these are very small class 3 and 4's, the boat is mainly for flat and moving water, but not a whitewater boat, although in advanced paddlers hands, yeah sure, but tie in some flotation. The First Class seat is just that, best of best, most comfortable seat available in the entire kayaking industry.

Ultimate 12

By:
May 1, 2009

Perfect kayak fishing craft. Holds loads of gear, remarkably stable and comfortable. Have used to float hole to hole for steelhead on Michigan streams. Making hairpin turns and dodging deadfall is a breeze on Pere Marquette and Little Manistee Rivers. Easy to get in and out even in full wading gear and clothing layered for 35 degrees! Don't bother with the "angler" model. Learn what you need and rig it up yourself. A joy on small lakes and ponds -- buy the accessory paddle clips to store paddle while fishing. They got this boat right!!

Yes, Spray skirts are available for all the Ultimates. You can cover the bow, stern, cockpit, and seat/cockpit area of all the Ultimates. Each is sold individually so you can cover some or all of the boat to keep the spray out and gear dry.

Ultimate 12 Fishing Kayak Review

By:
February 9, 2010

Native Watercraft's Ultimate 12 kayak is designed for fisherman. The sharp bow and stern cut the water efficiently for good tracking. The tunnel hull offers unparalleled support for stand up and cast stability. The tunneled hull is designed to have a high weight capacity so it can be paddled into the shallows and tight spots that a big boat can’t get to (where the best fishing is). The boat paddles and handles better than most performance recreational kayaks, a balance of tracking, stability and maneuverability. The Open Deck layout means you can carry a ton of gear and have easy access to it while on the water. The Seat slides to access the gear holds while you are out on the water. Have you ever tried to open a hatch on a sit on top while on open water? The Seat also snaps out of the boat for a beach chair and camp chair..so no more sitting on hard rocks, dirty mud, or wet grass. Take the seat out, and you have a lighter boat, about 7 lbs less to load. Native Watercraft has a ton of kayak fishing accessories on their website to outfit this boat however you wanthttp://www.nativewatercraft.com/overview_acc_all.cfmhttp://www.nativewatercraft.com/overview_acc_all.cfm).The Ultimate 12 is a top choice for bigger people looking for a comfortable boat that is easy to get in and out of. The Ultimate 12 has got to be the most stable boat I have ever paddled. I can just step off the dock right into it. Solid performance and value for fisherman and lake paddlers.
